The lyrics behind it is pretty deep and hard to understand for anyone who don’t know much about Taiwan’s history so please allow me to try my best to explain it :) The name of the song Takao is a place in Taiwan where it was the biggest harbor when Taiwan was the colony of Japan which is heavily used for war during ww2. The story is about a Taiwanese natives joined the Japanese military and preparing to leave his motherland for war. The meaning behind the song is that, when Japan colonized Taiwan, Japan tried their best to make taiwan just like Japan and all Taiwanese people will be Japanese especially when ww2 started. Japan banned all the traditions and religions of Taiwanese natives including facial tattoos which you saw in the video, because they thought it was “barbaric”. It costs the new generation of Taiwanese who was forbidden from their traditional such as face tattoo which is the initiation ceremony of many natives. So they can’t become the real man yet the Japanese still don’t accepted them cause they still thinks they are barbarian. So they joins the war and fought for a country which don’t care about them, hoping to be accepted and become the man they wants to be.Most of them never return,or even worse, returned home just to be executed few years later because the new Chinese dictatorship government thinks they are Japan royalists. So it’s basically about Taiwanese people’s history of struggling to survive and don’t forget who they are. I hope it more or less help you enjoy this song more cause it was truly amazing and so does this band’s other songs, this band is without a doubt a god damn legend 👌 If you’re interested I recommend you take a look at “Supreme pain for the tyrant” or “Rage of my sword” they are my favorite haha
Man this might be a tad late but is there any meaning to all the cuts that are featured? Like the cherry flowers slicing away at the skin or the video featuring the soldiers having that slash on their foreheads, even the cover I believe has the takasago holding the knife on his bleeding forehead.
@@Mancom37 Don’t worry,it’s never too late my friend! The cut from cherry blossom represents the pain and suffer caused by the Japanese empire, even long after the war is over. And here’s the reasons why the bleeding forehead. First many Taiwanese aboriginal tattoos on their forehead in their coming-of-age ceremony, which got banned by the Japanese. Another reason is that both Japanese and later Nationalist army both have their symbols on their forehead in their uniform,so Taiwanese people lost their identity because their own symbol got replaced with others.

@@Joseph_yy Ahahah I am an history student too and well of course it was described as a place with beautiful hills and forests. We even made a special coin related to it's discovery (imgur.com/a/Awv5PJC). Well the question I guess will touch into that harsh topic an it is the relationship with mainland China. I have briefly studied and understood that China controlled a lot of foreign powers as tributary states, from what I have seen most of the societal formations in Taiwan were mostly tribal so was there ever any attempt by the Ming or Qing to estabilish a tributary there? What were the relations between the tribes? What were their main sources of food and what style of religion did they practise?
Taiwan (a.k.a., Formosa), an island neighboring what is now known as China (PRC), was annexed by the Qing Empire about 3 hundred years ago. Then Qing lost a war as well as this island to Japan, and consequently Taiwan became a colony of Japan. Later, revolution happen in Qing, making this empire become the “Republic of China.” 30 years later, China and Japan fought on opposite sides in WWII, which ended in the defeated and surrender of the axis alliance: Japan, Germany, and Italy. The Allied powers temporarily occupied various regions of the defeated countries around the world in order to stabilize the situation. Such occupation, as a matter of course, does not mean possession. China was in charge of occupying the Asian regions, including Taiwan.
At that time, China was also dealing with its own civil war: i.e., the KMT (Chinese Nationalist Party) vs. the Communist Party. The civil war ended with the victory of the Communists, who built the China today: People’s Republic of China, while the older regime-Republic of China-was exiled and fled to the island of Taiwan, which it had been occupying. Thereafter, ROC has never left this island and has relied on all sorts of resources of Taiwan for its own survival.
But the truth is, even though Taiwan was no longer Japan’s colony after WWII, this does not justify the claim of China (be it Republic of China or People’s Republic of China) that Taiwan should become part of Chinese territory, because military occupation is totally different from territorial possession and does not legitimize the latter. Still, ROC has lived Taiwan, used Taiwan’s resources to rule Taiwan’s peoples, and democratized its own government up to the present day. Ever since its arrival, this ROC regime has never renamed itself as “Taiwan.” On the contrary, it has kept insisting itself as the legitimate government of “China,” kept fighting and struggling against the Communist China, and kept crushing all independence movements initiated by Taiwanese people.
And this, in short, is exactly the reason why Taiwan, pathetically, is still under the name of “Republic of China,” still misusing the R.O.Chinese flag as its “national flag,” and still considered a part of the China civil war. This is also why we cannot participate in any international affair or become a member of any international organization or become acknowledge as a state, although this island is de facto independent. Vatican, for example, is one of the few countries which still has a diplomatic relation with Taiwan; but what Vatican really acknowledges is the Republic of China-as the sole and legitimate representative government of China-instead of Taiwan. Such Vatican-ROC diplomatic relation has nothing to do with Taiwan as a sovereign state.
Taiwan, however, is supposed to be and deserves to be a sovereign state of its own. It is not Republic of China, the old China regime. This is why we need Taiwan independence movements, and this is why we should build an independent sovereign state-a state that truly and entirely belongs to the people of Taiwan, that functions normally and builds diplomatic relations with other countries in the world, and that is no longer confused with any China or any Chinese regime. Taiwan, a colony up to now, deserves its own state.
