2 million in 1911 is a little over 66 million in todays dollars. That’s a lot for a business that only existed for about 10 years. Wow! It’s hard for us to even imagine what the Great Depression did to our country. Not to mention the fire that destroyed the original mill.
Just never realized lumber was so important to Florida. Although it does make sense as they used the mill to generate electricity. Just have never thought of Florida as a “lumber” state.
I agree. Flagler would be very proud of how his “idea” has turned out. The Brightline is something!!

Hey Mustang! Holy crap, 66 million dollars WOW! I love when you add info to my videos, I get to learn something new all over again! I kee thinking I've covered every possible question someone might have, and you always add to. I get the joy of learning 3 times over! Going out to film & experience the location, researching my script online, and then reading your comments and what you've added from outside. I am enjoying this so much!
I never thought of Florida as a lumber state either, that was quite the surprise! The interior if the state has so many surprises though. And yet somehow development pretty much south of Orlando has been mostly coastal, thanks to those railroads. It's really all so fascinating, especially how fast this has all occurred. In the grand scheme of time, this ~150 years isn't even the blink of an eye!
Flagler would have been such an interesting man to get to meet. Probably on my list of people I'd hypothetically love to have dinner with and pick his brain, if he would be agreeable to such. I sure would love to know how he feels about the way Florida is today and how his legacy more or less put Florida on the map. Can you even imagine? How far was the scope of his imagination, surely he did not foresee ALL OF THIS that we have today. But he was for sure a visionary, so he saw something coming down the pike (no pun intended!). I like to think he would be really proud of what his accomplishments accomplished!

You always give us something unique or different to think about in your adventures, and as I listen to you, I often wonder how much that would be in todays dollars, or what is the impact of this or that happening back then, compared to what it would be like today.
Stacey says I Always “overthink” things. Usually this comes in handy when it comes to doing projects around the house. But drives her nuts if I’m overthinking the movie we just watched. lol. I think it comes from being an engineer. Ok an Architectural Engineer. But 1 plus 1 equals 2 in architecture the same as it does in home projects. I “see” everything as an engineer. So I overthink videos I see. Kinda cool that you’re a lot like me when it comes to learning more. You’re teaching me, I look into it, find more about it and teach you. Just think that’s pretty cool. ☺️ I enjoy it also Julie! A lot!!!
I think it was a state park you visited a month or so ago where there was lumber mentioned. And that was when we first learned about the lumber industry in Florida. So it was interesting to me to see it come back up in today’s video again. Kinda like trains, they keep coming back up, so it’s much more important than we once realized. Changes how we “view” the state and helps us learn how it is the state it is today.
I’m thinking a video or even a series on Mr. Flagler and his accomplishments to Florida would be an interesting thing to see. We’ve talked about Disney a lot, and how it’s shaped Florida, and there is tons out there about Walt and Roy and what they’ve done, now I’m interested in learning about Flagler. 🤓. Not as well known, but obviously an interesting story that I’m beginning to want to learn about. And he’s not the only one, you’ve taught me about several interesting people in Floridas history. This month has been a blast!! 😁

Good morning Mustang! I've known a few engineers in my life, and you're right, they are always overthinkiers! And their brain works in a completely different way than the average person haha. It takes a lot of intelligence and smarts to be an engineer, so even though I don't understand the overthinking, I know it helps keep things like doors from blowing off planes etc! I tend to overthink when I'm stressed about things, so maybe I can relate a little bit. I always think I have covered all my bases in these videos and left no stone unturned and no questions left to be asked, but you always think of something LOL!
Ahh you must be talking about the park Abra & I went hiking at when Michael was on his work trip! Yeah that was interesting, one of the first lumber sites I have visited so far. My interest in Florida's history started last year when we visited as many ruins of sugar mills as we could find, and most of those sugar mills doubled as saw mills! It does keep coming up, I think there's at least one more lumber related video coming out this month. It's not the most exciting topic, but I do think it's really cool how everything was working simultaneously to develop Florida into such a tourist hotspot!
I'm sure there's tons of videos on TH-cam about Henry Flagler, but I do think I would like to make a video of my own someday. His house and burial plot, as well as many other important buildings he built, are mostly in St. Augustine. I've thought before if we make it up that way, maybe doing a video on him while I have some good footage. We were there last fall on a trip with my uncle, and sadly I didn't film a thing! But St. Augustine is beautiful, and I'd love to go back!

Another thing I've learned over the years about engineers, is some are the dumbest smart people I've ever known. They think one way, engineering. But they cant seem to grasp common sense or just simple logic. They refuse to even listen to logic, or explanations as to why they may be wrong about something. (Actually one of the reasons I've gotten away from engineering as a profession.) I try so hard not to be one of those type people, admit when I'm wrong, learn from my mistakes. Some engineers can't or refuse to do that. LOL The stories I could tell..... 🤓
I think you're right, it was you and Abra, Michael wasn't there. Exciting or not, still adds to my learning of the history of the state. And as you know, I love doing that.
You're probably correct about Henry Flagler video's, I see in the side bar different videos suggestions pop up from time to time of subjects you and I talk about. My Playalinda video is showing up now as a suggested video. First time I've seen that happen. 🤓 Yesterday, there were videos about the Brightline... The algorithm must work sometimes. I get lots of videos that help me with editing with the software I'm using, but also software I don't have. Works sometimes, fails other time. LOL

The algorithm knows what we want to see! It's always hilarious when you see your own video get recommended to you. That's happened to me a couple of times now HAHA. Very awkward! :)
