Syros reminds me so much of Santorini. After visiting Santorini I think we would prefer Syros. Absolutely stunning! Awesome drone shots. I smiled throughout the video looks like our kinda place! Great tour guys! ~Cara 😊
You guys would luv it! But it's very different from Santorini. It's not so touristy. Also, I could be wrong but... it might be the most populated Cyclades island during winter. A lot of Greeks live there - Trevor
We stayed in Ano Syros last year & so enjoyed it too! We did the walk down to the port & back up several times and got a good work out at 63 years young! 😅 We were told it’s often called the Catholic quarters.
I've enjoyed watching these last few videos of lesser known Greek Islands. Thanks for highlighting them. I've been to Naxos, Paros & Santorini. As you mentioned, Santorini is a beautiful place but it's way overpriced and it's being ruined by the crazy amounts of cruisers that get dumped onto the island each day. The crowds really take away from your enjoyment of the island. I loved Naxos & Paros because the cruise ships don't stop there. I would like to go back to Greece and check out some of these lesser know islands that you're showcasing. Thanks!
Nice to see you visiting islands we have been on many times or years ago. Like Chios, Samos and now Syros. So much familiar to see. We love your comments.
Syros was the second most important city of the new Kingdom of Greece, as a main port after Piraeus. When the canal of Corinth was opened, it lost its significance and Patras took its place (at the end of 19th century). When Greece was largely expanded to the north in 1912, Thessaloniki became number 2 since then. Did you visit the Church of Dormition, with an icon painted by El Greco, from his early years?
I have visited Syros by mistake but it was my best moment in Greece. I meant to book an Airbnb in Mykonos, evrything was super expensive, then I saw a cheaper non-refundable option. I booked it right away without realizing that it was on a different island. I only realized it later. After i did a quick reseach, I was inloved right away by the beauty of the island and it's history. Also it was only a short ferry ride to Mykonos. So, I added it to my itinerary. It was the most authentic experience during my time in Greece experiencing the local greek culture. th-cam.com/video/00H4MQy6qBA/w-d-xo.html
Hey, Trevor and Anna! It is fun to see the places that I also explored in Ermoupoli. I have a photo of the same cat napping in the same place. It was hot while I was there so I swam off those cement platforms and it was amazing. Even at the end of September, the town wasn’t too busy. I took the free city bus up to Ano Syros and then walked all the way back…so many stairs! - Cheryl, from Naxos
so beautiful, I would love to be there right now guys, love the buildings they are awesome and the marble ground is epic. The fodo in Greece looks so delicious, I am sire if i went there I would come back 10 kilos heavier lol
Re shops are closed in the afternoon. It's something that is a common thing in Greece. It relates to the heat in the summer when it's too hot to work. And long ago there was no AC, so shops closed because it was too hot inside. But this "phenomenon" became something that was done all over the year and became "normal". On many (smaller and less touristy) islands you can see sometimes signs or stickers with " Please respect the quiet hours". This is usually between 2 and 5pm.
Syros is fantastic… I was there in October too. Perfect time….However if you are using ferries just be aware that the winds start picking up in Sept / October so there is a chance of ferries being cancelled. I was delayed in Syros for a few days because the ferries couldn’t run….. But a great place to be stranded!
The modern Greek shipping industry started to emerge by the 18th century, in Ottoman & Venetian-ruled Greece. Ermoupoli emerged as a prosperous town, a status that continued into the 19th century. Athens had declined in importance in the Early Middle Ages, and was revived in 1830, when it was chosen as the capital of the modern Greek state. So, around the 18th century and early 19th, several cities were more important than Athens. 😊

The best part of the year to come to Greece is September.

So many stairs! Were you there in high season? It felt like no one was up there when we were there - Trevor
Yes! 😅
We were there in early June 2023
Came in fall this year.
Currently in Athens 😊

It’s so pretty! Thanks for sharing your travels, Trevor and Anna. Have you been to St Ninian’s cathedral in Antigonish? The ceiling is kind of teal :)

Oh we know... but sometimes we still forget this happens 🙈 In Canada and the US, you just don't see this. Those are prime business hours - Trevor

Beautiful! You guys didn’t eat much. Is the food pricey?
Loved the city but hate the steps 🤦🏻♂️ it’s simply too much for me. Thanks for do the walking for us 🤩👌🏼
Be safe guys 🙌🏼
Yeah there were way too many steps. We wondered if anyone actually walks up them ever haha - Trevor
You did not go to the Hermoupolis theater which is similar in its interior to Milan's "La Skala".
No.. but our apartment was right next to it - Anna
Love your video... How do you get your hair like that, Trevor?
Thanks... my hair is just like that I guess haha - Trevor
