Ash Regan blasts SNP incompetence for redefining women in failed gender law then having to backtrack

- The Gender Representation on Public Boards (Scotland) Act was passed in 2018, but included transgender women in its definitions.
A challenge to the legislation by campaign group For Women Scotland resulted in a court ruling that the definition should be removed because the Scottish Parliament does not have the power to change the definition of woman.
As such, a one-page Bill was proposed by the Government removing the definition altogether.
On Thursday, the Bill passed unanimously with the support of 108 MSPs.
Speaking ahead of the Bill’s passage, Social Justice Secretary Shirley-Anne Somerville said the amendment was “technical”, adding: “The Bill does not change the policy intention of the 2018 Act, we still need the boards of our public bodies to reflect the population of Scotland.”
Scottish Conservative Tory deputy leader Meghan Gallacher said MSPs were “spending parliamentary time today fixing yet another mess that was created by the Scottish Government”.
She added: “Had it not been for women’s groups challenging this Act, this amended Bill would not be before us.
“I am pleased that we have fierce, resilient and brave women right across Scotland will not tolerate their rights being eroded.”
Scottish Labour MSP Martin Whitfield said the 2018 Act was “an important step on the journey to better gender parity and increasing the representation of women in public life”.

As an adult human female I found the previous amendment frightening and treacherous. It filled me with anxiety interfering with my capacity to access medical treatment which I need. It has taken a lot for me to write this and I wish I didn't have too. I know 2 other women who feel similar to myself. I fear even more for the future of our children.
No government ever should have the right to bend and invert natural law and the structure of reality that has been self evident from the beginning of life on this planet.
Transgender people should of course be acknowledged in legislation, I don't believe anyone has ever disputed that, but not at the expense of half the population. Why can't they have their own category?
A big thank you to Ash Reagan, the other few MSPs and campaigners who worked hard for what is simply right and just.

I would like to add there are many men who also will not tolerate the erosion of the rights of women, there just doesn't seem to be many of them within the SNP. This dangerous and incompetent party needs to be removed from power and common sense restored.

Much of the legislation passed by the Scottish Government with their obsession with gender politics has not resulted in protection of minorities. Instead it has created privileged minorities, spawned division, stifled free speech and impinged on the rights of the majority.

Meghan Gallacher presents a very competent exposè of what this “incompetent” SNP has created. Meghan rightly highlights the damage to Women Scotland and to my mind the SNP is trying to destroy and eradicate what Women have courageously achieved over decades and more.
