- We enter The Secret Aquarium using 0 A presses in 8 minutes. This is TAS.
Previously, entering The Secret Aquarium took around 51 minutes ( • Enter The Secret Aquar... ). Since then, Marbler figured out that we didn't need as much speed as previously thought for the final castle movement, now needing only ~1000 instead of ~2000. We brainstormed together where we might get this much speed from, factoring in that it must be done while still having 0 stars in order to trigger the text on the PSS door. I suggested maybe a pedro spot in VCutM, and Marbler found a spot and angle that worked, since it could launch Mario into a ledge grab, which lets us exit out with all the speed. And so then we TASed it, resulting in a final time of about 8 minutes.

nothing is funnier in the abc than entering a level by first entering 3 other separate levels
tbf, the only one really needed was the one in the drained moat, other two levels were just to show it from new save
@@OatmealTheCrazy you actually need it to be a new save, cause the textbox on the one star door is necessary to redirect Mario in the final moment before the ledgegrab
@@entitylockingtonYou can still reach VCUTM first from a new save, it's just faster to go through BoB and BitDW

@@entitylockington You can also access VCUTM from a fresh save without entering BOB or BitDW, it's just that in order to do so, you would need to build up speed for a while which actually makes it faster to enter all three instead of VCUTM alone

Funny how most of it is just the process of getting to the basement to drain the moat. That's such a goofy pedro spot, though.

For some reason when I saw VCutM I thought sliding speed conservation by falling out of the course (not like that would have helped anything) and not a simple pedro spot to ledgegrab pause exit. The old strat was so iconic, shame it's no longer the most efficient known way of doing it.
it's not as hilariously convoluted as the previous strat, but it's still great and much more efficient!
In a full run, I assume it will seed right into the necessary parts, but this video just had to be comprehensive. lol.

As someone who plays a lot of troll levels in Mario Maker 2 where the Slider theme is often synonymous with a softlock, the image of Mario in the Pedro spot for four minutes while that theme played had me in tears

The fact that most of this video makes sense to us, the lay public, is telling a lot about the educatinal value of this channel on SM64 strats.
The original strat is one of the most creative in the entire A button challenge. And that doesn't matter, this one obsoletes it because it gets things done in a much more efficient and straightforward way. And I think that's beautiful.

The old strat is a classic but this one is pretty nice too. Either way, a time improvement is a time improvement. Good job for everybody involved.
4 minutes into the 4.5 minute video I had to double check that I was in fact watching how to get into the secret aquarium.
When Mario was being crushed while gaining speed, I pointed at the screen and yelled "THAT'S A PEDRO SPOT???"

I'm still amazed that it's possible to get through Bowser in the Dark World with 0 A button presses. I've basically had my jaw permanently dropped for over a decade of watching videos like this one.

Once Mario became a literal fulcrum, I actually yelled "OH, COME ON. HOW DOES ANYONE FIND THIS?"
As much as I prefer the really cool old strat, it's super cool to see something so formerly near impossible be done so elegantly! Love seeing optimizations like this even if they make the run slightly less cool overall
Am I the only one who still thought you needed MIPS to pound the pillars 0x? It's the tiniest part of this video but the only part that completely caught me off-guard.
Because he never made an updated "castle movement" video in case it gets obsoleted again - so the ancient one is still in the playlist. It's probably about time, though, there's been no castle movement saves for a long time and there's not expected to be any.

this guy can identify any way of this secrets and also he can notice 1 pixel and a bit of code in super mario 64, even the smallest detail, he can still notice it and even watch you while you play sm64, that's a real professional and a expert at super mario 64.

This is bittersweet, this strat is really clean and simple, but the old strat was so cool and complex, definitely the more interesting of the 2

This is really cool, and it's awesome to see all the new strats. I also like the outdated ones as well, since it really shows how creative you all are
I don't remember seeing one of these TAS videos start from the very beginning before.
That's because they don't need to, but Enter the Secret Aquarium does. This HAS to be the first star you get in the run, which complicates a lot because you need to get to Vanish Cap under the Moat for the speed building. This why the video shows the entire process of getting there (the speed in BOB being used to enter BitDW to get the key, allowing you to go to the basement to drain the moat).

This was a wild ride. Didn't expect to start from a fresh file, but I guess you need the princess' secret star door to be locked for this strat to work.

Cool to think that when I started watching these videos on this channel and the main one, there were over 200 A presses and seeing all them go down one by one has been amazing.
Each time I see that spedometer I can tell it's going to be some good tech involved.
I was expecting the weird spot at the top of the ramp divider in VCutM but seeing that spot used instead is pretty cool to see. I'm curious to know if Mario sliding VS in a falling pose in a Pedro Spot makes a difference?
So that's actually due to the game never having a chance to update the animation since every single frame Mario is changing action. There are three total rollouts there that quickly get Mario up to 48 speed, and from there Mario is simply falling, but the game is stuck in the animation of diving. It's purely a visual thing.
Nothing like saving 40 minutes on a strat. Wonder if it’ll ever get to a point where it’s not the required first star.
I looked pretty strongly into this, and in order to accomplish this you need about 1700 speed, but the most you can bring up to that height is 1100ish by using the previous strategy.

Hey Pannen I had a random thought about Shifting Sand Land. Have people tried getting speed inside the pyramid by intentionally entering and than dying? Because you would skip the star select screen and maybe small amounts if speed are available in the basement?

Would this conflict with anything else in the hypothetical full 0xA run? This specifically requires that you do it first thing in the run since you need zero stars to be stopped by the door and doing the secret level gets you a star. If there is anything else in the run that would require 0 stars then you have to choose based on which option saves more time.
This is no different than the previous 0xA strat, which used SSL instead. The 0 star speed redirection from the PSS door is vital.
Yeah as far as I know, this is the only star that needs or would even benefit from the PSS door redirection - so it's not a conflict. Theoretically if another strat were discovered that required it then that could be an issue, but it's hard to imagine a way any of the remaining A presses would benefit from PSS door speed redirection
