    SOLVED! Went into HVAC unit in attic to check wires and noticed the purple E fuse (actually just a 3 amp buss automotive fuse) was blown. This was caused by me turning off the AC breaker only when installing the Nest, but not turning off the Furnace breaker also. Duh. Turned off breakers again, replaced fuse, restored power, and all is good. Thanks to other commenters for leading me to the fuse issue

    Had the same problem. Common wire for sure. I just installed a Nest E today and my old thermostat used AA batteries and no common wire. Fortunately it was available so I attached it to the Nest, but it didn't work until I hooked it up on the furnace too. Thanks for the suggestions! Make sure you power off your system before messing with the wires 🙂

    • @jcwy999
      @jcwy999 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      FYI, I had been using the Nest E for over 1.5 years and had the E195 Error recently. Similar to your old thermostat, mine old one used AA batteries and doesn't have a common wire. Since I don't have the extra common/brown wire, I just went back to my old thermostat and had to reset my AC compressor outside. Everything work fine now.
      **I am not sure if there was any Nest E updates that caused the thermostat requiring more power. I guess there is some truth to the old saying, "if it's not broken, don't fix it".

    Good one, that’s exactly the issue faced by me too, but Nest short cycles the AC so many times that the compressor breaks down. They will never ever acknowledge this or accept. BTW one of the worst and worthless customer service you get. Nest customers are on their own. Many homes have just 4 wires in a typical AC/ Gas Furnace type setups. While C wire is the best way to go, the hassle of running C wires ( 2 of them in my case, as it is Dual Zone set up) is a huge hassle and mess. Asking a pro to do it is not worth it for the purpose why I chose Nest in first place. So the alternative is to setup to Run the fan for 15 mins every hour. This way Nest will get charged even on days when neither the AC or Heat is likely to get turned on ( usually April / May months and Late Sep / Oct in northern USA) Nest scavenges power from the cooling or hearing cycle. Any time there is an issue below 3.6 V, Nest will act up.

    • @endersingh3180
      @endersingh3180 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Compressor breakdown is not the nest issue. Get a professional to come to diagnose your issue, and stop being cheap. There are so many reasons why your system can short cycle.

    In our case it was a bad (intermittent) 24V transformer in the HVAC cabinet. Use a DVM to see if you are getting 24VAC to the blue and red wire that connect to the Nest to see if this might be your problem.

    I had this happen to me yesterday, Turned out the float switch was full, meaning it turns off power to the thermo stat to keep from over flowing, result was the drain line was clogged, cleaned it out and has been going without problems since, I knew it wasn’t the breaker and fuse in the furnace because it would turn on it’s own after a certain amount of time passed.

      I think Nest must know of something we don't. Earlier today we had this issue with our 2nd Gen thermostat except the error is E30, no power to Y1 and now about 4 hours later at another property we are having the same issue with our Nest E with the E195 error No Power to R. This is not a coincidence. With our 2nd Gen we swopped the wires Y1 with G and the system was back to normal. After everything seemed to be fine support advised me to switch it back to the correct configuration Yellow to Y1 and Green to G. Its been running no issues so far. We did have a storm about 2 weeks before all this started happening that gave us to very short outages. So maybe that has something to do with it.

    Thanks for the video. My Nest worked for three months. I had fully charged it via a USB cable before installation. I had a four wire system and installed Nest per instructions. A couple days ago furnace started cycling every 90 seconds. I found the e195 error and my Nest battery was less than 3 6V. Installing a "C" wire on the Nest and in my furnace worked like a charm and my Nest voltage is a constant 3.9V now.
    I found a fifth wire tucked back in my wall after I found the fifth wire not being used inside my furnace. One note. I saw another installation video from a professional HVAC installer who always repurposes the fan (green) wire and connects that in both the furnace and on the Nest as a "C" wire. He said most newer systems do not have the ability to run a fan separately. I don't know if that is true or not since I do run the fan separately with mine sometimes.

  • @gregschnieder6073

    Its a Nest problem. They will lie to you and say they will pay to have it checked but the restrictions are so tight you will never get the $. Also you will likely have a ripoff repair guy come and charge you $100's to "fix" it. Maybe Im being a bit aggressive but just as in car repairs if you are told something needs to be replaced ALWAYS require them to provide you with the "Broken" part before paying. In fact always let them know you will want it ahead of time. "Oh, really? Can you make sure you give me the broken one because I think we had it replaced before. I think it may still be under warranty."

    In my case with the AC unit it didn't have anything to do with wires. The AC didn't run for a couple days because the weather was cool so the condensation water backed up to the Save-T-Switch. All I had to do is vacuum the water from the condensation pipe outside the house and the AC kicked in and started running right away. Nest started getting power to the red wire and everything is back to normal now. Lesson learned: remember to vacuum the condensation pipe every couple of months.

    • @davidknight9480
      @davidknight9480 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Same here. The condensate unit was clogged with algae, so the system wasn't draining, which tripped the float switch, which cut off the power to the thermostat (hence the error).

    I am running into the same problem on my Nest Gen 1. Was working fine for 7 years then the thermostat could not detect power on the Rc wire. My furnace is fine because I can also jump the furnace to start. My guess is that it might be a FW upgrade that is requiring more power and the CPU is running more often. But the strange thing is that my Nest Gen 2 does not have this problem.
    So essentially Google is requiring their Nest customers hundreds of dollars of HVAC service fees in order to use their product?

  • @CarlosGonzalez-mr5qz
    @CarlosGonzalez-mr5qz 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    For me the cause was error code 13 on my furnace. Flame rollout switch had tripped. There are several things that can cause this. One thing is to check any obstructions in vent pipe. I had placed a fine mesh screen outside at the exhaust due to wasps building a nest there. I removed the screen and also pulled apart the S-shaped exhaust. Found another old piece of wasps nest there. Dumped that out and put everything back together. It is winter now and maybe ice was forming on that screen. I reset the switch at the furnace and now the Nest is working. If the switch trips again I know I have a problem.

    I wish I could show a picture of my error and wiring, I have the Nest thermostat gen E installed one for my upstairs and downstairs units and they both have been working fine until now and receiving this exact same issue and error code. My condensers look to be turning on normally outside at least the fans are spinning on both so it seems there’s power there. Here’s how wired the next. Blue to common (C) Red to (Rh) White to (W1) Green to (G) Yellow to (Y1) and like I said no issues until now downstairs only and my thermostat just turned off now completely. I tried resetting my breaker but not sure what I should do any thoughts to correct my error message that says, “the power from your equipment to the thermostat may be turned off?” Then it shows Warning code E74 no power to RH wire detected?
    Please help I need to get up and running again. It’s not cooling downstairs for sure.

    Nest is junk. Got the an error on the coldest night of the year. Had to troubleshoot at 2am by removing the ac wire. Yellow. What a joke. Definitely a nest issue. Back to old reliable Honeywell.

    • @Gamma1227
      @Gamma1227 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Actually this is an issue in which the ac has a low pressure safety switch. Any powerstealing thermostat would have haf the same issue. When the outsidr temperature reaches a certain low temp, the ac unit will shut off power to itself in order to prevent it from running by accident, which will cause system damage. When this happens, the nest cannot charge itself because there is no power flowing through the yellow y1 wire. The easy fix is to either remove y1 and temporarely lose access to your ac unit, or to have a common wire, common maker, isolation relay, etc, installed. This is an extremely common feature in many ac units. Again, any smart, powerstealing thermostat will have the same issue.

      Gamma1227 I've never heard of this AC unit feature before, but my Nest was throwing an error about the Y1/AC wire so I unplugged it and we're all good now. Thanks for the info and solution!

    Before you do any of that check switch first if you have one next to your furnace. Ours was off, we turned on and Thermostat worked as normal. Easy fix to same error message. Second potential easy fix if above did not apply to you. Verify circuit breaker. I would turn off switch and then back on. It doesn't hurt anyways other than resetting clocks if any just like when one loses power.

    Fuse box wasn't tripped. Ended up tightening the screws holding red wire on the furnace side and restarted the nest. That seems to have fixed things

    Still having the same problem - once I got the C wire connected it stops recognizing the RH wire.... The HVAC guy says its the Nest and to try to get a new one. Any ideas?

    I don't get it, how do you just "activate" a brown wire. Wish I could just activate them all to work right.

    Rude people in these comments telling my man to hurry up...damn, y'all don't know how to fast forward or what? Even better yet, keep a cheap ass back-up thermostat for emergencies.

    When the battery in the nest thermostat starts to go bad it will give you an error. But if you run a common wire that will rectify the problem.

  • @FillingTheGap1

    Mine solution was different, same code. The blower fan continued running and got LED code 33 on the furnace, that combination = limit switch fail. Tested switch and stuck open, replaced switch and now working again.

    ever since the update my wifi disconnected for weeks and recently no rh power. good thang the blue C wrie was tucked away behind the thermostat. it was never needed prior to software update. connected C wire to furnace C marking on circuit board and all is werking fine again with wifi and nest unit charging.

      The appt. complex installed these things a month ago... mine quit... appears to be not charging. Good idea, wait till they get these things right. BTW, took off a perfectly working old honeywell (the round one). It was prolly inservice for 10 years or so... just sayin

    There is absolutely no way that thing works for 6 months prior to this video. They don’t work without a common wire

    • @Scoop2992
      @Scoop2992 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sean, I have had mine for 3 months and it got the same error after being installed that long running with no common wire. I believe what happens is the Nest battery gets too low and then it does not work properly. Just a guess since right now, I have my old thermostat reconnected so I have heat.

    • @Scoop2992
      @Scoop2992 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Checked Battery voltages and indeed, mine worked until the thermostat battery got below 3.6V. Now with a common wire, it stays at 3.9V

  • @diastoleny

    Bullshit!!! Manufacturer should have been much clearer about the need for additional wiring. Not going to pay an electrician for this. Not easy for me to wire in my home. I just buy a new unit and return the old one every 3 months! I'm on my 7th "exchange"!

    Possibly a thicker gauge wire would solve the problem. Any kinks in a wire and cold temperatures can affect electron flow.
