Do Super Shoes Benefit "Slower" Runners? The Latest Research.

  • This episode (138) is all about super shoes, particularly their benefits for the non-elite runner. At the beginning of the year, Geoff Burns and Dustin Joubert published a new study looking at the running economy benefits of super shoes for runners at slower paces (8:00-10:00 minutes per mile). They were gracious enough to lend us a ton of their time to discuss their latest findings. Get a behind the scenes look at how studies like these are put together and executed. Hear how Geoff performed test on himself during a treadmill marathon! Learn more about how much benefit the average runner can get from super shoes, how much they aid in reducing muscle breakdown, and how to pick the best super shoe for you.
    This week’s episode of the Doctors of Running Podcast is sponsored by Running Warehouse. As runners, we love the outdoors and the positive impact it can have on our health and on the well-being of future generations.

    About the Guests
    Dr. Geoff Burns is a physiologist and engineer with an expertise in running. He works for the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee as a Sport Physiologist, and he conducts academic research with the University of Michigan. His work has focused on running biomechanics and performance. Geoff is a runner himself and competes internationally in ultramarathons. He was the 2016 USA national champion in the 100km and has finished 5th at the 100km World Championships, twice, in 2016 and 2018.
    Dustin Joubert has a PhD in Exercise Physiology from Texas A&M University (2015). He was a faculty member in the Department of Kinesiology at Stephen F. Austin State University from 2015-2022 before landing at his current academic home at St. Edward's University in the great running community of Austin, TX. After publishing the first super shoe comparison study, he realized there was a great interest in objective running shoe performance reviews, independent of brand partnerships. He started an Instagram page in September 2021 with the goal of sharing such data. After some success there, he decided to start his website in September 2022 to better catalog the testing and reviews he has done and continue to do with the goal of also reaching a larger audience beyond Instagram alone.

    Just FASCINATING guys!!!! Thanks so much!!! This made my run this evening just fly by listening along!! I'm another 60-year-old, and do LOVE my Alphaflys, but love having lots of different shoes actually. 🙏🏻👍🏻🙋🏻‍♀

    For me, super shoes have helped me with injury prevention. I prefer them when I’m running on asphalt (although the nimbus 25 is working well for me too).

    By the way.. I have the Novablast 3 which I hate and the Superblast which I LOVE. I am 60 and slow.. But superfoams work. As well as a good front rocker like in the Endorphin Pro 3.

      Nimbus 25 compliments both of those.

      The shoes I bought for this year N25, Endorphin Pro 3 and Superblast. I've really enjoyed running in all of them. The foams and stack heights have definitely saved me from getting too beat up.

      Novablast introduced Achilles pain. Remove it from my rotation, likely too late.

    This was a really interesting listen guys, thanks. Loved the guest, could listen to him a lot. I guess a factor not in the study, but would definitely produce yet another set of variables would be athlete weight. I imagine there's a very crude linear relationship between pace and general physical condition (speaking from my own experience 😂) where a 200lbs runner at 8-10min mile pace is probably compressing the foam and loading the plate in a very different way to a 140lb runner at 6min mile pace. I'm adamant my experience underfoot is vastly different from most the athletes and shoetubers I follow from bodyweight differences alone.

      You're bang on with this. So many shoetube reviews are almost worse than useless when the reviewer is 6 inches and 50lbs lighter

    This was a fabulous podcast. I know that for someone wanting easy answers they will hate it. I loved it because its not that often you get to hear these academic discussions "behind the scenes" if you will. To add something not said was hills and I think the plate itself helps get you up the hill (in some cases). Also you touched on the comfort issue but there is also a stability issue. Like the adidas prime x is so unstable! So you are spending more energy just trying to keep your balance, or at least it feels that way which in both cases comes at a cost.

      Great point. How do you rotate the VF super shoe with other shoes every week? Thanks!!!

    • @i.p2088
      @i.p2088 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@rajkumarraosinhji1397 I use the Vaporfly V2 only for maximum effort. Anything slower will hurt my Achilles Tendon.. For long runs and recovery runs I use the Triumph 20 and Superblast. Superblast for the longest runs because it is light. Tempo runs I do in the 361 Flame ST and Speed 3. Threshold Endorphin Pro 3 and Metaspeed Edge plus. To many fast shoes and not enough daily trainer.

    A test between Altra Vanish Tempo and Carbon would be interesting as they use the same foam less the plate. Weight also differs a bit.

    Thanks for a bit of sanity in the world of marketing! Interesting point about treadmill softness vs asphalt - how about the self-propelled / non-motorized treadmills like the Assault Fitness’ Air Runner? The slats seem to have less “give” under touch-down impact (but I don’t weigh much).

  • @jsanchezbcn
    @jsanchezbcn ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great video! I usually run on that 8-10 min/mile pace and I’m starting to use super shoes (vaporfly) for training and I love them, it’s hard to go back to the regular daily trainers afterwards. Good to understand why.

    I lolled at "I think they should lean into that" at 1:14:40. I thought the same thing at first, that HG stood for mercury, evidently replacing the lead in PWRRUN PB.🤣Fascinating stuff, y'all. I'd be interested whenever you cared to revisit the topic.

    The NB trainer is ridiculous in terms of energy saving on the roads. I say that now as a runner who got a little too heavy between when I used to run and race in the Vaporfly and now. I was skeptical a few years ago, but my own anecdotal experience has made me a believer in the energy return is super real in super shoes, certainly on the roads.

    Slow runner and 240 pounds. The under armour velociti flow elite is really solid. I like it because it isn't a crazy carbon plated shoe and it's not stacked all the way up to the empire state building.
    UA very under rated and will be a force in the future.

    Thanks for sharing. One of the things that y’all mentioned is about cadence and pace make me curious. I’m slow runner with pace of 9:30min for half marathon but my cadence is around 175-180. Does it mean I am not put enough force on my superblast shoes? How do they, pace and cadence, correlate to each other? I mean with 175-180 of cadence, my pace should be sub 8min? I’m just confused.

    Aside from speed and running form I would hypothesise that the performance of any shoe but particularly a 'super race shoe' would be significantly different for someone weighing 60kg vs someone over 90kg.

      Absolutely. If you use stryd you can see the power going through your feet. Heavy runner at the same Speed generate more power. I am 68kg and after 300 km my shoes still look brand new..
