How they always disregard Jonesy is shameful really. It seems like they think they could have done the same things with any other bass player, which is nonsense obviously. Not calling him for No Quarter was a shitty move. I mean, none would think they could do "a Zeppelin thing" without Plant or Page, but somehow JPJ seems replaceable, which is utter bollocks. And they even named the tour after the song that is possibly THE JPJ's song, No Quarter. If that's not a slap in the face I don't know what is.
Good for you Jonesy, for this comeback, a true rock'n'roll moment, and the guys totally deserved it.

+extenebrislux I only saw Led Zeppelin perform live one time in 1977 at the Oakland Coliseum at a day on the green. They were my favorite band. And for some reason all my friends talked about was how great Jimi Page and Robert Plant and John Bonham were and the other guy. Not much was said about John Paul Jones contributions to the music. I have been fortunate to see some great bands perform live in concert and I always like to analyze each member and check out out their individual performance. Frankly I was blown away by John Paul Jones and how important he was to the overall sound and texture of the music. I saw The Plant and Page tour years later and it was not even close to that sound.

    • @rebekahraja3853

Look at Plant's face after Jones makes his infamous "comment" at 6:30 which was obviously directed at the Page-Plant tour that excluded him. You can't blame Jones for feeling hurt or left out I mean, Bonham's dead and there are three left. If two go on tour, that is kind of rude. This probably wasn't the best venue for it but at least he was heard. Plant and Page both look pissed! They all look better and younger at the Kennedy Center 17 years later!

Plant didn't quite hear what JPJ said and asked Page. You can see Page say 'phone number' to Plant. Plant is not very gracious in his speech here. He clearly didn't want to be the spokesperson. Page always seems reluctant to take a lead with the media and JPJ clearly felt he was treated as though he wasn't a core member of the band. Jason Bonham's speech is the most touching and the most gracious on behalf of his father. I do understand Page's and Plant's reasons for not including JPJ in some of their projects. They didn't want it to be called or seen as a Led Zeppelin reunion or relaunch.

Plant and Page were very close and the same can be said for Bonham and Jonesy. I think a few people overlook how heartbreaking Bonham’s alcoholism would be for John Paul Jones to witness and to see his best friend slowly fading away. Bonham could be described as boisterous and hot tempered, but he always protected Jones. You can tell that John Paul always felt safe around him by the way he stays next to the drum kit at every concert or live performance. We seem to value Plant and Page’s friendship and bond, but not many notice JPJ’s and Bonham’s. How heartbreaking it must’ve been to find your best friend dead. Without JPJ it wouldn't be Led Zeppelin. That was exactly why they didn't called him. They weren't trying to do Led Zep stuff, they were actually making new tunes and throwing in a lot of old stuff for the fans. 85, 88 and 2007 were Led Zeppelin Revival (although, only the last two were actually more than passable quality-wise, 85 was plain rubbish, 88 had its moments and 07 was fucking badass). I don't really think they excluded JPJ because they thought he was replaceable, I think they were just trying some drastically new direction on their old and new sounds and, If all three members were there, people would actually be like: "Hey, wtf is this middle-eastern sounds in my Led Zep concert?", you know?

You cannot take away the raw but natural talent of Jimmy Page. He is the benchmark, he is the foundation, and his is the keeper of the rules for all legendary string men. However, many of those younger than 55-60 may not understand how talented John Paul Jones actually is. When Page and Jones sat down as composers, it was like Johann Bach meets Ludwig van Beethoven. They were both musical masters with no limits and never settled for the traditional three cord, four piece band style. They never compromised with the changes, they invented the path and blazed the trail. A good in depth listen to No Quarter will educate many people as to the raw talent they have. Zeppelin survived the changes and never cared about following the crowd. When Disco hit, Zeppelin was number one. When Techno hit and industrial underground hit, Zeppelin was number one. And when Punk, New Wave and Rap was the new style, Zeppelin remained the benchmark. Led Zeppelins last show in 2007 Holds the record for the quickest sold out concert of all time. All 9 studio albums and their 4 live albums went Platinum and most Diamond. No band will ever come close to those numbers. I feel very fortunate to have been a teen growing up when Zeppelin hit the scene. And I feel even more fortunate to get to see them live in 1977, fourth row, center stage in Fort Worth Texas.
