  • The score of the only string quartet written by Fanny. Although I believe it has its obvious flaws, especially in the area of development which Fanny seemed to acknowledge in an 1835 letter to Felix, the style can be reminiscent of Felix's quartets at times which I would personally consider an achievement itself.
    0:00 Adagio ma non troppo
    3:42 Allegretto
    7:17 Romanze
    13:54 Allegro molto vivace
Performed very fittingly by the Fanny Mendelssohn Quartet.

This piece has terrifying passages, at least for violin 1. But overall, very beautiful

Hmmmm... at 2:56 the first violin plays a slightly different melody then the score. I wonder if the part was engraved differently?

My guess it is an error in the part, or at least a difference. This score and another score shows at measure 64, for the violin, the notes G, A flat, B flat, A flat where as the players here and on other recordings place G, A flat, B flat, C. Tiny difference but it is there.

According to the manuscript, the violinist played the correct notes. Must be an editing mistake in this score and others.

@@loivo5707 According to which manuscript? The manuscript given here shows, in measure 64, the notes G, A flat, B flat, A flat. The violinist plays G, A flat, B flat, C. Is this score wrong? Or is the playing part wrong? The playing part, I presume because other scores of this quartet shows the same notes as this score.

@@davidyoung6331 The score is wrong in this video, the playing is correct. The manuscript of this piece in Fanny's writing is available on IMSLP, I'm assuming it's a transcription error.

    • @davidyoung6331

@@loivo5707 Probably. On IMSLP, there are two transcriptions of the score. The Hensel Pusher has the violin playing b flat - c at the end of the measure. The cypressdome has the violin playing B flat- a flat the end of the measure. I couldn't view the first entry. Furthermore, there are several other scores available on-line, at a price. The B flat - c makes more sense to me. Strange that there is an error. Not so strange, however. I have found about 4 or 5 errors in the manuscripts of Dvorak's chamber music, most of them acknowledged by publishers.

“Obvious flaws”? This piece is a brilliant masterpiece that subverts expectations at every turn and could only have been written by a highly knowledgeable composer deeply familiar with such expectations. It is a far more interesting, intelligent, beautiful, and exciting work than any of her brother’s 6 quartets. Also, it seems a bit disrespectful to refer to this composer by just her first name when the convention for other composers is to use the last name.

Thank you for saying this omg!! I read the description and was like…the disrespect??? Does the person who wrote the description know that she prolongs a root position tonic chord until the VERY last quarter note of the first mvt? That is a super artful and difficult way to develop the movement. The blatant disrespect of a very underappreciated female composer is so cliche. Do better

I mean no disrespect to her, the only reason I'm referring to her by her first name is because Felix is objectively more mainstream, and the mention of "Mendelssohn" has never brought anybody but Felix to mind in anybody that I've ever met. It was simply to differentiate them. I see where you're going, I agree that it's a brilliant work, especially for someone who had as little experience as her with string writing, but in terms of development it feels... clunky. At many times, it feels certain motifs and ideas are drawn out beyond their capabilities, almost as if she had trouble deciding where to go next. This is where Felix's quartets excel in my opinion, as I will absolutely disagree with you on the idea that this is a better work than any of Felix's quartets. The development between turbulent minor passages and lyrical motifs is almost seamless, not to mention Felix excelled at writing melodies. Don't get me wrong, I am *not* saying by any means that Fanny's quartet should be discredited, as I could never even come close myself to writing anything with as much substance as it, but even Fanny admits, in the letter I mentioned in the description, "I lack the ability to sustain ideas properly and give them the needed consistency. Therefore lieder suit me best, in which, if need be, merely a pretty idea without much potential for development can suffice."
If you interpreted my comments as disrespectful, that was absolutely not the intention!

Who is Fanny? Did you mean, Fanny Mendelssohn? What a lovely piece! Please try to show some respect, even though it seems you find it difficult to accept a woman composer! Reality check: this is the 21st century, yes?

    • @RomanticScores

I’m sorry that you feel that way. I find it quite interesting that even though I have difficulty “accepting them,” I still went through the effort to create a score video for analysis of her piece. Anyways, thank you for giving me a good laugh. Hopefully in the future, you’ll find the ability to contribute to the discussion of her accomplishment rather than leaving only a sarcastic, rude comment trying to victimize her for her physical traits. Cheers!

She made a bad composition, people say that it is bad and now you say that we can’t accept that a woman is a composer and that it is the 21st century outside? Bro you need treatment. If a person writes bad music we say it is bad music, don’t teach people how to live/respect anybody, if you’re offended that a woman(which is probably you) couldn’t write music that everybody likes that’s your personal problems

      Criticism is a form acknowledgement...
You don't waste your time on someone who isn't worth engaging with as a serious composer.
