  • Join me as I show you Sava Square that features one of the tallest statues in Belgrade, Serbia (Monument to Stefan Nemanja). It's a spectacular site to see. Also, there's a mysterious building behind it which I think is the old train station. Check it out!

The 1884 building was the old Main Railway Station, for 134 years. It is pretty outside, but not yet inside. One day the Historical Museum of Serbia will move into it. They still have to do the interior.

Until then it is used by junkies, homeless, migrants... They were supposed to renovate the interior years ago... They haven't even started.

To make a long story short: The monument (statue) of Stefan Nemanja represents the symbolism of the 'birth' (creation) of an organized, medieval Serbian state in the 13th century. The base of the statue is an embryo, a symbol of birth, a symbol of the beginning. The inside of the embryo is covered with drawings, which visually and chronologically explain the organization of the Serbian state. Then, Stefan Nemanja - the founder of the dynasty and the state (his youngest son, Prince Rastko, is the founder of the autonomous Serbian Orthodox archbishopric, today he is celebrated as Saint Sava), with the title: great prefect of Serbian land and sea. Todays' schoolars are in different views and opinions in order to interpret Stefan Nemanja's seal and what is written on it. He wears clothes of dignity(at least should be, not sure) typical of that period, as a sign of high recognition by the Roman (Byzantine) Empire, high insignia of honor, equal to the publicans/servastocrators. Logically, given the political dominance and cultural influence of the Eastern Roman (Roman, so-called Byzantine) empire at the time. In his hand he holds a sword, the symbol of the state, and there is a cross, a symbol of faith. Typical for that time, in which the crown and religion are the two pillars of the state.

Stefan Nemanja was the founder of the Nemanjic dynasty that reigned Serbia for 205 years. This dynasty gave Serbia 10 rulers - 1 grand prince, 7 kings, and 2 tzars. They built many medieval churches and monasteries, of which some are part of the UNESCO world Heritage. The cracked "egg" symbolizes a cracked Byzantine helmet, because Serbia gained independence from Byzantine Empire. During the Nemanjic reign, Serbia gained independence from the Byzantine (Eastern Roman) Empire in 1091. In 1217 the Grand Principality of Serbia was elevated into the Kingdom of Serbia. In 1219, the autonomy of the Serbian Orthodox Church was proclaimed and lasts to this day. In 1346, Serbia became an Empire. It ended in 1371, and then the gradual degradation of the Serbian medieval state had begun. It would last until 1459. When Smederevo fell to the Ottoman Turks, that was the end of the medieval Serbian state.

The construction behind old train station buildings wasn't destroyed in 99' bombing, it was old railways and that's now all gone so they are building Belgrade Waterfront and reconstruct old Savamala part of town near Sava river coast. Savamala means Sava-quarter from arabic(turkish) mahallah shortly domestic called "malla".

yeah thet was the old train station and it smells inside cuz migrants keep breaking in, sadly it was renoveted complitly recently just for the migrants to do grafiti on it,burn stuff inside and do other bad things. As for other buildings around this monument they shoud all be renoveted, the one in 9:36 is already being torn down to be build in the old Serbian style building like it used to look in the past before the comunists destroyed it to look less Serbian, the building will be a musium i think ether way it will look great as you see on the poster 9:36

The train locomotive is a part of Tito's Blue Train. The year is 1943. That would make sense, right?

You are totally uninformed... In the age of the internet, you could easily research all your questions. It amazes me how you travel around and have no clue at what you are seeing.
