  • Paul Dano has had a remarkable career in film for more than twenty years and yet he still has never been nominated for an Academy Award. In this video, I talk about his many acclaimed performances and discuss the reasons why he continues coming up short on Oscar nominations morning. #pauldano #oscars #academyawards #brianrowevideo #elusiveoscar

He just needs to have a role that is so unexpected and captivating that it would guarantee him a nomination and a possible win.

He literally did just that in There Will Be Blood! Yeah he was young and newer on the scene but still, should have been nominated at least

Paul Dano's performance in There Will Be Blood is incredible. Definitely should have got him at least nominated. He's reliably great in everything I've seen him in to be honest. I think you covered most of his career highlights - it must only be a matter of time before he's undeniable for a nomination and possible win.

If I had go put money on any actor in the next five years to get an Oscar nomination, it would be Paul Dano. I think his issue is similar to Toni Collettes and that is simply that he's so chameleonic that people just look over him and forget how brilliant he is. Kind of got Amy Adams issues in that he's always incredible and gives understated performances and sadly the academy prefers their loud performances and narratives. A solid consistently good actor will never have the narrative that other nominees will have. That's why DiCaprio, Pacino and Paul Newman took so long to win. Purely and only because they're consistently great and their narratives are pretty much only 'he's great'

So I was a writer who loved movies about writers, which means I loved Ruby Sparks. And I know we're talking about Paul's elusive Oscar, but I think Zoe should have been recognized for that screenplay that she wrote. 👍

  • @kareninacarado
    @kareninacarado ปีที่แล้ว +29

I think Paul will definitely get nominated within the next 5-10 years. He would need a juicier role and a narrative to propel him and his potential nomination. I also had the same sentiments with Scarlett Johansson and why it took her many years to get nominated for an Oscar (well, she got two nominations in the same year!), ever since she gave a memorable performance in Lost in Translation. Her role in Marriage Story was inspired by her own divorce from her second marriage and she also starred in the final Avengers film, which kept her in public discussion throughout awards season. Plus a role in which she had a German accent in Jojo Rabbit. Two Oscar nominations as a reward after many years of being the sixth in line or so for awards final list.
Paul being bypassed by his much older co-star Judd Hirsch didn’t help. Same scenario with Caitríona Balfe over Judi Dench in Belfast, despite Caitríona getting nominated to all precursors bar the Oscar. I guess there’s now the new rule - they will pick the elderly veteran actor who might probably die in the next couple of years or retire soon - an Oscar nomination would be a good send-off as a tribute to their careers, as that role in the film might be their last chance. If Paul will reunite with Brian Cox for another movie, one of them should go as lead and the other as supporting, so no vote splitting. (And I’d love Brian to get an Oscar nomination soon! Succession’s now finished and next year he’ll return to the West End, then do screen work in between)

I remember seeing Love & Mercy at the SXSW film festival. It was a very potent and close-to-home emotional film for me. I had to fight my tears because I was seated close to the stage. I don’t think Paul was there. John Cusack, Brian Wilson himself and his wife, and director Bill Pohlad were there for the screening. I’ve seen L.I.E., Little Miss Sunshine, There Will Be Blood and Ruby Sparks by then, and simply felt his turn as the younger Brian Wilson was his most powerful performance yet. I was upset he didn’t get in then, and that he has been passed over yet again. I really hope he finally gets recognized soon. He is such a talented actor and budding filmmaker that it shouldn’t be that hard for the Academy to see that too.

I've always liked Paul Dano, but he's been an absolute favorite of mine since he played Pierre in the BBC's War and Peace in 2016. He carried the 6-hr miniseries with beautifully endearing awkwardness (I'm a little sad you didn't mention it, but I can't expect everyone to be as big into classic literature adaptations as I am). I agree, his first nomination could very well be in the next 5 years!

I’m reminded of Judi Dench taking over the Best Supporting Actress slot occupied by Catriona Balfe for Belfast. Hirsch is nowhere near as beloved as Dench, but it feels like the same kind of sentimental late career love letter.
I’m more confident that Dano’s time will come with the Academy than I am Balfe’s, but I could honestly see him being overlooked for a long time yet. He’s a very understated actor, and when I think of him, I don’t necessarily think of films that play to the glamorous sheen of the mainstream, or the flavour of the moment.
That said, I do think he’ll probably barrel through the competition the moment he gets the nom. It’ll be REALLY hard for any pretty boy movie star or prestige vet to compete with anything strong enough to get Under the Radar King Dano into the final five.
I’ll also add that Hong Chau this year is a great example of why mourning a missed nomination isn’t always the end of the story. The Whale didn’t make it into Best Picture, but Hong Chau kicked category staple Dolly DeLeon (who I thought early on was in the top three Oscar contenders) out of the Supporting Actress category. The hive mind does remember.

Judd hirsch getting the Oscar nod over Paul reminds me exactly of what happened last year when Judi dench got a Oscar nomination over caitriona balfe for Belfast it’s seems similar to Judi and caitriona situation Judd got over Paul bc he’s more recognized by the Oscar’s having gotten a Oscar nod previously for ordinary people and the confusion surrounding Paul and caitriona screen time in each of their respected films over rather they really supporting or actually co-leads, but it is unfortunate bc I really Paul was gonna get into especially when braid Pitt stems and the overall hype for Babylon slow down, and 2/5 slots seemed wide open

Is a Johnny Depp and the elusive oscar a possibility?

Too early for him to be part of elusive oscar

He's been giving stellar performances for 20 years and major awards buzz for 15. How is that too early?

Fair criticism. I wanted to do one more Elusive Oscar about someone involved in the previous awards season, and his was the story I most wanted to tell.

nothing against dano, but i think part of his problem is, when you said he's not even forty, i laughed and said, i didnt think he was even thirty...

He's not done yet, i read he's signed up to do The Wizard of The Kremlin. Sounds like an Oscar coming to him in 2025. We shall see.😊

Unfortunately, to the masses, I think he is a “oh yeah…that guy…yeah, he was good.” actor. I hate the term, but his “brand” is fairly nebulous and the Academy still doesn’t know what to make of him. He badly needs to find his Walter White.

He doesn't shine in the movie if we are honest, and the character is not the most memorable

    Paul Giamatti
Keith David is also someone i admire but i fear he hasn't gotten a role to sink his teeth into

I am sadly on the side of Tarantino....In my very subjective opinion, I just don't think he's really that great of an actor...he's not bad either but I wouldn't say he has done anything that is oscar worthy yet.
