  • Douglas Murray joins the show to discuss his column in the magazine. In it he lays out the strange and perverse obsession the British public has with trivial stories. Instead, he believes there are far bigger fish to fry - housing crisis, inflation, NHS waiting list. But is Douglas at risk of being a snob?

I grew up in a caravan. I am snobby, but certainly not in regards to wealth and status.
The ability to be kind and to know something of the world and suffering are what make me respond to someone most keenly.
On the flip side, those who know very little, but imagine they know everything, appall me. The stink of societal narcissism is the smell of a civilisation in decay.
      Greetings friend.

The fact that very large numbers of the population are going along with everything they are being told, is the real concern. The Meghan and Harry story is another example of the trivial and as Douglas said there are huge issues that need addressing, not frivolous stories about celebrities. Whether that is Phillip Schofield or Meghan Markle who have both dominated the front pages for weeks at a time. These stories are choreographed by parts of the media, I am sure intentionally in many cases, to distract from real issues in government.

Meghan and Harry are a far more serious case.
You are after all talking of a potential Head Of State in charge of reigning over not just the UK, but at least 14 other Realms.
An option that totally despises that potential role, and insults that position by reducing it to an Institution that is no different from a company CEO. I can assure you that NZ would be in civil war with him in charge within a week.

Two simple questions for ITV and Schofield to answer. Is there an NDA in place that Schofields young lover had to agree to. If yes will They lift that NDA so the whole truth about what took place and when can be examined. At a stroke this will end all the speculation surrounding this whole issue.

GB News and Talk TV would say they are giving the people what they want. I suggest that they are giving the people what they can't resist. Some of us long for the old days when news was news and journalists investigated and didn't share their opinions and commentators who had opinions were not competing for the limelight.

Well Doug, we've had Savile, Rolf and Glitter.
Pip enjoyed Thursday "playtimes" on the mat at his London pad, away from the gaze of his wife and children, with a young person, who he "mentored" from age 15, and who when aged 18 got the job as Pip's 'best boy' at ITV.
ITV Management knew of the "rumours" since 2019, but covered up this highly "unethical" and sordid matter to protect the "brand(s)", similar to BBC management with Saville, Harris and Glitter earlier.
Holly, knowing the above rumours about Pip which were common knowledge for years among her team, and following the guilty verdict of Pip's 54-year-old brother Tim last month, 12 year prison sentence for 11 sexual offences involving a child, took steps to protect her own brand and distanced herself from Pip.
The lying, the deflection, the feigned ignorance to limit the damage to the principals ensued.
No one in ITV management have given a fleeting thought to the young man's welfare or their legal duty of care to him.

Focusing on trivial offenses is a symptom of cynicism. The widespread belief that all politicians never keep their promises, are corrupt, and accomplish little leads to a preoccupation with unimportant misdemeanors. The pursuit of titillation via famous peoples' indiscretion produces intellectual atrophy. Why do the heavy lifting of thinking about solutions to problems that matter, when one can get off on other peoples' salacious foibles.
