    You could rig up a handheld food mixer with a wire brush tip and buzz the foils off. Nice experiment.

    You can by a sack/big bag of the salt that are ment for melting ice and snow, no need for food graded salt ;) much easier with a sack and ofc the melting salt is not iodized.

    Done a few times before, your electrolyte is fine, try to suspend the piece instead of sitting on the bottom, it helps alot for deplating. And you need MAP gas instead of propane. Propane just doesn't get hot enough. But absolutely love your videos. Expanded my knowledge alot, just hoping to help you alitte with this.

    I used to own a scuba shop and we did a set up like this to clean artifacts we recovered! A friend of mine is the director of operations for Mel Fisher’s museum and I’ve seen their artifacts being cleaned by methods like this too.

    Thanks for the share~! Been waiting for this one. Looked up some of the other similar YT videos in advance. Now you have to save metrics on total costs and see where you can save ...like gas for smelting and a 55 gal drum for all that "copper cottage cheese" There's silver in thar! Agree tho, concentrated acid is serious business and this method looks reasonably SAFE. Now I wait for "Part 2"!

    We used to melt down fishing weights we retrieved from a Manasquan and Shark River inlets to make weights for our weight belts. This video brought back a ton of memories! Thanks!

    Used to do this in the 80s. It helps to scratch the surface with course sand paper. Or allows better and quicker removal of silver.

    DAVE, HOW DO YOU STRAIN YOUR SILVER FLAKES FROM THE WATER? Maybe I missed it, you showed the flakes coming off the dish in the water, then they were all in the ziploc bags. Fascinating video, sharing this one!

    I know that this is an old vid ,but maybe you will get a notification . Try taking your clamp off the positive and use a plastic clamp to hold the wire (cable) to the plate . I will keep thinking and come up with something without a steel spring . Good Video

    Absolutely fascinating! Please show how to get the silver out of the water bath. Also, explain the role of borax in the flux. How you get the flakes to melt down.

    Yes! I've been looking forward to this one! I don't know anything about this, so forgive the dumb question, but why use another piece of plate on the positive side. Seems like it would contaminate the final product. What would happen if you used a sterling tray?

    Can you hook up the stainless steel one on the left side and one one the right side you can just switch the silver from tub to tub? I think you have to switch chargers too.

    Is that coppery salt water safe to put down the drains after use? What do you do with cheesy coppery stuff? Extremely fascinating. Look forward to your jewelry making in the winter.

    O.o Definitely costs less this way then it does with chemicals! With chemicals you dissolve all of the metal which to me seemed dumb... If silver plated why did they want to dissolve the copper. (Was my curious mind, wondering)

    Mix lead in, it’ll oxidize the base metals in the silver and leave you a button without the base metals

    Great video but I do have a caution for all who may try this...
    Make sure you are working in a well ventilated area, running electrolysy in salt water generates Chlorine gas which is toxic in high concentrations. This is exactly how salt systems in swimming pools work.

    With all the time this took and the money you spent on the silver plate, it's probably a lot cheaper to just buy silver. Time is money. Very cool to see this though.

      Silver just isn't cost effective to refine alone unless you're dealing with very large amounts, or a bulk wastes from gold refines. However if one were to simply use a torch for removal of the silver from the base, I'm not sure how you would prevent further fusing to the base metal.

    Question... the solution with the copper in it. Can you take it and salvage the copper in it? And if so, can you recommend the easiest way to do so?

    Common Stainless Steel is "austenitic" with higher chromium and nickel content. The nickel makes it non-magnetic.
    Basic Stainless Steel is "ferretic" so magnetic. It has a high concentration of iron (ferrum).

    You should treat your sediment with sodium hydroxide to convert the silver chloride to silver oxide, then add sugar to reduce it to silver metal. Yes, you are leaving a lot of silver on the metal which is quite a waste considering how much effort you have put into it.
