Great Post! Thanks for crediting me on both versions, and indeed I brought it to the Trouble Walking project... after recording it with Bonnie . Still LOVE the song.
To me Kiss' version is by far the best. Paul actually sings it like he was part of the story, like a friend of the protagonists, a witness of the situation. I'd put Bonnie Tyler's in 2nd and Ace's in 3rd.
I've been a kiss fan since 1975. I am now 60. Ace has always been my favorite player in kiss. I'd have to say that his version of hide your heart is definitely my favorite. His solo rocks however the guitar work for the Rhythm portion is very heavy
I'd only heard of the kiss version and Ace's version, had no idea all these other artists did versions. I like the song, the chorus is super catchy and fun to listen to. I think kiss did the best version what wins it over for me is Paul's vocals on this track
I wondered why KISS didn't play this on any of the reunion tours where Ace & Paul could have traded verses & it would have been a fun addition to the setlist.
Back in the day, I actually heard Molly Hatchet’s version first. I like how the lead guitar plays the melody. I like the KISS version the best followed by Molly Hatchet. The others are okay. Does anyone else remember the original KISS video for Hide Your Heart? It was banned from tv due to the handguns being fired towards the end. An alternate cut replaced it.
This track has got to be one of the go to’s for me. Great and catchy chorus, great solo from Bruce, and amazing rhythm from Paul. That build up in the rhythm is just great. Amazing vocals too!
Great idea highlighting this songs history. I only knew of the KISS and Ace Frehley versions. KISS version my favorite. Great song, great video. I always loved Hide Your Heart by KISS and considered it another great song that was a secret to KISS fans only. If the mainstream ever heard it it would have taken off and been a huge hit for them.
Great video. Always loved this song. The Kiss version is by far my favorite. I’ve always had a soft spot for HITS in general but this is a definite high point.
Thanks for sharing the story of all of the versions of this song. Bonnie Tyler's album "Hide your heart" /" Notes from America" in 1988 had a lot of songs on it that she put out first but they became hits for others a year or two later. This song was one of them.
Thank you so much for this great video. I turned 22 in 1989 and heard the Kiss version of "Hide Your Heart" a lot, particularly on MTV which had the video in massive daytime rotation. You're right; I *didn't* know there were other versions of this song; that is, until a couple of years ago, when I just happened to come across this information on Wikipedia when I was reading both the Kiss and Desmond Child articles. Like the song "Crazy Crazy Nights" from the previous album *Crazy Nights,* this song is very poppy, so much so that I didn't want to like it at first. Unlike "Crazy Crazy Nights," however, "Hide Your Heart" actually packs a punch *and* is super-catchy. By the time I saw the video for the third time, it was really growing on me. By my 6th time, I was basically singing along to it. The fact that this is a really good song is undeniable. I actually played all 5 versions of the song back when I read about them, beginning with the Bonnie Tyler version. My favorite *is* the Kiss version, followed closely behind by Tyler's. Both are great songs that are well-produced, although not overly so. The other versions are good, but not great. Thanks again for this great, informative video!! As soon as I saw it, I immediately tapped on it!! 🤘🏻🐻🤘🏻
As a fan since the mid 70s I'm constantly impressed with the knowledge you have. I'm not sure how you are able to uncover all the information you share. As always another great video!
Great review, Sean! I’m really glad Ace covered this song. Like “Rock’n’Roll Hell” on Origins V2, it gives the hardcore fans a hint of an alternate reality wherein Ace stayed onboard through the 80’s.
Hi Sean. Like me, you're clearly a big KISS fan. Great video about a great song. I always thought the song should have been a huge hit. It has a great hook, is easily one of the best songs on Hot In The Shade and arguably one of the best songs of the non-makeup era. I miss Eric Carr. Keep up the great content and thanks.
Amazing! I knew of three versions never knew there were 5. I like each version. The Kiss version is the best because it's the most polished. It also helps that the video got a lot of airplay when mtv was actually good. Excellent breakdown of all 5 versions.
You have a great channel. I know most of the Kiss facts but it’s nice to have summaries like this, plus you are a great storyteller. Keep up the great work!
Desmond said in an interview the song was originally called Bite Down Hard when he started working on it after Holly and Paul had started it. He also said when he started working on it, it was specifically for the Bonnie Tyler album but like you said it was also demoed for Crazy Nights.
There were actually quite a few very similar song premises floating around in the mid/late 80s early 90s. Kinda like its you and me against the world baby we're gonna make it against all odds, yadda yadda. Very montage soundtracky.
Hey Sean . I hope you're doing well and staying safe. I love all of your KISS related Videos. And this is a great Song. I had no idea that so many Artists had recorded it. I searched TH-cam to find all the versions you talked about. I definitely agree with you. The KISS version is definitely the best. One of the reasons that I like your Videos so much is because you present each one with Intelligence and fairness. I know you enjoy KISS as much as the rest of us , but you don't sugar - coat any of their Songs or actions. That's what I mean by fair. Ok , I'm done sounding off , thanks for the great Video and stay safe , Dude 🎸
Interesting video about a really cool song! All versions are good in their own way, I think Bonnie has the best vocals, Molly Hatchett has the best solos, Ace is the heaviest version - But KISS probably has the one that is "best" on all fronts.
Hi Sean. My favorite version of the song is definitely the KISS one. I wonder what would have happened if the song was released on Crazy Nights like it was meant to be.
I first heard of Hide Your Heart was after buying KISS's Hot in the Shade album around 1990/91. I had never heard of the other versions until I did some searches on the song to find out more about it. I like Ace's version too except the solo as you mentioned. I just searched on Spotify and found 8 versions, though some later ones could different songs with same title.
Awesome video!! Very informative. KISS and Ace’s versions are my favorites, with Tyler running a close third. You are spot on about Ace’s guitar work, underwhelmed by it. Though, I have to say, I like the rawness of his vocals over the heavily cleaned up vocals of Paul. Trouble Walkin’ is my favorite Ace Frehely album…well, after the original four released their solo albums. Would love to see you critique those four albums. Maybe you have…. I need to look.
I liked both Kiss's version and Ace's version of it. I usually spliced in Ace's solo though because it had more of a feel over Kulick's flash.....IMHO.
Thanks for making me smarter about this song. I only know the version of Molly Hatchet and though it was their song. Ok, now I know better, but Molly Hatchet is still my favorit, because the sound and arrangement is so strong and ... all in all it "fits best".
I have heard all these versions but one. I too took an evening listening to them side by side once a few years ago. Very enjoyable. I think Bonnie’s version might have done reasonably well in Sweden too but i might be remembering that wrong (?). Bonnie Tyler had quite an impact in Sweden in the 80’s. I kinda like all the renditions. It’s just a very well written song. 🎶
I once read a rumor that Gene called Ace and asked him not to release his version, as KISS knew they wanted to release their version as well.. You ever heard anything about it?
This is correct! Being Co-Producer & Bass player on the record... I rejected his request. I first heard the song when I recorded it with Bonnie Tyler. I loved it, and brought it to Ace and Eddie Kramer ( who was Co-Producing ) and we recorded it. Fun song to play
When the Kiss version came out, Paul said we were going for our Living On A Prayer. At least thanks what I heard way back then. Made sense at the time as Kiss took on the serviced of Child after Jovi already had and had galactic success
Love this song, and as a rock and metal kinda guy until now I only knew that Kiss and Ace did this song. With that being said I think I like Bonnie Tyler and Molly Hatchet's version equally to the two version I've always known!!!... Great job on this by the way, you know your stuff man!!!
This was my favorite KISS song of the Eric Carr days. I only recently discovered all the other versions a year or so ago and I was like whhhhhaaaaat. I went down the rabbit hole and I had also taken ambien to make the experience all the more crazy.
I wasn't very familiar with this song, but I enjoy hearing different versions of the same song. The Molly Hatchett version really surprised me; I never heard it and had no idea they were still going by then. As you mentioned, the song does sound very Bon Jovi-ish, as if it were written for a video to be played on MTV. I tend to lean toward Aces' way of doing things because he has his own style and doesn't sound so commercial.
I love hide your heart But I prefer silver spoon or king of hearts I also love Somewhere Between... the album is underrated I guess AMERICANS got so many to choose that you guys didn't even paid attention to good music ALBUMS!!! Liked your video thou Keep making more👍👍🙂
It's funny that right around this video was made me and my buddy are discovered all these different versions when I only thought there were two kiss and ace Frehley's. I absolutely love the Molly hatchet version cuz of the keyboards it's literally the best part of their version. The rest of them I can go without because kiss definitely has definitive version
I remember seeing that KISS, Ace Frehley and Molly Hatchet’s then current albums all had the same song on there, and had heard that one of them was requested to hold up the release of their album so as to not flood the market with too many versions. (I heard it was Ace who was asked, but Atlantic, his label at the time, said the album had already been slated for it’s release date for six months.)
Love the song. I think Ace’s version sounds the grittiest due to his unique voice. and prefer that over the others though you are correct about the weak solo.
I didn't know there were these many versions. I love the Kiss version and the video. It's an eighties West Side Story, New York City vibe. Kiss being from New York....
I love your videos Sean. Wishing you the best. Metal hails..KISS version is way better than all the rest. "Hide Your Heart" from KISS jams! I am not into anyone else's versions, though Ace's was interesting, but no one's versions were anywhere near KISS' version though this video is very interesting to see, and learn about all the different versions. It's crazy. "Hot In The Shade" wasn't one of my favorite KISS albums, though it has a couple great songs, but "Hide Your Heart" really rocked on this album and so did "Boomerang" and "Forever" as well as "Rise To It". I can't believe so many people wanted to record the song "Hide Your Heart" at the same time. Very weird. Haha. That's probably why Paul Stanley dropped the use of Desmond Child after that.
Awesome video! I remember getting HitS and Trouble Walkin around the same time. It took me a few listens to realize they both had the same song, LOL. I like KISS's drive and vocals, but Ace's solo is better. His solo I think groves better with the song, while Bruce (I love him, but...) almost sounds like he's just tinkering around making sure his instrument is tuned right. great to hear snippets of the other versions and nice topic.
I've always liked this song, but Ace's version was my favorite. It felt more raw or "tough" as you said and I felt that this song needed tough considering the content. I am curious how much $ Desmond Child made of the many versions of this song now...lol
As a toddler watching the Ace music video on Do ya (not HYH) on a vhs tape of kiss and kiss related videos, I wanted to be the girl in the music video. Crazy to think Kiss originally demoed it, had it rejected, then officially released it last after a handful of covers.
My order: 1. KISS (simply due to Paul's vocal) 2. Robin Beck 3. Ace Frehley 4. Bonnie Tyler 5. Molly Hatchet While I agree that Tyler and Beck's versions are similar, I think Robin Beck's is much better (that whole album is excellent) so I see Bonnie Tyler's as an inferior version of the Robin Beck version rather than the other way around. Stanley is absolutely the voice for this song though.
Always loved this song. However, for me, I prefer Ace's version as far as the the vocals. And just because to me, it seems to have more feeling to it, where KISS' version seems more calculated/mechanical. I do like Bruce's solo a bit more.
Great Post! Thanks for crediting me on both versions, and indeed I brought it to the Trouble Walking project... after recording it with Bonnie . Still LOVE the song.

I've been a kiss fan since 1975. I am now 60. Ace has always been my favorite player in kiss. I'd have to say that his version of hide your heart is definitely my favorite. His solo rocks however the guitar work for the Rhythm portion is very heavy
I had no idea there were other recordings of this song til now, gotta say Bonnie Tyler’s is my favorite. Her delivery takes it, cool breakdown too.
I'm 53 years old, been a HUGE KISS FAN since I was 6. Great fun band! Thanks dude for bringing back great memories!!!
I'd only heard of the kiss version and Ace's version, had no idea all these other artists did versions. I like the song, the chorus is super catchy and fun to listen to. I think kiss did the best version what wins it over for me is Paul's vocals on this track
KISS, Ace Frehley AND Molly Hatchet all released theirs the same year. Only KISS issued theirs as a single, though.
I also only heard the Kiss and Frehley's version I like Ace Frelehy's version but agree about the solo
I wondered why KISS didn't play this on any of the reunion tours where Ace & Paul could have traded verses & it would have been a fun addition to the setlist.
That would have been cool for sure! Probably wouldn’t fly if it had it been suggested though as it isn’t relevant to the makeup years. 🤷🏻♂️
I saw KISS about a few years ago and they played it. Interesting to see them do it in make-up.
Back in the day, I actually heard Molly Hatchet’s version first. I like how the lead guitar plays the melody. I like the KISS version the best followed by Molly Hatchet. The others are okay.

Very good song and a fine run through in this video. To me, only Kiss and Ace really had the feel for the song.
thanks for the explanation
Great Tune 👌🏻
I love both the Kiss version as well as the Molly Hatchet take .........
Something I only lerned in recent years is that Hot in the Shade IS made up of demos. "Mixed down" and mastered (fairly hot to my ears)
Great video.
KISS' version takes number one in my book followed by Ace's version. The truth is, I never knew there were other versions.
Like or Dislike: Like. I never knew about any of this, and the video clips are exceedingly helpful.
Check out the Satin album, A Million to One which is an album of KISS covers and he covers this song.

I'd say the Kiss version hands down!
Thanks for story. My favorite version is Ace Frehley)
My favorite versions of Hide Your Heart:
1. KISS
2. Ace Frehley The Original Spaceman
3. Bonnie Tyler
4. Robin Beck
Love the song and kisses version is my favorite
I love this song but I really love Ace Frehley's version of Hide Your Heart.
As a toddler watching the Ace music video on Do ya (not HYH) on a vhs tape of kiss and kiss related videos, I wanted to be the girl in the music video.
Crazy to think Kiss originally demoed it, had it rejected, then officially released it last after a handful of covers.
My order:
1. KISS (simply due to Paul's vocal)
2. Robin Beck
3. Ace Frehley
4. Bonnie Tyler
5. Molly Hatchet
While I agree that Tyler and Beck's versions are similar, I think Robin Beck's is much better (that whole album is excellent) so I see Bonnie Tyler's as an inferior version of the Robin Beck version rather than the other way around.
Stanley is absolutely the voice for this song though.
Still on my top 10 kiss songs.
It's funny you said that about Hot in the Shade sounding like demoed. Because that is basically what it js
1. Robin Beck
2. Molly Hachet
3. KISS
4. Bonnie
5. Ace
Regarding the songs sounding like demos, that's because these are the demos. They liked what they had in the demos and polished them up for the album.
This is so weird!
LOL!
Thanks for posting!!!
Theme of HYH was directly lifted from West Side Story.
Instrumental: Ace
Vocal: Kiss
"Rosie" by Richie Sambora sounds also similar to Hide Your Heart
Robin Beck's version is my favourite
Always loved this song. However, for me, I prefer Ace's version as far as the the vocals. And just because to me, it seems to have more feeling to it, where KISS' version seems more calculated/mechanical. I do like Bruce's solo a bit more.
i did not know !!.......only the kiss and ace versions !!!
