I'm happy to hear you enjoyed This Wretched Valley! Though the book is fiction, Rockcastle County Kentucky is a real place. I grew up in the county beside it. I did lots of hiking, camping, and canoeing there when I was in high school and college. After reading this book, I don't think camping there will be the same. 😰 Side Note: The author owns a horror book store in Louisville, KY called Butcher Cabin Books. 🖤

Haha, yeah I suspect camping there might be slightly tainted! I wish we had more horror bookstores near me. Only one is about 2 hours drive away :(

I was pleasantly surprised by how much I loved this book. I could not put it down. Keifer's inclusion of survival, psychological, and supernatural horror made this such a compelling story. Also, after reading this book, I went on a deep dive into The Dyatlov Pass Incident. Keifer drew on this actual historical event when writing this story. Great review!

Thanks so much! I had heard that Kiefer had written about the Dyatlov Pass incident, but had assumed it was a short story or something, I clearly have to watch some more videos on the incident as I didn't catch the similarities here.
I was also surprised by how morish the writing was, I had to drag my eyes away from it in the wee hours to salvage some sleep every night, so hard to put down.

@BenjaminsBookclub Yeah, it's weird that I'm 49 and had never learned about the Dyatlov Pass Incident until I read This Wretched Valley. It makes me wonder how many other historical events I'm missing. Thanks, United States public education🙃😂

I liked this book but I didn't love it the way I thought I would. Still, it was a decent read and I think you've done a good job summing up its strengths and weaknesses.

Thanks so much! I really appreciate it!
I wonder if it has to do with expectations, I went in expecting the book to be just okay.
