They use avatars created with programs such as Live2D, portraying characters designed by online artists. VTubers are not bound by physical limitations, and many of them engage in activities that are unconstrained by their real-world identity.
- Some VTubers, particularly those from marginalized communities, choose to use avatars to reflect their online identity for personal comfort and safety reasons. Transgender VTubers may use their avatars as a means to better reflect their preferred presentation to their audience.
- By 2020, there were more than 10,000 active VTubers. Although the term is an allusion to the video platform TH-cam, they also use websites such as Niconico, Twitch, Facebook, Twitter and Bilibili.

It is too incredible. Hololive only took half-year (2020/05~2020/11) to occupy most of the top 20 vtubers ranking. After that, they built a high wall to let others be hard to surpass them.
I won't deny that they would've made it anyway, but Covid lockdowns and isolations helped with how quick it went.
I love how all the Hololive crew appear right on the beat drop to dominate everything. And how Gura beats Kizuna to 3 mill.
She also beat out all her senpai to 1 million. Hololive explosion spearheaded by a smol shork.

I find it funny how Nux is in this list, even tho he wasn't even what we'd consider a vtuber in his beginnings. I wonder tho: is he really the only MALE vtuber who has enough subs to reach top 20? How does he compare to every other male vtuber out there? Is he number 1? Could be something to look into for another video.

Just as a side note: When Coco debuted in late December of 2019, there was only 2 Holomems on the chart, very low. Within 6 months that number grew to 7. In one year, 13. At the time of her graduation, 16 out of the top 20 most popular vtubers in the world belonged to Hololive.

Nux Taku gets to be that one guy in the list, like the guy in a harem anime.
Nux is also one of the few without a big company backing them so it's nice to see him rolling into third on growth without that kind of backing (No slight to the girls, they work their asses off for their content)

If you look at the content that ALL the girls did when Coco was there, they were all being a bit more risque.
All of Gen 4 was totally in on Coco's marketing exploits. She maximized something she understands very well which is shitposting.
When they hired the EN girls botrh gura and Ame who have both been around a very long time as streamers and are both shit-posting meme lords just went off with that. I wish someone had done some of the memer eview stuff but no one continued it for some reason
Seeing Kizuna Ai and Nux here doesn't surprise me. Nyanners however, does. Love or hate her, you gotta give her credit for making it to where she is now.
I'm not a Twitch person, so I haven't kept up with her vtuber activities much, but I was a huge fan of her old shitposts on TH-cam from before vtubers were around. Glad she has gone on to do bigger things.
nyanners channel is extremely old, (10+ years ) even though she wasnt a vtuber all that time, she posted, using her ability to make her voice sound like a young one to make weird content that pleases 4channers on the anime board. (bad people never go there please) Nyan literally had made what was basically considered the "loli anthem" (now deleted, thank god) for these users. nyanners would later grow out of this atrocious community, by the way nyan acted, it seemed that that community started to grow hatred towards her, eventually escalating up to finding her real life home, vandalizing something very dear to her family. (wont go into too much details, to respect nyan) later, she would do these song covers, still here on her channel. and the rest is history. (some other content, and then becomes a vtuber) this is why she already had an audience (obviously, some people decided to stick with her, not everyone sends degratory mails to random people on the internet, making her videos grow in popuarity) when starting the vtubing.

Yeah, Wolfychu is easy to miss she has a relatively small following on Twitch where she streams.
She does kind of the same thing Nux Taku does. Stream on Twitch and post highlights on her 2nd channel to separate those videos from her big projects on her main channel.
This is interesting, because from what i’ve seen, Wolfychu had been on 1st place before. Just a little spoiler.

I only partially agree. I have known his channel for 5 years and the vast majority if not the entirety of last year was as a VTuber. Not gonna claim that his career is only 5 years but from what I know of him he has a decent time invested in being one.
@@Jonathan1002887 Yeah, but there's a difference between debuting as a vtuber and working your way up in that field versus getting over a million subs doing other stuff first and only then deciding to become one. Otherwise any big gaming channel could put on a live2d model someday and declare themselves the top vtuber. Even if he does qualify for this nowadays, he at the very least shouldn't be on the chart from before he went into vtubing.

Edit: I see your point in your edit but then he'd just miraculous appear as opposed to seeing the effects on his career. Now no one is stopping you, or anyone, from making a similarly done video and researches Nux Taku's career history to do the math and make adjustments.
What I will say is this list is cool to see however there are alot of big names such as Wolfychu who as of rn in Jan is sitting at 3.29m. so keep that in mind
