    Thank you for making this clear concise video on the different types of vices/holdfasts. It was just what I was looking for to make a decision on how to finish my bench.

    Good one James. BTW, didn't you have a bench hook, to hold your work for cross cut sawing?

    • @WoodByWright
      @WoodByWright  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes, but I will cover that when I talk more about non-clamping work holding.

    Hi James, nice video on the different types and options for holding. I am working with a Doe's Foot. Are you familiar with it? For me I personally like it.

    Would you ever set up so you can work an edge with the plane vertical, rather than horizontal? Just curious.

    • @WoodByWright
      @WoodByWright  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure. There are 100 ways to do it. And everyone finds the way that works well for them in their situation.

    veritas bench pups are geniuse you get a tail vice fave vice and with some blocks of wood you can even do edge work it's only limitation is ends and with a leg vice you can also make a dog pop up in the end and use it as a tail vice

    Hi, Where did you get your face vise from? Does it have a quick release mechanism? Thanks!

    • @WoodByWright
      @WoodByWright  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I got mine off of Craigslist. It has a half screw which is kind of like a quick release. these were common back in the 50s but not so much now. you can find them ar reTool stores from time to time.

    Thanks for the awesome info James! I really need to modify my bench to have the dog holes go all the way through(I currently have drawers so opted to use lee valley prairie dogs which have springs on the bottom) for some hold downs.

    • @WoodByWright
      @WoodByWright  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      there are pros and cons to both. most of mine go through, but some of them land on a stretcher or vice.

    Hi james I was just looking at your hold fast and the one with the leafy shape on the end what size is that ( like how long is the arm and how much of a curve is in it? I was give some bright mild steel its 3/4 round bar and i want to forge to hold fast for my bench and when i seen yours i said i would like to make mine like that or if you can trace them on to paper maybe you could scan that and email it to me and i will make a vid on making them thanks justin

    I just started reading, yesterday, the book "Workbenches: From Design & Theory to Construction & Use". In one section, the author lists a dozen or so activities that need fastening to the bench (e.g. Chiseling faces, Sanding, Adjusting Joinery) along with discussions on the first, second (up to fifth) best methods to do that job. I was disappointed there weren't nearly enough pictures, but this video really helps. Please go into more detail!

    • @WoodByWright
      @WoodByWright  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks. i have the same book. A lot of good info there. I have done a few videos in each vice that go into more detail and have several more planned. if there is any particular one you want next let me know. thanks for watching.

  • @intjonmiller
    @intjonmiller 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Reading Christopher Schwarz' book on workbenches and withholding changed my work, and not just my woodworking. Even before I built a Roubo style bench I drilled a few 3/4" holes in my combo rolling table saw and work bench and made some simple wonder dogs or whatever they're called (bench dogs with a screw cross-drilled into the top). That and paired screw clamps for edge work held me over for quite a while.

    • @WoodByWright
      @WoodByWright  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Love that book! I was going back and forth on talking about "wonder Dogs" but decided not to talk about them for time sack and they are kind of a derivative of a mobile tail vice. but I will have to do a video on those at a future time. I am also wanting to do a future video on passive holding. Oh the fun of youtube format.

    Good info. Trying to finish my bench up currently. Finding I probably shoulda spent the money for a good tail vice. The used face vice and the moxon style I built myself aren't turning out to well. Hopefully I'll figure out how to make them both work until I can afford a good one

    Thanks James, You mentioned it in your dedicated Hold fast video but I would have given it a few seconds in this video and that is the small board with the birds mouth. Very effective Mine is only 3/8" thick so good for the majority of jobs without getting in the way.

    There! I watched the entire 12 minutes again, where I really only come here for the intro joke......😂 Just kidding ofcourse James. Thumbs up for another very informative video. Maybe you'd like to consider a video on splitting logs with a froe. A somewhat forgotten tool even older than the good old handsaw. Greetings and salutations from Hans.

      Thanks! that is very high on my list. that is one tool I have not yet ben able to afford when a decent one has popped up. I have worked with them on the past but have not had one of my own. I want to sd a video on riving lumber for a project. thanks again!

    • @WoodByWright
      @WoodByWright  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Ernie Souza if it fits yes. I just like to keep the wood itself away from the greasy bars if at all possible. But you can definitely do that

      thanks. I am in the prosses of restoring that one, but I might not be able to . several teeth are missing and the second man grip is all rusted out. but at 5 1/2' long it sure is a sweet saw.

      @NightWoodworker 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nope, I prefer vises to hold my work :)
      Jokes aside, they would help me a lot when making grooves or chopping...
      They are pretty far on my purchase list :/
      The first thing on my list is a good rip saw beacuse a couple of days ago I need one desperately for some door trim...
      Now I'm in my bed, healing my back...

    • @WoodByWright

      with a good tail vice they are less needed, but for me they are just fun. if you ever swing by the shop I could give you a saw or two. I have several in stock now.

    Don't the hold fasts leave marks on softer woods?

    • @WoodByWright
      @WoodByWright  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      that is why you would use a protection scrap, but even then you really have to hit it to put that much pressure on it. some people glue on leather feet to them.

  • @dorshem-tov2470
    @dorshem-tov2470 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    so it seems like having a moxon for a face vise and using it also as a tail vise is pretty much the best all around choice and is fairly cheap and easy to make as well, i have a moxon that attaches to my bench (not as fancy as yours), when i work on the face of a borad i just put scraps undrneath it in my vise to elevate it above the jaws but u do need more clamping capasity for that

    • @dorshem-tov2470

    • @dorshem-tov2470
      @dorshem-tov2470 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      i'd prefer that to if i wasnt living in a small apartment, i have a VERY small workbench that's why my moxon is a separate unit, i was thinking about switching to a leg vice but thanks to you that moxon is gonna live to see another day
