    I always (usually) add a name to a lever at the same time I link it in same menu, easy insurance against forgetting what is connected to what later

      yeah I usually end up with a wall or alcove of levers to control a bunch of stuff, labels are super necessary

    I had fun with bridges once. I build my Trade Depot Deep in the ground, making sure there was enough room for people to get in. Then when I had a caravan come they would go to the depot and set up, for which they had to cross a bridge. I then had someone pull the lever and close the bridge. Then next to that lever there was another that opened up a flood gate that would pull water from the nearby river and pump it into the depot drowning everyone. Then I had one last lever that would be pulled to drain the water out into a pump stack that pumped the water back into the river. Open the bridge and raid all the goods... Sadly I didn't have a place for bodies to go to so that fortress got overrun by Miasma from all the corpses LMAO. It was so much fun.

      Are....Are you ok? This is incredibly evil...so please tell me how it was done :D

    • @BreezyDefrag

      @@CryptoKrill LMAO I learned about pump stacks! And I was dabbling with what could be done with them kikiki.
      They are awesome (I have a text wall of how it was build below if you wanna try it out for yourself. Just be mindful I did this a while back so things may be a bit different over the course of updates) Also, I was kind of tired of losing at dwarf fortress sooo quickly... I am not a good preper apparently lmao. So I did the next best thing and became a plundering band of dwarves... like I said the miasma did me in causing the the fortress to fall lol.
      Description of the build:
      You build about 10 or so layers (to make sure you have enough real estate to build this amazing death trap) down into the ground about 3 or 4 grid squares away from a large moving river and then build a trade depot in a perfectly sized room for the depot Plus 1 on all sides of the depot This is needed for later elements. then you need to make sure that the caravans can make their way down without issue with ramps. Then go up 1 layer and carve a path to just above the depot. Make it the same size, or slightly smaller if you can of the depot's footprint. then create 4 grates that water can pass through. then on an offshoot from this little chamber build a hall that leads to a very column of steps (I think I had to do this from the top to guarantee the dwarf didn't get stuck... mind you some dwarves were lost in the making of this death trap lol) and then build a single pump that pulls water from the river into the column that fills the chamber above the depot, water passes through the grates flooding the depot (don't forget to rig it to a lever down near the depot for quick on/off) and that was the first part. the next part was the most finicky bit for me... carve another chamber that was about as large as the depot's footprint on a lower layer below the depot and then set up 4 more grates in depot space that go down into this chamber. and create another column up to the surface using a very tall Pump stack... really finicky indeed to set up right. set a water pump to pull water from the lower chamber back to the river. Then make sure you have a way to release miasma from the depot or have a LARGE graveyard/refuse area to clear things that die out quickly. you will need 3 lever set up to run this contraption quickly. One lever that closes a drawbridge that lifts up and forms a wall, one lever that turns the water pump on that pulls the water from the river into the water chamber above the depot (which floods down into the depot and the chamber below the depot). Leave the water in the depot until no one is moving anymore and you see the death reports, then finally a lever that turns on the pump stack to draw the out of the chamber below the depot (don't forget to turn the water pump pulling water from the river, off) pulling all the water from the depot as well and the upper chamber. And then finally you can open the walled draw bridge and claim your booty. ^///^ I was actually surprised that this actually worked, and if I remember correctly it didn't count against you for alliances because your dwarves/ etc weren't TECHNICALLY killing them, they were just classified as drowned... now I did this a long time ago so it may not work exactly the same in the most recent versions but definitely give it a go if you wanna be a plunder dwarf colony. You can make SOOOO much bank because you could retrade those goods to other caravans. Also make sure you have a LARGE enough stockpile to pull all the goods out quickly. And again make sure you have a large graveyard/refuse section to clear the dead.... Wow that was long. Apologies for that but do let me know if it works if you try to do it again.

      @@BreezyDefrag Oh wow, this is very detailed, thank you so much for taking the time to write it all out, I appreciate this. I'm running through the rest of Nook's tutorial and I may try this out for my next one when something eventually comes along and kills all my dwarfs.

    You want the fishery outside because, like the butcher's shop (?and tannery), it generates miasma. Also dwarves allowed to fish will do that in preference to almost anything else, so turn that off for most of your colonists
    Traders allow 3 tries to adjust trading to give them enough profit (idk if the higher trader skill for your negotiator makes a difference). In general they want to make ~1/3 of the goods' value as profit, so it looks like you were just below that threshold :(

    • @Vegan_Kebab_In_My_Hand
      @Vegan_Kebab_In_My_Hand 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You can make a vent to let miasma out and do a double door entrance so it doesn't spread just in case. I prefer having everything inside for safety.

    • @snafu2350
      @snafu2350 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@Vegan_Kebab_In_My_Hand Valid points, but I prefer to avoid using vents (even if grated) if at all possible due to the possibility of building destroyers using them for access to my (otherwise fully protected) central locations. If you've a bunch of artefact grates lying around tho, feel free to use them as they can't be destroyed.. :)
      Miasma is a constant problem, whereas forgotten beast etc attacks occur relatively infrequently

    • @Vegan_Kebab_In_My_Hand
      @Vegan_Kebab_In_My_Hand 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@snafu2350 well you're not wrong, I'm just still traumatized because on one of my first playthroughs I had a werezebra menacing outside and that got stuck in my brain. And I also tend to not play a fort for long enough for those building destroyer baddies to come. But if I want to play a fort for as long as possible then yeah, I should do as you say.

    For tutorial purposes its good to show the traders get angry. But in real life, 100% markup is a rule of thumb for resale. You were offering that trader a 20%-25% markup: no wonder he got mad.

    So why are roundabouts so important?

    • @Gmandancer
      @Gmandancer 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      fps control, dwarf fortress's path finding is not optimized and it can get bogged down when you get X amount of dwarves, the roundabout help with the path finding.
