I thought copy editors and line editors were separate, with the former focussing on the effectiveness of your copy and the latter focussing on spelling, grammar and punctuation. Am I wrong?
I have a question, what if you disagree with the notes from a developmental editor? I know creators should always listen and take criticism, but every once in a while that critique is wrong…. You know what I mean?
Discuss. I an a developmental editor and I always have the open option to discuss my suggestions. Either my client agrees in which case I am able to sell them my suggestions, or they tell me why they are strictly against my suggestions, and sometimes it does make sense too! No good editor will force you to make changes, the decision still remains with you.
I’ve noticed two schools - craft/revise/hire editors and publish work that is similar in quality to trad pub vs crank-out-the-next-potato-chip in the bag. I hope readers and markets notice the difference and are voting with their $.
