It feels like they planned this death for years, an iconic character dying on Christmas Day in the middle of the Square as it was snowing. So when Wendy Richards decided to leave, only Pauline Fowler, the matriarch of the original central family of the show could pull it off.
Terrible what they did to Pauline in the last few months. The Pauline that lied to Martin about having a brain tumour is like a completely different character compared to the one who was sticking by Mark when Peggy banned him from the Vic for having ‘AIDS’, or the one who confronted Dirty Den for getting her 16 year old daughter pregnant.
I can see it, her being so desperate not to be alone she starts coming up with demented things to guilt and manipulate. Not a proud thing, but people do desperate things when backed into a corner. Just like her marrying that fool because she thought he could be a replacement Arthur. Its sad, because it's not so much butchering a character, but tormenting one who's had a hard life until they start getting cold and twisted. You know Pauline is a character, but it feels like an almost abusive relationship between Pauline and the writers, until she breaks.
