At the age of 8 I received my first 10 speed bike. After a month or so riding the cables had stretched and the gears did not work or shift correctly. My Mom kept saying someday she would get it fixed. After a few months of this I finally broke open my piggy bank, jumped on my bike and rode it the 15 miles into town. I studied the map in the phone book to where the bike shop was located. I only had $3.45, the man working in the shop told me to stick around and at the end of the day he would fix my bike for $3.45. I returned home at dark. I left the house as soon as the sun came up. My very first long distance bike ride. I had to ride a two lane highway most the way. I still remember this today at the age of 60.
thats a really great story i live in a metropolitian city i have everything in under 3 miles and i would never experience that but now that i a 17 i do go for 40-60km rides and try to leave my city and then return home ,respect sir
I live in India and here we have no cycling ecosystem so when I ordered my first road bike (tarmac sl7 by the way) I had to drive 3000 kilometres to Delhi without sleeping to pick it up. It was superbly out of my budget so I saved 4 months of my salary to buy it and I even had to get a job during lockdown.I love my bike since and there has not been a single day I have not cleaned it. I take care of it more than myself.
Didn’t put much thought in my first winter as an adult cyclist (2019/20) - this year, I’ve bought some SKS mudguards / DHB shoe covers / a base layer / long sleeve top under my jacket .... all pretty basic things, in retrospect, but they’ve made a massive difference to my overall enjoyment and comfort. Also key to my enjoyment: not riding with other people (what an appalling idea!) and not stopping at cafes for cake!
Has anyone told ever Hank he sounds like a dolphin when he laughs? It's brilliant, and I honestly can't think of a better animal to represent him, as it's the animal kingdom equivalent of him.
On my last ride I heard a cracking noise that definitely wasn't there before, I did indeed spent most of my time wondering where it came from. I decided to stop at a bike repair shop and figured out that my pedal was getting loose. They fixed it and it was such a wonderful ride home!
Si should do the Pan Celtic Race next year. It was my first event last year and I was welcomed into the Clan with open arms. The pre and post event gatherings are Legendary. You won’t regret it.
There could never be a computer that would replace David Duffeild a true legend. It could be the most intense moment of the race and he'd go off on one about a cat he had seen or a piece of cheese he had eaten, and it was never annoying!
Si, if you want to partake in a long distance event, check out the Cyclothon in Iceland. About 1300km, vast majority is paved. Even allowed a support vehicle. There are solo categories and team categories, 4 person teams and 10 person teams. Check it out!
In bed Wednesday morning, in Australia, watching the show as I do every week.... and yes Si, it's gorgeous here - 9 am, 18c & heading to 29c with blue skies 😊☀️ Agree re: creaking bits - recently replaced BB30 & silence has never been so sweet! Great show guys... love the banter !
I can't speak for others but I get absolutely overjoyed when a movement decides to time its exit just before I set out to ride. It's nice to ride with the peace of mind that comes with knowing stomach issues won't be a problem that day.
Race for Si tips: Italy Divide (for "MTB-ish gravel bikes") or for proper MTB, a race organised by my very good friend '1000 Miles' in Czech Republic and Slovakia.
Not wearing gloves when when it's so cold that you need full tights, arm warmers and a vest? I'm still trying to figure out why GCN does this. Bizarre.
Little things that’s mean a lot - equal tightness of shoes. So annoying though easy to solve mid-ride with boa dials, but with laces you need to get them right or it’ll drive you crazy!
Noise is a big thing, I agree. Hate the unknown "click click click" when you're riding. And wind. I hate wind. I enjoy a tailwind like anyone else, but I'd rather ride on a calm day anytime.
3:01 I had an annoying tick tick noise on my bike, tried the bars, stem, cranks, even thought the frame was cracked. Took me ages to find the cause. Turns out it was a loose tyre valve nut rattling on the rim. I don't use them now.
I can’t tell if Hank was on great, or awful form this week. Little things which matter to me: having an accident with a gel or energy drink. EVERYTHING BECOMES STICKY! Caption: “Looks like they need to stump up for some aero wheels...”
Annoying noises for me is my disk brakes - cleaned rotors & pads (and replaced them too!) but still squeal like a banshee on heat - they make for a great bell replacement though!!
Over-shoes and good gloves are life saver in winter! I can even manage to stand in bibshort and jersey while it's freezing outside but I cannot stand to have froozen feet and hands! Some years ago, I had to go back home later than expected and what was ok for a day ride in a late fall season was not ok anymore once the sun was setting. It was starting to get really cold (around 0°c). The most pain came from the "bite" in my frozen ears, hands and feet. The rest of your body is only cold at the beginning, you don't feel the cold on the effort. From that moment, when I'm not sure of the weather on my way back, I'm always taking something to keep my hands and feet warm. Apart from my "ends", I never bother with "rain clothes", I don't care about being wet. The key is to not stop if you're wet and you won't get cold! ;)
Did Hank steal one of the editors doughnuts? Because they were merciless this week! Fantastic show guys, had me giggling like a schoolgirl at Hank's expense
Can GCN do a video comparing all the shimano range of groupsets and see where the specific advantages are as you go up the range towards the higher end ones? I have a Claris on my first bike here and I’m sure there are advantages to upgrading on my next bike, but I don’t see any videos that will really show you side by side where is it that you notice the differences.
Just got to the 12:50 time stamp and the geography section. Nearly spat my morning tea out, very funny. Don't worry Hank, I am sure everyone will forget about it in no time! ;-) (Just argue that you were too young to see the Olympics there!)
It's always sunny here and a bit of rain so we can ride anytime of the year, if winter be hitting come on over to Bali, we've certain do have great places to cycle on and so killer climbs
Proper clothing makes all the difference. A while back I dropped my aversion to having anything on my back and now I carry along one of those light fabric bags with the draw strings that can be worn over the shoulders like a light backpack. It lives in the jersey pocket until I need it. Now I have less resistance to bringing along enough warm clothes because in the past I didn't have a good way to carry them after the day warmed up. Here in Colorado in the winter it could easily be -4 C to start a ride and 9 or 10 C by the end. And while my neoprene booties make me look like I'm wearing Mickey Mouse shoes, I love how they keep my feet warm and dry. And they last a long time.
The bolt through the seat post should be considered more of a 'hack' but only on a select few bikes. The picture shown was of an aluminum Schwinn from the early 90's that had no seat post binding bolt. The way it worked way with a wedge built into the seatpost that worked similarly to an old quill stem. Without that Suntour seatpost the frame is useless. Side note, those seatposts generally sell for way more on eBay than the complete bike does.
You talk about it ruining your ride when you get wet and cold to the bone, but I disagree, I went out a week ago for an hour and by the end I could legit feel water going in and out of my socks. But it was great fun 😂😂
Haha, little noises. It took me literally months to work out that the incessant rattling on my bike was the little buttons on my Garmin head unit. It was driving me absolutely mad. I stopped it by gluing some small pieces of rubber band inside the silicon cover.
The correct place of the 'shave line', the line upon which you stop shaving, is the reason for many successful and broken relationships. It is not just Si and Hank.
Trans am bike race. It probably doesnt count as bikepacking cause its a road race, but fully self supported and a perfect opportunity for si to come to america!

Si's observations about speed differentials are right on the money. And it goes further, too, than mere bugaboos about comfort and annoyances. Speaking as a cyclist experienced on the roadways of Manhattan, speed differentials are a matter of safety in traffic. Being able to cycle in traffic where speed differentials (with vehicular volume) are de minimis eliminates a great deal of risk (even though many motorists become enraged at cyclists who are commonly faster than they!). Simon is quite correct: my biggest risk factor on the Apple's streets originates from ignorant pedestrian traffic who are moving at 25-30km slower speeds than mine, and step into a bike lane while gazing at their cell phones... Ride on!
A Back Packing Race on the Donegal 555km Route which Connor failed to Complete t on his 1 day challenge. In fairness he stopped after 450km which was an incredible effort. Im sure he would love to tackle this challenge again. Could I suggest you Start and finish at Malin Head the most northerly point in Ireland. Ive personally cycled the whole route Over 2 weeks with lots of Pints of Guinness in between.
What are the little things that really matter to you when riding? Let us know 👇
Pre ride loo break. Otherwise the mind can wander tragically from the ride.
A buff! Acts as a mask if I need to stop anywhere on my rides. Been carrying one with me since the beginning of lockdown.

Definitely the noise that you're trying to figure out what's causing it is worse. Completely distracts from the enjoyment
I’ve been missing the legendary Matt Stephens, but kudos to Hank for stepping up.
