Welcome back, Will! I discovered you a few months ago and binge watched your videos. I love your storytelling and all your photography insights, not to mention where you live and work. As a child I remember watching “land of the giants”, and I studied invertebrates and microbes in college - so observing the very small has always captured my imagination. I’ve started to dip my toes into macro photography, so this is very timely. So glad you are back, I’m looking forward to seeing more of your content.
Thanks for the welcome and thanks so much for watching the videos over the last few months. Sorry, I haven't been making more. It was never my intention to be away so long. I hope I can stabilise things and make more soon.
Hey Will! Fantastic to see you again! Sign idea: "Warrning This vehicle stops frequently" - with a camera icon of course Maybe do a magnetic sign so you stick it on Basil only when intentionally going out with the camera.
Thanks for watching and the support! Yeah that could work although Basil is aluminium - although maybe the back door is steel, I’ll have to test with a fridge magnet :)
"Stopped for Macro" is my suggestion. Hi Will, great to see you looking so healthy and out and about doing what you do so well. Your audience has missed you and your wonderful informative videos. Please dont leave it too long before the next one. How about all the R6 settings you use and why .
A very good video on macro photography. I bought the Laowa 100mm f2.8 x2 and it is a great lens. I used Sigma 105mm f2.8 macro. However, LAOWA with manual settings is a return to the past young boy I was shooting Nikon F60 with Tamon 28-200mm. After 30 years I am shooting again with manual lens. Greetings from Cracow, Poland.
Congratulations on the new lens and so glad you enjoyed the video! I’m looking forward to using the lens much more myself once I finally move the family to our new town.
Super interesting video Will. Must admit I still admire the old lens designs with the aperture ring next to the body - Canon FD and Nikon F examples that I once owned. A quick glimpse of your old Minolta was heartwarming to say the least, I had a 101 and a 303 in the 70's !! Thanks for your great videos 👍👍👍
For now I'm only using tube extensions on my stock lens to do macro photography. (Sony a6100 with 15-50mm lens 3.5-5.6) Macro is the reason I even bought this camera. As a blind person, it's amazing to see things in such high detail.

@WillGoodlet im used to getting up early but this was different could not sleep in front and not after so it was a short bight. I’m moving to Graaff-Reinet in the Karoo, 900 km from Johannesburg where I live now. Lots of stars and mountain zebras. The canon is actually pretty inexpensive. Going to be good for video and shooting in a car

Lekker to see a South African using this lens. I'm quite keen on it. Doing my homework now. May I ask where did you buy yours from, assuming it's not a loaner or a rental?
Thanks for watching. It was loaned by Laowa. But you can buy the lens directly from the Laowa website or from LandscapeGear.Co.za Also from B&H in the US. There is no duty payable on lenses, just VAT and delivery charges. It can work out cheaper. Laowa offers a 3 year warranty if bought from their website. You’d have to check warranty on B&H

I thing that the Laowa 90mm 2.8 Macro is a very good Lens, I will like to see it with data transfer for EXIF data, I do not really need a 2x Macro Lens ! I use the excellent Voigtländer Macro APO-Lanthar 65mm 2.0 Aspherical and the Voigtländer Macro APO-Lanthar 110mm 2.5 Lenses which both have outstanding optical image quality, second to none !
As mentioned in the video, I found the focus to have pleasant feel and good throw. But easier to move the body to bring the subject into focus particularly while holding the subject.
Good morning Thanks for your feedback I discovered today that there is also the identical 100mm What is the interest for you between this 90 and the 100? I'm new to macro, and I can't evaluate Thanking you
The 100mm is an older version (I mention it in the video) it doesn’t have the same lens configuration in all mounts and it has no glass over the mechanism, instead you screw on a provided filter. Otherwise its similar
@@WillGoodlet thank you for your reply I use the subtitles to understand you but I was talking about this modell Venus Laowa Objectif 100 mm f-2.8 2X Ultra Macro APO - Canon RF Is this the model you are referring to? Thanking you again
Wonderful video Will, I really like you add some humor in the mix in this review :-) It's almost too good a video, I kinda get the feeling it is sponsored by Laowa... Nah just joking I'm guessing it really is that good a lens! I only know the brand by reputation and seen other photographers work with Laowas lenses and they come highly recommended by professionals and amateurs alike from what I can gather. I've got one question that you might be able to help with. It specifically says it is designed for full frame cameras, do you know if that means it wouldn't work well on an APS-C like the R7? I have an RP and an R7 and I love them both (Yes I know what it is like slugging around two cameras also ;-), and it would be great if the lens would work well on both cameras. As for a sign for Basil maybe 'Official Tax Collector' would help keep other people to stay at a distance to you?
Sorry I missed replying to you sooner, it should work well on crop sensor cameras. It resolves very well - and that’s the main issue, having all those megapixels right in the middle of the lens. I was using it on an R5 which is only 18mp in crop. Your R7 is double so will really test the lens resolution but thats fine, I think it is still a good option. I’ve always tried to buy full frame lenses even on crop cameras because eventually you always end up getting a new body and the crops don’t work or only work in crop mode. Oh and Ps, it wasn’t sponsored they did let me use the lens though!
@@WillGoodlet Thank you very much for your reply Will, it is much appreciated and no worries about taking your time :-) That is great to know as I will probably invest in one of the Laowa RF macro lenses. I will likely mostly use it on the RP full frame, but having the option to get that extra working distance and the additional resolution with the R7 is really nice to have as well. I do the same when shopping for lenses and always buy full frame. An R5 is quite a ways outside of my current budget, but I may save up for one down the road. I wasn't serious about Laowa sponsoring you, but they couldn't have asked for a better advert for their lens the way you did your review ;-)
Haha thanks :) Reviews put me to sleep (actually fall asleep when making them) so if I didn't try to lighten them up I'd never get through them. Unfortunately, YT loves reviews. Thanks for watching this one!
"Do not disturb", "Only Macro Photographer", " I got COVID", "Please, be quiet", "Video filming now", "No Leopard here !" "Not seen anything", "Please, drive by", Gun pointing at you !" there are many options 😊I know those kind of people, they can be very annoying... 🤔
Macro photography is not for the person who wants to sit down while shooting. Macro photography requires that you are fit enough to get down on the ground, and back up again.

As mentioned in the video, I found the focus to have pleasant feel and good throw. But easier to move the body to bring the subject into focus particularly while holding the subject.
Good morning
Thanks for your feedback
I discovered today that there is also the identical 100mm
What is the interest for you between this 90 and the 100?
I'm new to macro, and I can't evaluate
Thanking you
The 100mm is an older version (I mention it in the video) it doesn’t have the same lens configuration in all mounts and it has no glass over the mechanism, instead you screw on a provided filter. Otherwise its similar
@@WillGoodlet thank you for your reply
I use the subtitles to understand you
but I was talking about this modell Venus Laowa Objectif 100 mm f-2.8 2X Ultra Macro APO - Canon RF
Is this the model you are referring to?
Thanking you again
@clissonplage yes that’s the one.
More videos will hope all ok
@@martingibbons8021 will get there soonish!
Хороший обзор, спасибо !
Спасибо за просмотр!
Welcome back good sir! I thought you got captured by hyenas or something.
Thanks Kasey! Well that would have been a better excuse (I might steal it) I fell over and damaged some discs.
@@WillGoodlet Damn sounds painful. Hope you heal up soon!
idea for a sign -Botany shots not safari spots
awesome how you are incorporating more comedy in your videos
Haha thanks :) Reviews put me to sleep (actually fall asleep when making them) so if I didn't try to lighten them up I'd never get through them. Unfortunately, YT loves reviews. Thanks for watching this one!
Your sign….”BUGGER OFF ‘’
Haha, that would work :)
Haha thanks for all the suggestions. :)
Large photo of Speed camera with a small ant, so if police stop you can saying you’re macro filming.
We don’t want people slowing down :)
For the sign “ talk to me for religious advice” 😂
@@martingibbons8021 Haha but I fear they may actually do it!
Lets have some more videos Will
Macro photography is not for the person who wants to sit down while shooting. Macro photography requires that you are fit enough to get down on the ground, and back up again.
Of course, but you cannot do that in a South African national park. You get eaten (potentially).
Sign: “leopard? Nope! Creepy crawlies!” With some ant or spider graphics
How about : Live MACRO work in progress....please stay quiet ...Thanks
Thanks Steve :)
So we shouldn’t stop and ask you if you’ve seen something then 😂
I never see anything, I’ve drove past 5 leopards right next to me (that I know about) my wife and my friends see them
😂
Cant stand the music
Ok. Thanks for sharing
