- We originally planned to fly home for Christmas in mid December 2023, but Carmela’s father asked her to be home by November 23, for the US “Thanksgiving Day” holiday, so we are on a mission to get our winter marina in Tunisia on a shorter timeline.
This episode begins on November 7, 2023 with an overnight passage from east to west rounding the southern Peloponnesus Peninsula, from Monemvasia (on the Aegean Sea) to Pylos (on the Ionian Sea). We even spot a shooting star in the night sky. On November 9th, we leave Pylos and begin our passage west across the Ionian Sea (to Tunisia via Sicily). We start by motor-sailing to make-up time. As a reminder, our passage was delayed by a week on the eastern side of the peninsula because of high winds. Unfortunately, only two hours after leaving Pylos, the engine diesel bug struck again and our motor quit. We returned to the coast to find a protected anchorage where we could polish/clean the fuel in steady seas. This newest delay affected our weather window for a safe 3-day passage directly west to Sicily, because we were aware that unfavorable strong winds were expected on Ionian Sea on days 4, 5 and 6. This second delay made it necessary to consider a Plan B route to cross the Ionian Sea. On our Plan B route to Tunisia, we encountered a storm, which we expected, but it was much stronger than forecasted and in the opposite direction than it was forecasted, which made for a very interesting passage on the Strait of Zakynthos. We are very glad that we completed the fuel polishing the previous night and that our engine was in top shape for that storm. Follow along with us as we continue our passage to Tunisia on our Plan B route. 😊 Thanks for watching! Mark and Carmela

You passed right by me on the Eastern coast of the Bay of Messini, above Aeropoli.
Nice video guys, I was in the ionian this summer 2024, and I plan to coast Peloponnesus in spring-summer 2025 to go to Crete and the Aegean. I am spending the winter in Manfredonia, South Adriatic, a Place I recommend. Fair winds
@maurizioferrario1949 whatever you do, sail from East to West to Crete NORTH coast. South coast has no Anchorage and gets south strong winds.
Thank you, Mauricio! Your plan to sail from the Peloponnesus to Crete sounds wonderful! Our friends loved Crete! We hope you have a wonderful winter in Italy. We hope to see more of Italy in 2025. Thanks for the recommendation.
By the sound of it you either need a new stainless steel fuel tank (galvanised would do) or clear the tank completely from fuel, clean, insert diesel cleaner and start again. Expensive but could be done in Tunisia.
Thanks Tom, we’ve not had any problems since this time. We now stay ahead of the bug with biocide and fuel polishing/filter changes.
Music makes it too difficult to watch.
