In my last fortress, I had two dwarves get trapped in a mine (i messed up the stairs and they couldn't get up)
In their shared traumatic experience, they fell in love.

As for the 'avoid aquifers' rule, in the newest version you don't have be be quite so strict on it. Aquifers have been split into 2 groups: Aquifers and Heavy Aquifers. Non-heavy aquifers now fill much slower (though still pretty quick) so you can block wall off the area before it refills. Heavy Aquifers are the nightmarish OG style aquifers.

@Nookrium Some key points you missed in this pt1 unmodded tutorial are:
    a) Beds can /only/ be made from wood (unmodded). If you embark to a biome that has little/no wood your dwarves will shortly (hah!) be v unnhappy until you get some :(
    b) Early alcohol production is essential ASAP. Dwarves will only drink (fresh) water if no alternative exists (unless bedridden thru injury/sickness) & will be made unhappy by the necessity. Set up a productive still/brewery ASAP, even before food!
    c) When selecting individuals for jobs in the menu, the most appropriate dwarfs for that task are auto-presented in the list in descending order by game calculations, so picking the top selection is usually pretty good - unless they've too much else to do.. ofc certain addons make this much easier ;)
    d) Stockpiles can be adjusted to take anything; the nomenclature (ie initial stockpile focus) system simply preselects a bunch of stuff for you rather than locking that 'pile into a specific type of good.. much like Rimworld 'dump' 'piles & more general 'piles
    e) Getting animals brought with you (esp your haulers) into a specific area to allow them to graze is v useful at gamestart. You may slaughter them later for food, but until you release them from the wagon they'll be confined & will quickly starve
    f) Don't forget to deconstruct the wagon for 3 wood! Not relevant in your biome but often overlooked by others in a harsher start. It should also remove the wagon's 'meeting spot' area (something I expect you'll address next vid), so new arrivals won't stay stuck on map edges ;)

I just started playing and I've figured out a lot of basics with some help from my brother and just kinda using intuition but watching stuff like this fills in so many gaps (and shows easier ways to do things)! I'm not usually a purist and am a heavily visual-oriented person but I went in and now play with nothing changed but a palette that's a little easier on the eyes. The original ascii is charming now, even if somewhat confusing still.

And also how IN THE WORLD did you change the sizes of those three displays? And also after embarking, how did you get that really nice GUI where it's 1080p and most of the screen is the Main View map?

    Sharing my thoughts a bit and helping the algorithm;
I can't wait for the Dwarf Fortress of VR or maybe a 3d modern Dwarf Fortress type of game. Don't you find games that have a lot of random variance and depth to be lacking in contemporary games? I hope the game engines can innovate more with AI systems, making game creation to be near easy. But today a lot of the best games are meticulously created and have a lot of work put into it. Like say for Cyberpunk 2077. The game isn't out yet but by the way they market it it seems to have a lot of people working on it, making sure the game's quality doesn't falter. On the opposite side of the spectrum games like No Man's Sky is pretty lacking in the exploration aspect, but has made strides to change that aspect to be more fun. It's wide berth is immense, but it's depth is like an inflatable pool. However It will never beat having a world custom created with a culture, a history, the politics and the dynamics of a living breathing planet. Now admittedly I feel that that sort of technology is a bit far off. It would take having an AI baked into the game engine or something, that calculates every movement the player makes, action they take, the mistakes they make etc. This much detail can be interpreted weirdly by the ai but I think it's a start. To have an AI custom make a world while you play it, with custom events Is a Direct AI Director. Now imagine the amount of work needed to create something like that. But having a system like Dwarf fortress that just makes events, and the animations only are as accurate as it's graphics capability. Now to have a system like that; a Modern Dwarf Fortress in a 3d world. Now that would be incredible!

Definitely looking to get back into DF2020! In particular, the new guilds and temples look interesting. Dwarves can train each other in skills? So a legendary+5 armorsmith can train up other dabbling armorsmiths? And temple priests can reduce the stress of dwarves? Very much looking to explore those! But I do need my DFHack and autobutcher utilities first.

This is the ideal way to experience Dwarf Fortress. To those "other" players, I've got to ask: if you could, would you slap FFXIV graphics (or pick your favorite MMO) onto a WOW client? That's the magic of DF-it stands out in its uniqueness. Using modded graphics just seems like taking shortcuts... might as well play Gnomoria if that's the case.

Great idea, Nook! This isn't an easy game to figure out at first, although it's not as bad as people think. I mean, *Losing Is Fun,* right? :)
Seriously, if you just know the basics, you can dive right in. And when things go horribly wrong,... well, _that's_ Dwarf Fortress. _Of course_ things are going to go horribly wrong! That's what's fun.
PS. Admittedly, I need my graphics packs. I can't play ASCII. I'm fine with minimal graphics, but I need _something._ :)

I'm about to embark on getting into this game, while using the Meph toolset. I'm going into this with the mindset that, at some point, I'm going to war against all the different kingdoms, and seeking to conqure their lands and holdings; and establish a dwarven empire.

What people that are interested need to get over with - which is the biggest hurdle the game has - is the intimidating reputation. Everybody goes on and on how difficult and menacing the game is and all that. No, it isn't. It's basically Dungeon Keeper mixed with Stronghold for those that wish to compare. Besides, the game allows for some very fine world tuning and you only make it as difficult as you want it to be.
Honestly, once you get past the "reading the cliffnotes" stage and take things slowly, familiarize controls (which I'll grant you, can be frustrating to deal with), the game is _not_ that difficult. There's a lot of things to keep track of, especially when starting (food, shelter, booze, mining and its hazards), and if you don't, you'll end up getting in a nasty position. Still, that is what most strategy games are about.
HOWEVER - more often than not, you can get yourself un-nastied if you do not panic and think first. The game is technically turn based after all. With all the documentation the game has - A great wiki which has tutorials, video tutorials, even a tutorial in bookform - it is really easy to get into. Just don't expect your first 2-3 forts to live long. But really, with no real end goal, the whole point is losing.

Dwarf fortress is not an hard game. The problem is that people think is hard for 2 reasons. 1 is that the interface is actually hard to understand if you are used to games with a simple interface. 2 is that you can touch the maximum difficulty if you have imagination. But indeed if you play safe and you dont try to find trouble, you can pretty much play for 10 months (in real life) without the need to learn nothing. Of course if you want to progress and change the situation in your fortress you have to dig into the caverns.

My yellow cursor disappeared immediately (only available in the mini map), even though it's on "Yes" in settings. I also can't display this very helpful tab with all key bindings, like hotkeys tooltip. Starting for a first time is very very hard.
It seems like you were playing a different version of the game. 4 years later Tab is not working for me, as well as a lot of other hotkeys. UI is much worse, very difficult to figure it out.

Like all tutorials of this game, you say that my first fortress will get quickly destroyed. I tried to play this and got completely bored when I had built all the essentials things and the only thing that kept happening was a few new immigrants coming now and then and I just kept building new beds and gathering plants. I dug down into a cavern but there was really just some gems and I didn't know what to do with them. Eventually some monster came and I managed to have it killed and lost a couple dwarfs and that was it. I ended up intentionally digging into the nearby river and drowning my fortress out of boredom just to see what would happen. I really don't understand this game. What am I supposed to do in it??

Embark at a more difficult site with less stuff and challenge yourself to build something special. Just because you didn't lose doesn't mean you won.
