Road Dawg, the very first Corvette I ever drove was a 2003 50th anniversary. A friend of mine let me borrow it 2 years in a row for Prom. It’s where my love of vettes came from!!
I just put a L98 Corvette engine in my 87 iroc z with a LT1 cam, Z28 springs and 1.6 self aligning roller tip rocker arms. I changed the Y pipe to a 3 inch outlet and 3 inch mid pipe to the muffler. I also did the air foil with 24 pound injectors as well the stage 2 jet performance chip performance chip. My car is putting down 258 horsepower to the rear wheels at 4300 rpm and 324 foot pounds of torque at 4000 rpm I love my Camaro more then ever. Runs like a bandit.
Yeah, I know what you mean. I recorded videos for my own fun wayyyy before TH-cam. I then figured why not upload it now that I have a channel. Thank for watching and commenting.
I have a black 91 c4, waiting to get it back . Had a d1 procharger added to it and the engine built up . The mechanic said it should be around 500hp so I'll see when I get it back
I would bet money you gained less than 15 HP from the mods going by experience. You need a ram intake along the lines ot the LT1 style to make good numbers. The tuned port is a torque monster not a high HP intake. I always love the look of the tuned Port though. It just looks so cool.
@@Doulop , That's the way I feel too. Living in Pennsylvania, we don't really have the right road topography for massive horse. But the torque is a monster, when you need to pass on those country roads. Be careful though, I had my '90 L98 break traction with new tires on dry pavement and it's an automatic! I'm an original owner of a '91 coupe with 6 spd and adjustable suspension. have driven it all over and taken it to the limits on the curvy's in the Ozark mountains in MO and AR. Fastest I've ever been was 140mph. It is still bone stock with the original exhaust and even the windshield wiper blades, lol. Would like to have a bit more sound. Are those Borla exhausts you have on this one?
Your engine was probably producing the full rated HP... figure a 20% loss, so that would bring you down from 245 HP ('91 auto) to 201. The limiting factor here is the intake. Your torque takes a nosedive after 3300 RPM. Given that HP = torque X RPM, you can see that as torque drops, HP will drop. If you want more real power, at a minimum you need to get the plenum, runners, and baseplate ported, then maybe run the GM Hot Cam or similar aftermarket cam. The TPI intake was originally designed for a 305 ci engine, and it's undersized for the 350. It will give good performance under 4K RPM but falls on its face after that. The LT1 found in '92 and later engines has 30 more HP, solely due to the Miniram manifold... the same manifold on the L98 will give you the same HP. I have a '91 roadster with the 6-speed. If you want to spend $3K, then a new cam, a new manifold, and new heads, and you'll get 350 HP or thereabouts at the crank, 300 at the wheels. Or, spend another $4K and get a 383 and you'll get well over 400 HP and a car that will do 0-60 in under 4 seconds.
Hi John, nice comment. Thank you! I agree with the torque dropping after 3300 RPM. Very bad drop, lol. How do you do the ported things and plenum runners? Are they parts you buy or what? Thanks again. Merry Christmas!
@@Doulop You can go to a company like Extrude Hone and they will port your intake (plenum, runners, baseplate). Or, you can replace the TPI with another intake, e.g., the Miniram (that loses the TPI look). Or you can go with an aftermarket system like a FIRST TPI that is like the factory TPI in design but on steroids, and flows 30% more air without porting (and can be ported to flow much more, e.g., via Extrude Hone). I think that on a stock or rebuilt 350 L98, either the Extrude Hone option or the FIRST TPI with the GM Hot Cam would bring you up to near 300 HP at the rear wheels (RWHP), and that would let you run 0-60 in the mid-4 second range. If you can do the work yourself, the FIRST TPI and the cam would run you under $2K. Your engine had 100K miles when the video was made. I'm sure it has more now. If I was doing this, I'd get a 383 stroker short block, get AFR 195 heads on it, call Crane Cams for a recommended hydraulic roller cam for 2500 to 6000 RPM and 1.6:1 ratio roller rocker arms, and get a FIRST TPI manifold. That package would produce well in excess of 400 crank horsepower, and likely well over 350 HP at the wheels. Imagine your car with twice the RWHP, yet it would be tractable and driveable, with good fuel economy if you kept your foot out of it... and VERY fast, about as fast as you could safely use on the street. My '91 L98 has 52K miles on it, and the Hot Cam and a full Borla exhaust. It runs 0-60 just over 5 seconds. My cheap performance fix would be the FIRST TPI intake and AFR heads.
I have to disagree with you on some things, I don't believe an LT1 intake will bolt on a L98 and its not just put it on and get the HP and torque of the LT1 if it was Chevy would have just changed the manifold instead of engineering a new motor. The LT1 was quite a bit different, one difference is the L98 had a distributor in back of the intake and I believe coil packs back there where the LT1 had a distributor above the crank shaft and say what you will about optispark but it was far superior controlling spark then anything before it, so I don't believe the LT1 manifold will allow for the rear distributor. The LT1 also had reverse coolant flow which enabled higher compression ratio and I would have to go out in the cold garage and look but I don't think the coolant runs through the intake but I think it did on the L98. But the real thing is why do you want to beat those 30 year old cars up remember its more than an engine, when they were made Chevy had no intention of making that car to be still on the road in 30 years or over 150,000 miles, it was a little more than 10 years earlier that the odometers only went to 99K. I have a 92 LT1 vette in black rose metallic that 10 years ago was getting close to being a parts car and I have been resurrecting it ever since, you destroy yours and it makes mine just a little more rare and it keeps the swap meets running.
@@jaymortensen642 On the subject of intakes: The LT1 intake can be modified to work on an L98. A few people have machined them to fit small cap HEI distributors. Obviously a TPIS mini ram or FIRST intake would be an easier swap though. The L98 113 heads and aluminum LT1 heads flow basically the same in stock form(190-ish cfm). Combining the TPIS intake and an LT4 "hot cam" kit with some tuning seriously wakes these motors up. Port the 113's with 2.00/1.56 LT4 valves and they'll support over 500hp. On the subject of reverse cooling: Chevy had to bump the LT1's compression up because the heads run so cold. Aluminum heads already retain less combustion heat in the cylinder than iron heads and produce less power for a given static compression ratio. By cooling the heads first, the LT1 really doesn't have a huge advantage over the L98. On the subject of modifying older C4's: There are still guys out there modifying and racing C2 and C3 Vettes. The great thing about fiberglass is it doesn't rust, and with Corvettes being body on frame there's nothing underneath that really can't be rebuilt or upgraded. It not hard, or relatively expensive, to build a serious autocross or road race car from a decent condition C4.
Hi Chris, I have been told it needs a new tach filter 🤷♂️. It’s a little wire and box behind the engine. Pretty easy fix apparently! I’ll make a video when I do! Thanks man. Take care!
I have a 1990 ZR1 with 38K mile , black on black... Thinking about selling it... A was told a set of headers, a chip, and convert it to a single-stage flywheel should bring the HP to 450-470 . It came stock detuned and could still hit 187 MPH
Hi Keith. Thank you very much, I would love to get it re-dyno’d. Maybe this Spring or fall! Thanks for commenting. Had a great Thanksgiving! I hope you did as well! Take care!
@@ad356 The '93 was a first-generation, non-vented Optispark. Even still, 40K miles is an early fail for OEM. Once you replace it, you'll be doing it over and over again as Mitsubishi and Delco no longer make them. Factory stopped selling new units years ago. Final prices were around $1,200 for the part. $50 Chinese knockoffs are just as reliable as a $600 MSD unit. I hope you kept your old OEM Optspark. You can harvest the highly coveted Mitsubishi optical sensor and repurpose it. Rebuilders are paying $$$ for the discontinued sensors.
Some folks add aftermarket air box and filters that are lightly oiled and mess up the MAF sensor. And check for the PROPER Factory plugs and wires being used.
Nice video! I have a 91 vette too and was looking for a video like this to see around what number it makes to the wheels! Thanks for the awesome video!
Hi Thomas, you are very welcome. Thanks for watching. I was hoping to do a dyno this year too but not too sure it’s going to happen! Awesome you also have a 91 :) take care!
Did you sync your TPS and Control valve it just seems a little lagging. Those MPH numbers should go up a litttle faster. I did mine to read I believe 5.4 volts and when they are synced it's crazy how fast it gets.
is your idle ok because you will notice you can turn the screw to adjust it and the computer will just go back to where it was. You need to bypass the computer unplug the idle control valve set your idle speed plug it back in then do your TPS to 5.v volts +/- .3 volts if I remember right and then it will run like you never saw it run before!!!
Mustang dyno or dynojet? If it’s a dynojet it’s more around 180-190. For whatever reason dynojets don’t give the right numbers. Only reason I say this is cause my friend has an 85 C4 vette and said he was half throttle when driving with me, so I’m pretty interested in how much these cars really make

Hi TellMeHD, thanks so much for watching the videos. That means a lot to me. Honestly, when I was 19 (when I bought the car) I knew very little about the C4. I knew a lot about the C6 because it had just came out a few years earlier. I had no idea what I was buying. These days, I would have done a ton of research. To answer your question, I often wish I would have gotten a later year C4 with the LT1. That being said, though, I wouldn’t trade my current car for one. I love that car so much! I am definitely doing another dyno this spring as long as I can figure out why my radiator fans aren’t running. Thanks for commenting. Take care!

I want to know how everything works and how to do most repairs myself because we are talking 30 year old vehicles that even though are very reliable they still need maintenance and repairs. And in today's world paying a good mechanic to do your work costs a lot of money. Not every repair facility has knowledgeable mechanics to work on them. A good scanner is extremely helpful to have, I use a Snap On MT2500 found on ebay for a fraction of their original price. Great cars overall and I'm loving owning one. @@Doulop If you are curious of the history here....and this comes straight from GM-Buick engineers, the 86 Vette was 230HP. The 86 Buick GN was 235HP. In 87 Vette was upped to 240HP. The 87 GN, with zero changes in the engine, was stated as 245HP. For ‘88 the Vette was upped to 250HP. See the trend here? Literally Buick was upping the Vette. The sole reason the ZR-1 was made was to smash the Buick GNx. I love the history here. Source for above info, Documentary Black Air. Its on youtube and its cool to listen to the people responsible for the Buick development and part of their drive was to top the Vette. Despite corporate orders not to do so. Cool stuff for C4 owners to know the lineage.
5000 + rpm makes ZERO difference in power, that tuned port does ZERO beyond that point. The runner length kills ANY chance of making high RPM power. By removing it and replacing it with a TPIS miniram and a set of inch and 3/4s headers will make more power than anything else you do to it. Adding an LT4 hotcam, Manley 22410 springs, and 1.6 ratio roller rockers and youll easily make 125 horsepower touching the ground. Ive built and raced too many of these Corvettes to waste time on the bolt on crap that doesnt work.
This is so stupid, actually disappointing. Just because and engine has has 100k or 150k doesn't mean it should be down on power unless the engine is shot This is like buying a used car with 150k and the owner talks it up, then it has all kinds of issues and the owner says what do you expect it has 150k...

Thanks again, John! Merry Christmas!
@@jaymortensen642
On the subject of intakes:
The LT1 intake can be modified to work on an L98.
On the subject of reverse cooling:
Chevy had to bump the LT1's compression up because the heads run so cold. Aluminum heads already retain less combustion heat in the cylinder than iron heads and produce less power for a given static compression ratio. By cooling the heads first, the LT1 really doesn't have a huge advantage over the L98.
On the subject of modifying older C4's:
There are still guys out there modifying and racing C2 and C3 Vettes. The great thing about fiberglass is it doesn't rust, and with Corvettes being body on frame there's nothing underneath that really can't be rebuilt or upgraded. It not hard, or relatively expensive, to build a serious autocross or road race car from a decent condition C4.
Great LS candidate. Or a bad ass stroker motor with hei msd and holley efi intake
I would love to drop an LS motor in her some day. Maybe in the future. Depends on how well my channel does ;)
Great footage. I dig it. 👊🏻

Great video Jeremy, impressive numbers! I have the same issue with my RPM gauge....keep me posted on the fix.
Wow!! That’s is awesome! Beautiful car you got there! Thanks for commenting. Take care!
The '89 and '90 ZR1s at 375 hp were actually quicker than later models, except for maybe the '93-95 with 405 hp.

I have a 93 c4 has 40k miles, when I put it away for the winter, it seemed to be running pretty rich. Has all new plugs/wires
Hi Jeff, I’m not sure why that would be. I’m really sorry. I don’t know much about engines, I wish I did. Good luck on finding the issue. Take care!
93? that would be an LT1. opti spark maybe? i have a 96 Z28 and i had to replace mine once.
@@RARenfield i have a delhpi unit i bought back in 2014 when i bought the car. not sure what sensor it has
Some folks add aftermarket air box and filters that are lightly oiled and mess up the MAF sensor. And check for the PROPER Factory plugs and wires being used.
Plus the chip took shift points up to 5500, on are stock L98 engines automatics.no 94- 97 lt1 z28 could see me, or my brother.lol
5500 shift points is fine and dandy. But L98's are out of steam and pretty much stop pulling hard at around 4500.

I too have gone up and down in weight 😊
It’s so frustrating. I’ve gained a lot since COVID began. So mad at myself.
Did you sync your TPS and Control valve it just seems a little lagging. Those MPH numbers should go up a litttle faster. I did mine to read I believe 5.4 volts and when they are synced it's crazy how fast it gets.
My year car doesn’t have adjustable TPS. Just plug and play!
@@Doulop there are two bolts that hold it on right? There are 2 arks or curved slots that the bolts are in and thats where you move the TPS.

Only reason I say this is cause my friend has an 85 C4 vette and said he was half throttle when driving with me, so I’m pretty interested in how much these cars really make
I honestly have no idea. This Dyno was done over 10 years ago and I forget what it was.
I'm trying to bump up the power in my '96...not sure if I should bore, and stroke...or turbo...turbo might be cheaper
Go wild with the turbo! They did a vid on engine masters where a small block Chevy nothing special with just a turbo and 12lbs boost made 500 hp!!!! They took it all the way until it exploded at like 560 with 20 lbs boost!!!
Wow!! That’s crazy!

Yes, the later C4 seats were hideous. Mine are awesome!
What year are they. Mine is a 94. I like your better.

Take care!
Uh,that would be 96 LT4. All had ZF 6 speeds.Factory rated @330hp. Most all of them, including mine,Dyno higher. They didn't want to outshine the new body style 97(C5) which was 345hp. Love the C4 content.

Dude. In about 1971 the industry went to SAE Net horsepower and torque rating system which means, at the wheels. If your engine is only putting out 201 HP, it's hurting. BAD. My bone stock 1990 Formula 350 with L98 (rated 245 HP) put out 251 HP at the wheel on the dyno.

Once inside though it feels like an airplane cockpit. If you get one get the 2 factory service manuals and the ""corvette fuel injection and engine management"" book. You can find them all on ebay. I want to know how everything works and how to do most repairs myself because we are talking 30 year old vehicles that even though are very reliable they still need maintenance and repairs. 5000 + rpm makes ZERO difference in power, that tuned port does ZERO beyond that point. The runner length kills ANY chance of making high RPM power.
