Nice video.. I love 0AD. It's a modder's dream. It's also way more historically accurate than AoE ever was. It's fully 3D. It's totally free with no catch whatsoever. It's cross-platform (windows/mac/linux). It's totally opensource, so anyone can contribute (programmers/modellers/artists) in whichever way they like. And the best part is it keeps getting better with every new stable release, every 6 months or so. Definitely give it a try if you haven't yet.
And gameplay is better you don't have catapults that can wipe out dozens of units, you don't have stupid monk conversion, you can finnaly put units ON walls, and there is more to battle tactics and raids. And game is way more unpredictable.
I'd say 0 AD is better, even though I do like the Age of Empire series. 0 AD has more features and is way more realistic. Soldiers can work and fight which is realistic since back then, they'd have farmers fight as militia besides the well trained units of the King, Emperor or lords or nobles. Plus women did gather food, took care of family, and some ran their own businesses like taverns to make a living for themselves and their families while some of the men stayed back to protect the women which makes total sense. Further more, what AoM (Age of Mythology) did not have was the Roman faction. I am glad 0 AD does and it's free too.
Anyone else like Stronghold crusaders? I like the features in that like how you can place archers on your walls and also rotate buildings (building defensive walls is so much easier and better tbh. Also placing units inside buildings is much much easier)
0 AD all the way. I love Age of Empires, I grew up with the series, I still play the three games all the time, but 0AD is a labour of love with an amazing community and potential. And the modding is great as well. Once I discovered it, I haven't stopped playing since. Its a very underrated gem. Of course, it is rough around the edges considering its completely free.
i feel like the biggest problem i had with 0ad is that the gameplay just doesnt feel special to me atleast in the way that aoe 2 did. My biggest gripe with it is the fact its engine looks really good but doesnt take advantage of the possibilities of gameplay that could be implemented. one thing id really like to see is armies/ groups of soldiers smashing into one another as well as giving projectiles a feeling of greater impact like in a total war game but on a smaller age of empires scale. I do however realise that its open source and developed mostly by volunteers so large asset updates are fairly slow in comparison to a game thats funded by a publisher etc.
Exactly thts wat in my mind too, i couldnt felt the impact of damage, for ex.. in stronghold crusader 2 theres little blood shatter when units fight, u can see the arros pierce effects .. tiny details make the game complete..in aoe 3, the tracer effects, blood fx are awesome, but here 0ad its just toy fighting.. no attack, damage feel
Grandfather of real-time strategy would really be either Command & Conquer or Dune II. In either case, it is NOT Age of Empires. It's like saying the godfather of soul is Usher rather than James Brown, or that the king of rock n roll is Shakin' Stevens.
0 AD is extremely difficult to me. Like 10 minutes and POW the AI has a full army on you an you have like a score of units to stop (which is not enough) my biggest gripe about the game is that you cannot turtle. That is my preferred style of combat but the mechanics in the game make it impossible. Its rush or nothing and I think that limits the gameplay immensely
I haven't had that issue, I due a semi turtle strat usually, and it works great, especially early game since non-siege units struggle against stome walls. I will say this though, turtling in 0AD is not lile turtling in other games due to territory boundaries and cost to build walls. I call it a semi turtle because it requires your citizen soldiers to fight in open battles potentially, though normally only once if the AI hits you in under 12 minutes.
I suggest very easy ai and there are guidea on TH-cam on how to win your first game. Also lower game speed until you are used to the game and manage economy well/ build defences/ garrisson your buildings
First of all you havent talked about of AoE variety, superb balance with over 30 factions and soundtrack. You just blandly talked that AoE is old and this one is a new. 0AD is similar to AoE but you just havent told anything...
Mantas Rokas because 0Ad also has that variety of factions. The engines and their age is almost the only thing separating them. I take it you haven’t played 0AD or you would know the factions are the same almost exactly
0:40 I forgot that Age4 is announced in 2017, 4 years ago. Then there goes the DE waves. But what I remembered that those all just happened recently. Omg my timeline is broken.
0AD is definitely fun, but it still has some bugs (no hard crashing, but affecting system settings after quiting, chokes too easily on big maps) and a few AI flaws that need to be worked out (ignoring garrisoned walls, and not using boats) , as well as needing some campaigns or more custom-play maps made. AOE is mainly ahead because it's been around so long, and has the bugs worked out and extra content available. However it looks like progress is still happening with 0AD, so in terms of being as good or better?... It's getting there.
Game was okay, but it's stupid to know that instead of destroying things, your units are wololo along the way to convert enemy structure and siege units into gaia. In AoE, siege units are fragile and needs your soldiers to protect it, that takes strategy other than the animation and sounds of the siege units is extremely pleasing to the ear, the collapse of structures and the effect is extremely satisfying to watch.. that motivate us to play the game in the first place, 0 ad lack of that and bugged a lot! The building design is beautiful, the arrows are good, but that's just it..
Once I unlock seige units in 0AD, the game's basically over. Those things are OP. And the other gripe I have is that the resource management seems off. I always end up with a crazy surplus of food (with not even that many farms) and somewhat less robust stores of stone and especially wood.
Harry Stoddard maybe because u dont know how to play lol. U cant judge without knowledge. If u want to destroy u must prese ctrl too..if not u have the possibility to convert.
Although I quite love the presentation, it might be too technical for people who just want to know the differences of how this game is played (the things presented in the previous video). Anyway, making the discussion revolve around Open Source vs. Proprietary and the Difference in Fanbase marks 0 A.D.'s internal struggle to get promoted.
What do you think about the Cossacks series vs age of empires? I think it evolved from aoe and have very similar basis. What is your opinion about this games?
The Age of Empires Definitive Editions (AOE 1/2/3 and soon AoM) crushes everything that tries to mimic them. That includes 0 a.d. and Age of Empire IV (what the hell was Relic thinking ?)
I knew 0.a.d. was the best RTS game on Linux. Didn't realise it had taken that title else where. Another RTS to check out if you want something really different, and weird. But still fun. Check out Globulation 2. The game mechanics, and micro management system are really unique
I was really upset in 2013 when I found the new Windows 8 did not support AOE. 0AD filled the gap until the AOE the Diffinitive Edition came out. Now I play both I think 0AD has better options for organizing and controlling units, but then I also prefer AOE's maps which feel more open and vibrant. I might just be waiting for Age of Mythology to come back :\
I would have liked to hear about how balanced 0 AD is. It looks like it may be as balanced as AOE3, which wasn't very balanced, but that's just my perception
If you want to be introduced to a great RTS game, get Dune 2000. It's better than the movie and is not an overly complicated game. But it's so old, good luck trying to get it to run on your PC. It has outstanding sound tracks and is basically perfectly balanced. If you can't get that game then just get StarCraft the first one. It's free now and will work on modern day Windows and Mac. It too is not an overly complicated RTS and is one of the cooled syfy universes of all time. They have even written chapter books on the game. You can find the game for download at www.blizzard.com Dune 2000 is from Westwood. Westwood online died out long long ago. They also made the great forgotten RTS Tiberiun Sun. A syfy universe just as cool as Halo, worthy of being a movie. Tiberiun Sun Firestorm is the expansion to the game but also super old like Dune 2000 so will be hard to run. What I think they need to have is another Star Wars RTS. They had one called Galactic Battle Grounds and then later came out with an expansion called Clone Campaigns. The game is EXACTLY like Age of Empires III the appearance and everything, even the building of the monument to win quickly. I think it may be more sophisticated than Age of Empires III. So in conclusion, I recommend Dune 2000 first because of its amazing music, gameplay, game balance and just everything about that game. Taking 8 and 16 bit to the ultimate max. Tiberiun Sun and StarCraft are both syfy universes and it's your preference of syfy you want to delve into. Both games are great. The buildings in Star Wars Galactic Battle Grounds are the most realistically strong I have ever seen in an RTS. If you have even dozens of rebel soldiers shooting at fortress it doesn't matter; it will take forever before you take it down. You basically need specific units like pummels to take buildings down in decent amount of time. Try these games and I'm sure you'll take very great satisfaction in at least one of them.
For a new player of RTS games, which game from the AOE games would you recommend to start of with? Other similar game suggestions would also be highly appreciated:)
AoE 2 + Conquerors original on Voobly, or if you don't have it anymore, AoE 2 HD + the Wololo Kingdoms mod on Voobly. If you only play with friends with good ping using the original version, GameRanger is fine too. AoE 2 HD on Steam feels a little sluggish and lags more than any of the others, but it is still fun.
@Resonant have you checked out an RTS/MMO called Ymir? There s not much gameplay out about it but they seem to be handing out keys to some content makers. Would be cool to see what you think of it :)
0ad looks good from afar, but they are major issues. Worker soldiers seem a bit annoying, but thats a minor issue. Also the animations are not the best. But ok. The main problem is the performance, even in the video I can see the stuttering that gives me nausea. From what I heard that the game started developing in like 2003 when computers and software technology were weaker and it was adapted to those systems and tools, so apparently the core of the game is still based on things like single threading which makes many newer processors struggle.
Age of Empires II, playable through the Voobly, has complete building, tech tree, unit, and map changing mods such as Age of Chivalry and Age of Galactica. People have built free-to-use modding tools for the AoE II base game.
Marko Kos They didn't have bloom, soft alphas or textures above 512x512 for RTS games in 2001. Warzone 2100 is an example of what a 3D RTS game looked like back in 2001.
I said it was coming, so here it is
Resonant wow one dislike 11 mins in
Pathetic.
OAD look a lot like Age of Mythology.
I prefer 0ad... I just wish they would fix the lag issues with the turn calculations.
Nice video.. I love 0AD. It's a modder's dream. It's also way more historically accurate than AoE ever was. It's fully 3D. It's totally free with no catch whatsoever. couldnt agree more!
sounds amazing
And gameplay is better you don't have catapults that can wipe out dozens of units, you don't have stupid monk conversion, you can finnaly put units ON walls, and there is more to battle tactics and raids. And game is way more unpredictable.
Truly a work of love
who knows, maybe 0 A D can be the next AoE for the newer kids, though I find it highly unlikely cuz AoE has had a solid reputation
I'd say 0 AD is better, even though I do like the Age of Empire series. 0 AD has more features and is way more realistic. Same boat

Its a very underrated gem. Of course, it is rough around the edges considering its completely free.
There is also a great potential for mods in 0AD You should look up Hyrule Conquest for 0 AD.
i feel like the biggest problem i had with 0ad is that the gameplay just doesnt feel special to me atleast in the way that aoe 2 did. Now AoE DE still broken.

Wololoooo
Monk, I need a monk!!!!
This comment made me green.
That moment when a youtuber doesnt stretch their video to 10 minutes because they aren’t sellouts
Well 0 A.D. is on linux. And with GPL / CC so it is clearly a winner. Not using anything by microsoft.
0AD looks like Empire Earth, I used to play EE1 and then EE2 till mu brother changed the PC.
Martin morande i still play EE2 sometimes fun game
2 of my faves, glad to see them getting some time. Please do a mod guide for 0ad
Improvement will makes 0ad better than aoe3

+Resonant I just mean you should have covered it in this video if you compare these games
Also you just said that modding in AoE2hd is limted while you havent mentioned anything about amazing mod campaigns and wonderful pvp mod CBA...
Age of Empires 2 isn't ancient it plays in the middle-ages
0:40 I forgot that Age4 is announced in 2017, 4 years ago. Then there goes the DE waves. But what I remembered that those all just happened recently. Omg my timeline is broken.

2021 still playing 0ad ahh memories
What do you think about the Cossacks series vs age of empires? I think it evolved from aoe and have very similar basis. What is your opinion about this games?
People do not understand Monty Python references because they don't watch it. "It's too old". It saddens my heart.
what ?
what ?
What ?

We want a shrubbery!
Yeah one is free other is popular but what about the gameplay differences? Is one easier or less complex than the other?
I got the monty python references btw
👍👍👍👍💪

Not yet implemented.
Any cheat codes for this?
I would have liked to hear about how balanced 0 AD is. It looks like it may be as balanced as AOE3, which wasn't very balanced, but that's just my perception
you should do a new review to 0ad
0 A.D. does it better.
Whole vid on fanbase! You never actually compared the games 🙃

Is callen AoE DE. The other is a fullgame.

OAD still gets support 💗
I played 0AD
Save prince hilbert (again)

No thank you... Medieval era... Yuck...
Oh crap, this thing will burn dozens of hours of mine.
AoE II HD look terrible, i think the original look of AoE II is better
I like 0ad more because it has more detailed designs than age of empires.
Oh... sorry father!!
Why did you unadd on steam with you since 300 subs :(
0AD for sure. AoE is basically a lesser version of 0AD
Disliked, because you used such crap footage of 0 AD in both your videos - liked what you had to say
AGE OF EMPIRES
I must claim the title as first and *SPREAD THE CANCER*
Wow, you actually are...
DADDY MORE! AH
Age of empires will always be the king of games
0AD is a much better game that is constantly being improved. AoE is nostalgic garbage.
that white man and voice of his, are so annoying. dont do that. seriously.
Yet another poor soul who doesn't get the Monty Python reference...
0AD looks like rts game from 2001 ! Im sorry but as much I love rts games , I just hate the graphics and the unit annimations from this game !.
Marko Kos

Still better than AoE III and AoM.
You don't need a graphic card to run, that's the point.
