Snow tires are good if you live in snow bound areas, otherwise a good set of Snow and Mud rated tires are very good, specially for a 4 wheel drive vehicle. They are also very good in heavy rain. Snow chains are best in very heavy snow or Ice, but you have to know how to put them on. Special winter tires are very effective to cars in snow bound areas, but only on plowed roads.

If you have a 4x4, vehicle and frequently do off roading, BF Goodrich tyres are best ones available in all terrain category. They are Mud+Snow rated and best suited for harsh conditions like what we see in this video. In fact, there's a video of an old generation Thar fitted with these tyres driving in thick snow in J&K without snow chains.

Have seen frozen ice to 1m of snow on mountains much dangerous & narrow. Winter tires are must. and of course on frozen + slopes its mandatory to put chains NOT only for own safety but for other vehicles.
