  • Toruń / Poland (German: Thorn) is a historical city located north-central of the country. Torun is known for its old town and being the birthplace of the famous astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus.
    The old town (Stare Miasto) of Toruń is also an UNESCO heritage sight which we visit on this walk as we also did on another walk: • Walking in TORUN / Pol...
    We start our tour at the Toruń Dragon, a small statue and get to explore the many streets of Torun. The city is preparing for the Bela Skyway Festival for light installations at night ( • Walking in TORUN / Pol... ).
    Filmed in August 2019

    Lovely place, great for an overnight stay if you are going to or from Gdansk or Krakow. Stayed there in July 2022, next door to The Gingerbread Museum which has a wonderful smell filling the street. Chilling on a beer boat on the riverside in the evening was fantastic. Like Warsaw's Old Town, it's really the touristy part of a much bigger modern city and also like most places in Poland bars and restaurants seem to close really early!

      For me it was also just one night there. It seems like enough if you leave late and also have a stroll on the 2nd day before leaving. There are a total of 3 videos recorded in Torun on the channel

      You are aware that huge parts of contemporary Poland belonged to the German-speaking hemisphere for several hundreds of years. Also this city Torun (German: Thorn) does not only have a Polish but a German heritage, too.

      Thank you! There are more walks in Torun linked in the description. This video here was the first one I recorded. I'm currently in Poland though on a different route getting to towns I have't been - like Lublin right now. All the existing Poland videos are from 2019/2020 so a few new ones will come up soon. Warsaw is also on the channel, BTW. Thanks for watching!

      I guess foreigners still have a lot of misconceptions about Poland coming from Soviet Bloc times. Those misconceptions, as well as Poland itself has been changing rapidly in last 15-20 years though.

    Pretty nice, but since it is a World Heritage site, it could be a bit better kept. A typical city in that area: Polish, but German Prussian-looking ... Good job.

    • @blinkblinkRNB
      @blinkblinkRNB 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Not really, Toruń (founded by Slavs since "ethnic" Prussians are not of German descent) was, at one time, the third largest city in the Polish Kingdom which, btw., is much older than "Germany" or even Prussia. Indeed, some buildings are "German" looking but the old-town was mainly built long before the big migration period (prussian settlement commission) took place in the 18th and 19th century (which does not mean that there were no Germans before). Also: If you look closely, most buildings look like the ones you'd typically find in Krakow.

    • @hordeman8933
      @hordeman8933 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@blinkblinkRNB The same Krakow, built largely by german-speaking bourgeoisie?

    • @blinkblinkRNB
      @blinkblinkRNB 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@hordeman8933 You are not wrong insofar as Germans indeed had a huge impact (since krakow became a multicultural city eventually + capital of Poland). Germans and jews were the largest minorty at that time. And unlike Jews (who were mostly poor) it was the German nobility that immigrated into Poland. However, Polish architecture is "aware" of its multi-cultural roots hence it has its own "character". If you want to see how foreigners "interpreted" Polish architecture just take a look at the palace of science and culture (Warsaw) when it comes to the "modern" approach of the old or the cloth hall (Krakow) for the old-town style. Both were created with the purpose to LOOK specifically Polish or rather to reflect its architecture (in the case of the palace - as a gift to the Polish people from Stalin). The buildings you can find in the USA (built by Polish-Americans) are also helpful in this regard. Say, St. Stanislaus Church in milwaukee. For most people it looks German/English or even French.

    • @blinkblinkRNB
      @blinkblinkRNB 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, German Migration (to the East) has a long history in Europe. The patterns are significant. From Wikipedia ("Baltic Germans") -->
      "At first the majority of German settlers lived in small cities and military castles. Their elite formed the Baltic nobility, acquiring large rural estates and comprising the social, commercial, political and cultural elite of Livonia for several centuries."
      I guess this is also why Polish and e.g. Lithuanian cities look very similar to each other (although Polish culture was very dominant during the Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth, so there is that).
      "Polish culture began influencing that of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania around the time of the Union of Lublin, and during the time of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, (1569-1795) much of the Lithuanian nobility was Polonized and joined the Polish-Lithuanian szlachta class."
