Thanks for your video. In A/B testing on my Sennheiser HD600, the clarity of attack and breath of each note on each stop across the sonic spectrum highlight the effortless strength of the DPAs. Nonetheless, your video also is the reason I’ll be settling on the Oktava MK 012s until I can afford the DPAs further along in life. I’m surprised by how many commenters here think the Oktava sounds better, but I suppose that is a testament to how close the two compare.
I’ve never been so satisfied to say, “good enough!”

Beautiful instrument, every bit as successful as the one at Brompton Oratory !

Hi, thanks for this great comparation. This organ sounds so wonderfull. In my case I prefer the oktava. More detailed on mid high and so better with the bass. The dpa seem not to handle the very low's and to saturate the sond a little.
Hp = hd6 mix + bose in ear.
Thanks again, I am going to listen all your videos !

Thanks! I'm sure that if every bit of the recording chain was upgraded to the level of the DPAs you'd hear more of a difference, but the Oktavas do an excellent job for the price.

Um, the DPAs have more of a capacity in the bass, although the octavas are pretty amazing when compaired.

Thank-you for a wonderful comparison! I see the strengths of both; and it's very similar to a Schoeps / Neumann comparison elsewhere. Basically, the cheaper mic (Oktava or Neumann) sounds terrific while the more expensive is more faithful, and would allow further colouring. The Oktava here comes across as "pre-warmed" which in most circumstances would be welcome. But some material doesn't want to be warm. It wants to be cool and hard. Listen to the emotion of the recordings, and I think you'll agree.

DPA is more clear and transparent, of course, in any situation. For the pipe organ, is particularly indicated. I would suggest you to use them with a Millennia preamp and a high quality A/D converter, such as Benchmark ADC1 or Apogee Rosetta.

I’m amazed the Oktavas sound so good! I was thinking of saving up for a set of DPAs in the distant future, but they only make sense of you have the corresponding high-end hardware to make the best of them, in which case they’re unbeatable. But for the money, and on a simple set up with your MBP, there’s not much in it between them. Then again, I’d have loved to have heard the difference on an organ with true, full length 32’ stops. I have a feeling the DPAs would have blown the Oktavas away!

Yes, absolutely you need the corresponding gear for the DPAs, though even here the higher frequencies are more precisely detailed and there's less 'noise' in general. It's only the bottom 4 notes of the 32' that are outside the stated frequency range of the Oktavas - would be an interesting comparison for another time.

Love this video! I have just bought the Oktava MK012 with omni capsules since I`m recording a church organ myself. Do these clips have any post processing at all? I think both microphones sound great, and if my Oktavas sound anything remotely close to this, I will be very happy with my purchase!

Thanks. Nothing fancy - a Tascam US-4x4, recording with my MBP.

I am surprised at how well the Octava competes at around 400$ the pair, vs the 4006 at 2300$ each, lol. Still, i like the AKG ULS 62 omnis, as i used them for yrs. The schoeps, of course, are wonderful too.

The DPA's are cleaner...more real, there is more colouration in the Octavas though they represent exceptionally good value.
