    This is one of the best classic car videos I have seen. A real on the road evaluation of the car while driven in modern traffic! It sort of answers the question we all want to know, what is it like to drive one of these? Another video that would be helpful would be hear the car's owner, and his mechanic, give us some tips on the best way to maintain the car while rolling on the miles. Bravo to the owner for putting the car on the road so often. Anybody can own a car, but it takes real commitment to pile on the miles.

    Wow, that was great! Back in the 80’s, I remember seeing several Gull Wings every year at the annual Newport Beach Fashion Island Mercedes show. We thought they were expensive back then...from $10-50K, the latter for a pristine “number 1” car...little did we know.

      I remember well when these were US$200,000 for a VERY long time. And not just these . . . 959s and 288 GTOs sat at the US$200,000 mark for most of the 90s and into the 00s . . .

    Oh man, such a beautiful car. I might have actually seen it on one of the 1000 Miglia videos on TH-cam! I'm not a classic car guy, but if I was going to purchase one, this would be it ... after I won the lottery! The last 10 seconds of the video was priceless. Thanks a million George! (or should I say 1.5 million?)

    Goodness Gracious look at all that bright work! That interior have of it to give a modern beancounter a heart attack lol. God I miss the craftsmanship of the post-war era. Just beautiful work inside, out and under the hood too.

      It truly is a work of art - so much so that whether you are a car person or not, one is just stopped in their tracks to admire the detail that went into constructing this rolling sculpture.
      I have had a close relationship with this specific car for about three years now and even today, I stop and admire her . . .

    I dont wanna brag, but Ive seen quite a lot of them at HK in Polling, this engine and gearbox isnt exactly sounding very fresh anymore. It may be the mic and audio recording but if the engine is rebuilt this thing purrs like a kitten - an angry kitten agreeably :D The car doesnt feel “tired” when properly maintained which is really amazing given its age.

    Lovely set of wheels, but when are you going to do a piece about the beautiful Pagoda SL, sitting pretty in the back of shot?

    • @MotoManTV
      @MotoManTV  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I love classic cars and would love to feature more of them on a regular basis but full disclosure, while we want to shoot the Pagoda, it is not one of the first of the classics slated to be shot. As mentioned in this update (th-cam.com/video/ezl4XP7durI/w-d-xo.html), classics are a tough sell on YT which is why we have not featured them frequently on the show. We are doing this test of a run of RETRO DRIVE REVIEWS to see if that has changed since the last time did them 5 years ago. So the short answer to your question: Depends on the view counts of the RETRO DRIVE REVIEW episodes over the next couple of weeks.

      Once I start traveling again, Dave is going to come on Inside the MotoMan Studio and talk to that very point but let me take a stab considering the US$50K budget:
      1.) Small block early C3s are screaming bargains and an underrated car because everyone wants a matching numbers, big block.
      2.) Triumph Stag. Many laugh at me for this choice but it's a small V8 that sounds like a Ferrari, with Italian styling. Only caveat, you MUST know a guy who can set them up the right way otherwise it will kill you. There are many rats. Buy the best you can.
      3.) Z32s are dirt cheap right now. They won't stay that way for long. Especially nice ones. Even though they are early 90s, they are still very analog in driving experience. Here's an episode on one: th-cam.com/video/5ekyMHx62NQ/w-d-xo.html

    So this car was worth about $70k in inflation-adjusted dollars when new, but its modern equivalent costs double that. I would argue that the new car is so chock full of safety features, space-age materials, and computers both seen and unseen, that it more than justifies that increased relative cost.
    BUT!
    Think about this. The original Gullwing is the kind of car that dreams are made of. If there were a team of welders, mechanics, metal workers and other craftsmen working away in a small factory building cars out of tube steel and aluminum/fiberglass, with crate motors, a few hundred units/year, I bet they could hit that same ~$70k price point, but the vehicle produced would be the kind of visceral experience you get driving something from the 50's or 60's. If only our auto industry had the same small-volume manufacturing laws that Britain had.

    • @RoyMcLellan
      @RoyMcLellan 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@owinthomas I hate to admit it, but you're right. Stupid litigious society. Companies like Factory 5 avoid this by making you build your own car,but how many people are really going to do that.
