      Naah. It's a nice set up and convenient, but being locked into ZWO products (even though they're good) doesn't sound appealing. I'll stick with my NUC and SGP or NINA.

    I had been holding out on the ASIAir to wait for it to mature - and I think third time's the charm, as far as I can tell! I am impressed with how streamlined an experience it provides out of the box! It's now permanently on my smaller setup.... Until another manufacturer convinces me to buy a non-ZWO camera :-) But in the meantime, I'm planning several tutorials (framing, live stack, etc.) to post on my channel!

    After about a month of trying to get NINA and PHD2 to work on my laptop, I switched to the ASIair Pro. As a beginner, I don't think I would have persuded astrophotography as a hobby if it wasn't for the ASIair. It makes everything so easy and enjoyable.

    I think it really helps to use the ASIAIR app on a tablet rather than a phone. The app is well optimized to small screens but having slightly bigger screen space for messing with things helps. I'm using a Samsung s6 tablet and it runs smooth as butter.

    I am trying to watch as many videos as possible to get a crash course on the ASI Air Plus. I just got mine delivered this week, along with the EAF and will be putting it all together on the William Optics Z61, along with my new SWSA GTi mount. I watched your video on the ASI294MC Pro (which is what I have). When you gave it such a great review and said you used an UV/IR cut filter to get that beautiful photo of the Veil nebula, I purchased a filter for mine. Now I have no excuse not to go for it. Thanks for sharing everything, I am so inspired.

    ASIair pro user and even with the WiFi issues it's a game changer. One thing that wasn't mentioned which is really powerful,is the ability to schedule multiple targets over the night. So set up the targets, and go to bed. Good to see the updates have sorted the WiFi though. Will be upgrading.

    Great overview Trevor. I must say.. I have been using the AAP for about a year now and it is absolutely perfect for me. Being in the uk.. Weather is always an issue. My rig is set up amd ready to go near my garden door and the i can get uo and running in minutes with AAP routine. It works seamlessly with the EAF and Autoguider. Completely get what you mean regarding beginners.. I must admit the AAP has made my imaging sessions so simple now i could never look back.

    Glad you are revisiting the ASIAir. I tried a laptop but never took to looking at a PC while stargazing. I love the simplicity of DSLR/wide field scope and no guiding. But I wanted to start guiding and the ASIAir was the answer. Like you, I liked that gentle glow of the hand controller, but the ASIAir not only eliminated that, it introduced me to plate solving, no need for star alignment, and a bunch of possibilities. I used the unit for visual last night by designating the guide scope (120mini/50mm) as Main Camera and replacing my DSLR with a star diagonal and eyepiece. The polar alignment, plate solving, goto functions worked great.

  • @Rob_1472
    @Rob_1472 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This helped me immensely having taken up the hobby last year. Works great on my EQ6-R pro but when you start to switch up to e.g. the mount you have in the dome or 10 micron that require modelling for those that want unguided… maybe a mini pc or eagle might be the route for full control. Having said that because you can connect to the 10 micron, you could run a 3 star alignment and refine stars via virtual hand controller and using the asiair platesolve feature. Takes a while but doable

  • @MCCRITTERS
    @MCCRITTERS 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I know this is about 2 years old, but I finally broke down to try and simplify my setup recently. I have been using a Software Bisque MYT mount with the sky software AP130mm scope and I was pretty comfortable with it, but I didn't have a dedicated observatory, so setting up and taking down was starting to become a chore on my old bones. LOL I moved to an Aptura 75q with a AM5 mount asi122mm guider and ASI 1600mm camera with 5X2 filter wheel. The asiair + device makes everything from Polar alignment , focusing, finding objects , guiding and capture a breeze! I know its not for everyone, but for me I find myself able carry my scope and tripod out on my viewing spot and ready to image in 15 minutes!!!!

    Trevor, where have you been you are old school. Been using an ASIAir Pro for about a year, totally made my life photographing targets a breeze. From polar alignment, plate solving, guiding, focusing, capturing images, dark frames, dew heaters, etc. Leave the laptop at home as this will do a better job with an intuitive work flow. I use a amazon fire tablet which can run all night. I will recommend if using a battery, get a big one as the ASI with all the work it is doing, it uses a lot of power. But it!

    I can honestly say that apart from guiding in general; the ASIAIR is the single most profoundly useful purchase I've ever made in astronomy. Setups that used to take an hour or more, now take five minutes. Things that 50% of the time used to work 30% of the time, now work 100% of the time right away, robustly, and without fail. Since getting my AIR, I've discarded precisely ZERO subs due to derpy guiding. I used to throw away easily 20-30% in a given night. I'm absolutely in awe of this piece of kit. Doing without it seems genuinely prehistoric now.

I entered the astrophotography hobby just as the ASIAir Pro came out and managed to snag one during the beginning months of the pandemic. The Wi-Fi connection was horrible and frustrating but I purchased a Vonet’s wifi extender and that has solved the majority of my issues. Trevor, this is a great review. I've touched upon the original ASIAIR a bit and it's great that they're making continuous improvements from one generation to the next. I'm relatively new astrophotography compared to some of you guys (only a year in), and I too prefer the "OG" method of lugging out a laptop out there. However, because I don't own much ZWO products, then the ASIAIR, regardless of how they improve upon it, would be useless to me. I still prefer the freedom of using whatever I want with my MINI-PC / Laptop. Great review nonetheless!

  • @ntaylorblanchard
    @ntaylorblanchard 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Only major drawback I see is that you need to use ZWO cameras, auto-focusers and filter wheels. Not a problem if you are building from the ground up as ZWO makes great products, but if you already have a setup with, say, a different imaging camera, guide camera and/or focuser, switching to ASIAIR plus means having to invest in other new equipment. This could push the price of the switch to several times the base price of the ASIAIR plus

    I am thinking of becoming a Astro Photography, I have been looking at the Astro plus. But you and some other people are using phones 📱, it is to small for me to read, and I have Heard that there has been some problems with using iPad with this device.
    I'm going to be using a DSR Nikon camera at the moment, With a go to mount ,
    Hopefully next year I will buying a triplet telescope with a EQ Six.
    So the question is will the iPad work or can I use a some type of MacBook or a Mac computer or an iPad as my iPhone is too small to read properly as I am old git.

  • @captbuscemi

    I tried the ASIAir Pro about a year ago, very very impressed and I almost changed away from my laptop, but what held me back was the god-awful ASI EAF, the only autofocus module which works with the ASIAir. I found the EAF to be well short of the focus performance needed for imaging with an F4 Newt, and I switched to the far-superior Moonlite focus system, which immediately solved all focus issues. I understand ASIAir is built to support other ASI products - it's totally the prerogative of ZWO to run it that way - but in the case of the EAF, it desperately needs some competition to make it a better product.

    Wonderful video. I am a asiair pro user. Keep thinking I'll go back to laptop and other programs. But the asiair is just so easy. Would love to see you take your fits. From the one shot color camera and see your stacking and processing. Step by step. For those of us that have trouble getting as good a quality photos as I did with sharpcap and SGP.

    I’m using the ASI Air Pro with an Orion Atlas Pro mount, Orion 110 Eon refractor and ASI 2600 MC Pro. Have a small guide scope (120 mm FL) with a ASI 290MM mini. Everything works really well. This is my first system and I am pleased with it. I have bought a wifi extender but haven’t used it yet (maybe in the winter when it is cold out). My only question is how the ASI Air Pro will hold up in our Canadian winter. Manual says operating temp is 0 to 40 oC. It is a lot colder than that here! Dr B from Manitoba

    Thank you. Nice review.
    Other great features not covered:
    - Autofocussing is a blessing with an EAF.
    - LiveStacking is an absolutely great feature to see astro images being created in real time.
    - Video mode for planets.
    I am a happy user of the ASIAIR Pro. I am running the App on an iPad Pro! Works great! I attached a blazingly fast 1TB Samsung T5 SSD on the ASIAIR USB3 port.
    I overcame the WiFi range issue with putting an old 5GHz router next to the scope and using the Ethernet cable from the ASIAIR to the router. The router creates a fast local network with a long range. As far as I see, the WiFi is the main - but very important - change next to the new internal memory between the Pro and Plus version.

    Man the vignetting on that sensor is just huge. I would never handicap my system by using a sensor that larger and waisting that much light with it.

      Now I am curious though if vignetting like that increases your integration times.
      It does bother me though to see OPT claim that the scope will cover a 35mm sensor when clearly it does not. APC looks like it would be a better fit.

    I have been using the ASIAIR Pro with great sucess over the past year and to solve the wifi range I attached a power strip to a tripod legs where everything is powered from and also plugged in a TP-Link wifi extender thats connected to my home network and thats plugged in to the RJ-45 connector on the Pro. Other than the Wifi range upgrade is this new one that much better to replace my old Pro?

    Hi Trevor, Love your videos. In a further demo can you show the ASIAIR Plus use of the Video mode? I have the Pro and cannot fathom how to use that mode. An mp4 gets saved on the phone, but where? It does not say. Does the Plus address how planetary can be done? Like the Moon or Jupiter. Before I dump my PC it would be good to see. I go back to Sharpcap for such images. The other modes are so much more intuitive.

    I realize the ASIAir is a ZWO product, but I still would like to see it support QHY cameras. Some of the comparable cameras between ZWO and QHY come down in QHY's favor, particularly for onboard RAM.

    Trevor, Does this latest version of ASIAIR Pro Plus works with a CEM 40 mount? All the data I found seems to indicate that it does not. Can you elaborate on this. It looks really good, but still, I need to find out if it will work. I am interested in the mount control with the meridian flip, plate solving, and centering the object along with the PHD2 guiding and dithering. BTW, can this box interface with a Windows laptop?

    Another great video! Quick question though, I don't need to plug anything into my dslr do I for autoguiding? It's just the guide camera that gets plugged in isn't it? My dslr is a second hand canon 1000d so would I be able to use that as my main imaging camera with this asiair set up?

  • @capturethephotons2078

    I actually have been only tracking/ shooting lucky imaging style (no guiding) with 2 min exposures at most w/ dslr (one modded stock)on a triplet refractor/Eq6-r and a star adventurer with lenses up until now with good results. I have owned an asi120mm guide camera with matching g. scope for awhile/ haven't enough time to dive into laptop controlled sessions with guiding due to work, clear nights etc... I just bought the asi air plus to start becoming more streamlined and actually guide along with tracking.
    I think i have enough knowledge to move from a dslr right to a cooled monochrome sensor and filter wheel for false color pallet imaging. The asi air plus I feel will bring my technique together to finally running with the big Dawgs!!!! Clear skies/screw light pollution it getting way worse 😂

    Hi there, another great video. I was wondering if you could advise me on why when using Autorun that my ZWO585MC only seems to take black and white images as when I take test shots in 'Preview' it saves the images to my phone in colour. As such it seems that the camera seems to be operating fine, but I hope that my settings in the ASIAIR Plus are off when in Autorun. I hope you can advise? All the best, Dougie

    We all already know that this system works very well with short focal distance setup. But how will this work with medium and and long focal distance? It's a shame that ZWO released version 2 even knew about the short range problem (which didn't happen in version 1) Now want us to spend 350€ for their failure. Thank you for the great video. :-)

    I envisaged these for my setup, but being dependent of a phone app (and its compatibility and maintenance) for being able to operate the whole thing is putting me off a bit. Surely the laptop/mini-pc way is harder, but hell, desktop OS's are not going away any soon, cannot say the same for android & iOS.

      I've had the pro for about a year now and love it. I actually don't see a need to upgrade to the plus myself. The biggest improvement the Plus has over the Pro is the external antenna to boost WIFI. I actually just have a Net Gear WIFI range extender plugged into the ethernet port on my ASI Air pro. And I can access my imaging setup almost anywhere on my property. One thing I have discovered though. Is that the ASI app tends to work best on IOS rather than Android.

    I have watched several videos from various users of this device but I am still confused about the cabling. If I have the ASI Air Plus USB connected to the hand controller of my mount do I still need the cable from the guide scope to mount? The documentation on connections for this thing are weak!
