Herbie really teaches us to be kind to one another. He’s adorable little bug. Deep down inside it shows us that anybody can suffer depression and loneliness. I remember watching this as a kid. I didn’t understand what it meant. I see now how very dark it is. People suffer through this everyday. We as a society should we should be there for each other. The good and the bad times.

Though I doubt the fall would have really "killed" him, he survived being thrown overboard a cruise ship and left in salt water for a long time, why he was in such good shape afterwards be fought a bull then smashed apart a crappy Cessna all while driving countless miles through South America, little bugger's a tank!

2:17 - You know, saying that the car just saved Jim's life is actually pretty funny. The way the cop says it can sound like Jim was trying to jump off the bridge, and Herbie was trying to rescue him. The irony makes gives this dramatic scene some much needed relief.

    • @arbytv5139

Well, in a way, you are both right and wrong. On one hand, it was Herbie, who was trying to commit suicide while Jim was trying to stop him, and talk him out of it. It took Jim slipping and hanging onto his bumper for dear life, knowing that he was sorry for taking him for granted, (not to mention, Jim saying "I can't hang on much longer!") For Herbie to get out of committing suicide, reversing back onto the bridge, and, in turn, saving Jim's life as well.

This scene always upset and depressed me as a kid. Thinking that Herbie put all his heart and effort into making Jim a proud and successful race driver, only to be betrayed because Jim couldn’t bring himself to admit the truth that Herbie was the real racer and he was a fraud. Or in his own words from an earlier scene “only half a man” 😢

This is why the Herbie sequels after were simply just not good imo. I mean this is what brought herbie to life for me. He did everything he could to make his owner happy, and Despite his best efforts, Jim couldn’t see that he was alive. Heartbroken, depressed, and in an act of desperation, Herb decides life is not worth living anymore. All the films after were just made for cheap laughs. Except the 97 movie; that one got deep

Fun fact; this was Dean Jones' first scene on the film, so he wasnt sure how the scenes were going to go or how they'd look, he was just trying his best going in blind. Compare it to the scene where Herbie nearly gets crushed in 'Herbie the Matchmaker' here on TH-cam and you can see how much he settled into and embraced the role. :)

And I will say this again because I feel this opinion so much and state it many times:
fully loaded is I hate that it's the end for the franchise because in my opinion, it ruined some of the old charm and heart of the original movie(s). That Herbie just isn't Herbie to me. They ruined his character in a desperate attempt for money on a remake. If you're going to do something, or remake a classic, get it right. Herbie was one of the first to be ruined with remakes, and he just didn't deserve it... nor did the legends who helped make this original masterpiece in the first place.

Highly likely these days Disney wouldn't be able to get away with a scene that depicts suicide. Even though it's a car and not a person. But Disney probably wouldn't try do it anyway.

Just a thought, I wonder if the writers were at all influenced by The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka. We think of Herbie as being a car with a life of its own but, when watching this scene back now as an adult, I wonder if Herbie was a human who became trapped in a car and that's all part of the depression. Almost certainly not, and I am over-thinking this. Btw, I know it's all fictional lol!

Like Disney You Can't Calm Down Not One Bit Can You?!?!😠
Also That Scene is To Dark to be in a G Rated Film, I'm just saying.

MrSupercar55 Herbie is physically a car, but internally he is a human being! You can see that he can drive himself, have the ability to thinking and also he can talk to anyone by his horn, means he is a human being trapped in a car's body.
Not a ghost, but he have mind of its own, which definitely prove it that he is a human being. Unlike Christine, he have a good and lovely mind, but Christine have a evil mind to kill other people!
