    I wore Harlick’s way, way back in the early 80’s. They only had a couple of color options. Yours are beautiful!

    I just picked up my Harlick’s this past week. They are so beautiful and just what I wanted. I had a 2 bunions on my right foot. It was quite painful to skate so went to them to solve this issue. I’m so excited!!

    Beautiful skates! I have the same ankle/navicular bone issue. Was in excruciating pain. I currently use my own little homemade foam donuts, kind of like the ones you used to use, but a little smaller. Works great! I tried punching them out, but it was a bit hard as the bone is right where the lace holes are. Would be amazing to try custom boots some day, but for now I’ll have to stick with my edeas given i live on the other side of the world from anywhere you can get custom boots.

      I have them! My warning to you is to be careful how long you’re skating in them and temper your expectations accordingly. I got mine a month ago and they were really nice and supportive at first, but I pretty much destroyed them in a month because I skate 8-10 hours every week. So they’re great for between and hour and three hours a week, I’ve heard, but more than that they won’t last a real long time.

    Thanks for sharing! I hope to be ready for custom skates soon enough, maybe within a year. OK! 1) About breaking in skates! I'm not ready for Harlicks yet -- Only been skating a couple of months. But! I just got a pair of old school Jackson Classiques which were barely used, and learned that I cannot heat mold them to my feet due to the plastic outer soles :/ So I'll have to "mould" them to my feet with skating + sweating - and a lot of pain, I assume. My first time on the ice with them, I felt they dug into the front of my calves terribly and it was really difficult to bend my knees much. I also felt they are so much bigger and heavier than the skates I learned on, that I have to lift my legs much higher and further extend them to do basic crossovers. Finally, the toe pick must be both bigger and lower than my first pair of skates, because I caught it on the ice right away - which I never did before even once! Any advice on these issues will be much appreciated, as I'll now be breaking in my first pair of stiff boots ever, and it's already extremely awkward and painful. * Another interesting difference was that, when skating backward, I just kept gliding, whereas in my other skates I used to have to work constantly to stay in motion -- It must be the better blades on these Jackson Classiques? They have Sheffield 21 blades, which I just had sharpened to 7/16 (up from the 1/2 I learned to skate on); 2) What lipstick are you wearing in this video? haha :) Thank you

    • @CoachJulia
      @CoachJulia  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Breaking in skates can be tough, but it is worth it to take your time and make sure you are breaking them in properly. The higher end blades do tend to have much larger toe picks which helps with more sturdy jump take-offs and landings, but can take some getting used to when pushing. Make sure you push with a nice deep edge to avoid the toe pick connecting with the ice. Oh, and the Lipstick is from Arbonne in the shade “Guava”. I love it! Super healthy for your lips. You can get it here..... www.juliadurkee.arbonne.com

      Maybe you can try warming/heating the inside of your boot with a hairdryer before putting them on and lacing. Someone gave me this tip when I got new skate and it helped.

    Same issue with the ankle bones, but have Edea, and can easily punched out on the synthetic boots. The boots are lovely, and I too love the tan, as I was also a show skater. Are your blades the lightweight version of Goldstar?

    • @CoachJulia
      @CoachJulia  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I have the Goldstar Revolution. 😁. I wish punching out could have solved that problem for me, I did try that. And I do have the Navicular bone area punched out further down. But the ankle issue really was caused by the hook opening area of the boot falling right on top of my ankle bones, as my ankle bone on the inside is set a bit forward. So having the hooks right on top of my ankle bones created an enormous amount of pressure, that was finally relieved when they cut the boot opening so that the hooks came farther in front. Amazing what they can do! Glad you are happy with your Edeas! There is a boot for everyone right! 😊

    I had a bad experience. Im an intermediate skater adult skater. I did my fitting online. Probably my first problem cause I live in Montana. My skates are so uncomfortable and causr me pain that i just put them away. Im back to my old Jacksons for now till I cam figure out what to do. $1700 later. So sad!

    • @CoachJulia
      @CoachJulia  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am so sorry to hear that. Have you tried doing any video consultation with them since you got the boots? Even though mine are custom, I always have to have the ankles punched out to give more room for my protruding bones. Perhaps there is still something that can be done for your boots.

    Like the channel name and enjoyed the video. Figure skating is not what is used to be at our rink. It is hard to find good info about boots and blades. Especially about sharpening. I sharpen alot of figure skates but mostly low end stuff. A custom pair of hockey skates can cost like $1200 with the blades. If you don't mind me asking about much for a custom pair of figure or dance boots? Perhaps you have been a separate video but what do a decent pair of blades cost?

    • @CoachJulia
      @CoachJulia  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So the base price for a pair of Harlick boots is $795, that price goes up as you add fancy options to the boot. They have a whole price list on their website you can check out if you are curious. The blades, I am not sure because I got mine at cost + 10% and spent just over $500 on them, I think they retail at closer to $700.

    • @YourLocalIceMan
      @YourLocalIceMan 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CoachJulia So your talking about maybe 900 for the boots and another 700 on top of that for the blades. Ouch. But as you said a good investment if you are using them.

    • @CoachJulia
      @CoachJulia  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s about right. Definitely an investment. But I got about 10 years out of my last pair before I retired them to coaching only skates, which works out to about $160 a year if you divide the cost. Much more reasonable when you look at it that way as well.

    • @CoachJulia
      @CoachJulia  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Unfortunately there aren’t any stock boots that I know of that have that feature. Until you can afford customs, your best solution is to try and get your boot punched out in that area and try to make some kind of doughnut padding to take the pressure off.

    im really curious about the blades. is there any advantage to having blades the shape like yours? (the zigzag type as opposed to "normal" ones) i have a pair of old skates (new to skating) and my feet are tired even before i step on the ice, and im thinking if its the pressure of the blade, balancing on a small thing on the middle of my foot. is that normal and does the zigzag blade help with that do you think?

    • @CoachJulia
      @CoachJulia  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That is a great question. The advantage to the blades I have are they weight difference. They can be up to 30% lighter than the standard blade as the temp section that mounts to the boot is made with this fancy carbon fiber tech. It also has what MK blades calls Flex Steel which means that because if the two part constriction, the blade has a bit of cushion on landings and such which can ease joint fatigue. I really love these new MK Gold Star Revolutions and have definitely noticed a difference in fatigue level, so for me the purchase was worth it.

    Hello I found your video very helpful and I wanted to thank you for posting it. I have a question about the beautiful chem glaze that you chose for the finish on your soles. It looks good now but later on after deep scuffs and scratches, etc is there anyway to touch it up when polishing your skates. For example I've used snow seal after warming up my soles when I had a natural finish and on my last pair of stock Harlick's they never treated the sole so I used a heal and sole lacquer that worked out well it made the soles water proof and made them look brand new after retouching. But it looks tacky if you don't apply very lightly. So does Harlick sell something like this so you can retouch the heels and soles on your boots if you choose to get the chem glaze finish?

    I have a question: Should a skater get measured for boots before or after a practice session? Do the feet swell significantly during practice?

    • @CoachJulia
      @CoachJulia  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would say, get them measured before. Skater’s feet can expand, but usually not to much because of how cold it can be out on the ice.

      Ditto. But you don't have to have Harlick skates in order to have fun skating. I went with Jackson's Ultima and those were only about 125.00 ish I've been liking them so far and honestly the very first pair of skates I bought were ultra cheap little pond skaters from American Athletic for about 30 bucks. Those worked well for me until I started really getting into learning crossovers. They aren't built for that so had basically 0 ankle support. That being said they felt 1000x better than the rental skates I started with and paid for themselves within one series of lessons. My LTS has an option that is cheaper if you have your own skates plus I didn't have to pay for rentals every time I went to the rink to practice. Plus I knew that only my feet were in the skate. I am an adult beginner (30's) so I'm not worried about Olympics or super high level competition, although I am contemplating testing and maybe some lower level.
