Also, unfortunately, dying or reloading resets the distortion. So if you have a genius plan to save in one, look for what you want and then reload... Well, you'll likely reload into an empty, open field. However the timer works, it's based on your active session.

@@ericacevedo5366 Mine was Shieldon. Waited for distortions in the Coronet Highlands for HOURS and every time one happened, Shieldon did not spawn in. I literally shouted out loud when it finally spawned. But man, sometimes I had to wait for 40 minutes for a distortion to start pfffff

2/11 Edit: The "Post Game Column" is actually for the portion of the story where there is a Rift in the sky and the weather is unavailable.
2/17 New Findings: Intense Sun, Snowstorm, or Thunderstorm will prevent a space-time from spawning.

To be honest I’ve been spawning at the second camp and just waiting for the space time distortion to show up, so that makes a lot of since. I’ll also admit to killing time by watching an Austin John video in between distortions
FINALLY some concrete information, this has saved me. I'd always sleep to change the weather, and go back to town after one distortion. You and serebii have changed my playing experience, now I can also farm alpha starters lmfao

My first cyndaquil was an Alpha. Whew was that quite shockingly scarily cool
The BEST thing to do while waiting for the time space distortions is empty your bag (so that you don't need to open the menu) and break crystals for items, break chests for items, catch Pokémon from behind, and look for treasure with Ursaluna. It does not reset the timer.
I love my Alpha Porygon-Z. It was one worth entering a battle to keep in for enough time to catch it, at least for me.

This makes a lot of sense cause I was about to say I am convinced that I get the space time distortions to form EVERYtime I decide to leave Pokémon alone and go collecting for crafting. Riding around in an area without sleeping , battling or anything and just picking stuff up they spawn a lot.
Remember to kill or capture mobs and alphas in the distortion before it begins. New Mobs and new alphas will pop in the area after it
Yea, but they'll just reappear after the distortion is finished. Sometimes I'll forget and an alpha will roll up on me
They will also spawn back once the Distortion fades!
@@Derbearian Actually they do NOT. The Pokemon that spawn in after a Space-Time are NOT the same pokemon. they are unique between stats, shiny stats, and more.

I was literally just searching how to do this and someone said to wait in the over world for 20 minutes and it’ll be spawned, and it actually worked. What a coincidence, keep up the great content 🔥

I've had multiple occurrences of being in the middle of dealing with an outbreak, just to be told a rift was forming, and each time I was like 'damn... it'll have to wait until I'm done here, I guess'.
This was *extremely* helpful because I evolved the starters too soon and needed to find more and the only way to do that is space-time distortions and while watching this video a space-time distortion formed and I found and Oshawott! So thank you so much!!

This was so helpful! I’m at the point where I need the Porygon line, Weavile, the fossil Pokémon and such to finish the Dex and waiting around was beginning to get tiresome. Thankfully, the “just wait around at camp” approach doesn’t take too long.
I quickly figured it had to be a sit-and-wait situation when I was doing a lot of mass outbreak hunts and realizing that I hadn't had distortions in quite awhile. Good to see a video backing that up!

Man, I spent 4 hours trying to get one to spawn in last night... I'm so happy this video exists! I was running around doing pokedex challenges. Now I know
One time I was in a space time distortion and accidentally pulled out Braviary instead of Wyrdeer, so I switched to Wyrdeer immediately and dropped to the ground. Just that fall damage killed me... Right in front of a freshly spawned Shiny Glaceon.

Haha glad I followed your initial advice of just hanging around at the second camp, did it with all of my 'mons out of their Pokéballs to make it less boring, and I gotta agree it was consistent in spawning disortions. Watching videos in the background and doing the map checking thing, too. Helped me when I was completing the dex and is very consistent every time I want a distortion to spawn. Glad I could stick with the trick!
When I’ve waited on distortions I’ve just gone around collecting sachels and that seemed to work for me pretty well.
For the odds of spawning, I think the numbers get added to the chance, so in 5 minutes in post game it's 20%, then at 10 minutes, it's not 10%, but 30%.
If you look at the odds, and add them all together, they add to 100%
as someone who is just past the Crimson Mirelands in the game, another tip that I have on top of that is to perch yourself somewhere high up where you can look at the land below. This can be handy in case you didn't pay enough attention to the screen and missed the notification because you will easily see the distortion forming from where you are
Hey Austin. I've always noticed you open the menu when you're battling and want to throw a poke ball. You can do it from the bottom right quick menu by pressing R2 on the item you want to throw while battling. Saves you a couple of seconds. Not sure if that interested you but just wanted to see if you'd read this.
He's done it in a previous video! He stated he prefers opening the full menu (tbh so do i)

I saw another youtuber do that and was surprised that you could do that. Never noticed the quick menu on the bottom right. I always went into the actual menu.
It's more comfortable on my hand to do the menu during battles, since I shift my hands to a different position where I don't have a finger on R2
I dont seem to have any issues with space-time distortions. I see a lot of people who need help. This looks like a really good guide for those who are having trouble. Personally I just roam around and do a lot of stuff and I get like at most 6/7 space-time distortions, but hopefully those who are having trouble are able to use this guide to help!

I tested this too with my fiancée while hunting the rifts for starters and got the same results you did Austin.
I had my Pikachu and Eevee Switch Docked, sitting and doing nothing while at camp the entire time. Post Game Save, with Shiny Charm. This one got the most rifts, usually around 15 minutes.
I had the Sword and Shield Switch Lite -post game but no shiny charm, being played while looking for Shinys and staying in the area. This one was slower, likely from battles or resting to heal Pokémon. This one’s time varied but was longer. Typically 30-45 minutes.
The 3rd was a Smash Bros Switch in handheld mode on a game save still in progress, doing regular play such as leaving the area to come to town, do stories and missions, etc. this one by far took the longest. Would easily take 45 minutes to an hour or more. Likely from going back into town, resting, battles, being in menu, etc. so I definitely recommend letting it sit in one spot and do nothing to spawn the rifts the quickest.

This video would’ve came in handy yesterday when I was trying to catch Magnemite, Porygon, Weavile and Craindos ended up just going to their specific places and just waiting until a space time distortion opened up eventually caught them all but it took like the whole day lmao

Yeah I had this with my last pokemon I needed, which was shieldon. I waited an entire evening for distortions to start and it just would not spawn in. Also sometimes it took like 40/45 minutes for a distortion to finally spawn.
Everyone says Cherrim is the hardest Pokémon to catch well I think porygon and magnemite are the hardest to catch because of time distortions and I just need those two to catch Arceus!!!

I've caught at least 5 Porygon and Magnemite in a few different distortion. My hardest after cherrim were the fossil pokemon. All 4 popped into existence in one rift, then before the pokemon could be fully caught, they disappeared. That hurt my soul
@@SilvaShadow1990 I actually got cherrim out of luck pretty quickly could be the game knowing I’m close to Arceus and making it hard anyway possible to prevent me from getting Arceus. Lol
For anyone sorting by new: this method still works. Opening menu allegedly "pauses" the timer but doesn't reset. Put a stopwatch on, open map every 5 mins or so, look for the icon. First one took me 15+ mins, second took me almost 40, but they did spawn! Got my fossil pokemon at lvl 10.

This is my findings about space time distortion spawn:
1. It only happened in 3 (maybe 4) specific areas in every maps (for example: in obsidian fieldlands, it only spawned at near Horseshoe plains, near tidewater dam, and near sandgem flats)
2. I got space time distortion spawn every 15-20 minutes everytime i'm playing by doing this: I just enjoying my time, go exploring the map, catching pokemons, no sleep at camp (this is important), using stun item is fine, throwing food is fine, mining material is fine and collecting wisps is fine. Battling pokemon is fine, but it will delay the spawn a bit.
Seems to check out based in my playtime so far. 5-ish hours and I've gotten about 10-15. I mostly occupy my time with just running around collecting items, and catch-and-runs with no battling and not resting at camp almost at all as healing items are plentiful enough.

Thanks for the vid man! I've got the shiny charm and have started to hunt the starters via Distortions. Im doing rowlet 1st and optimizing the hunt by getting its evolution line and the fossil pokemon to research lvl perfect since they spawn on the same distortion map. This way the ones I have a higher chance of phasing for are quite a prize in this game 🙏
I stupidly evolved the other starters before completing their Pokédex entries, and I'd read up they could be found in the distortions, but didn't know how often they'd spawn, so knowing how often the distortions spawn is very useful, thank you!

This is actually helpful to know since I've already 100%-ed the game and my only goal now is to shiny hunt the starters. Now, I can do the usual double shiny-hunting setup but this time, with my Black 2 in one hand and this on the TV screen. Thank you, Austin!
How long does it take to 100% this? I’ve been playing when I have free time and ain’t anywhere close to the end.
I think the numbers from serebii are cumulative. That just means that the chance to get it in the first 5 min in postgame goes up by 10%, after the 10 minute mark it's the same as during the story.

Ha! That means my theory was right! It was actually the resting that made the rifts not spawn. I posted the theory on Reddit a week ago (with no real source, just me doing tests) so it is nice that the question is now finally answered. Also this video will definitely reach a hell of a lot more people and thus help them, than my Reddit post that died with 2 upvotes lol
The thing about the rare pokemon being less likely to spawn if you arrive later into the distortion is fascinating to me. It took me around a week to find magnemite, and though I didn't play every day and I didn't spend all of the game time in the cobalt coastlands, I did spend most of the game time in the coastlands. But I got to the distortion late, and nobody showed up but the bouncers. It was kinda soul-crushing lol.
After this video though, I know I was doing it wrong: I was running around battling alphas for their drops, and ended up sleeping a lot through that whole thing! Thank you so much, this is going to make it so much easier to find Cranidos, the last one I need!

Huh, interesting. I’ve actually gotten a space-time distortion several times right after a Pokémon battle just by going to a different place in the same area (ie. traveling to the horseshoe plains from the highlands camp).
I was standing about 5 feet outside of when it officially says you're in the camp when I started the video and literally the moment he said to walk to camp and just stand there I walked over and the moment I saw the message in the top left that I was in the camp, a distortion formed. AMAZING CONTENT I NEEDED CRANIDOS, RAMPARDOS, SHIELDON, AND BASTIODON AND THIS REALLY HELPED TELLING ME TO GO TO THE CAMP. TYSM!!!
Always thought that catching/battling Pokemon made it more likely to spawn...interesting to know I was actually slowing my spawns down doing that. And right when I decided to go alpha hunting for Porygon/Magnemite too
With the % chances shown of a spawn I can't help but notice that both sides of the table eventually add up to 100%, it could be that within 40 minutes of the timer ticking you are guaranteed a space time distortion spawn (in the sense that the longer you remain in the area the more the % increases every new interval). This 40 minutes of course would not take into consideration the time in battles or in menu as you explained as the timer is paused and also I believe you explained it was reset (at least as a 5 minute interval) when resting at camp.
The best way to test this I suspect is to see if any space time distortions when you are idle EVER exceed 40 minutes of time which (by the look of your findings) support this theory with none of your distortions taking more than 30 minutes to spawn when you were utilising the wait method you explained.
I'm mid shiny charm collecting and its making me crazy that I'll go through hours real time not getting distortions. So this is excellent timing.

This makes a lot of sense, because what I’ve been doing is Alpha runs with JUST catching all the set Alphas in an area, no battling, and I get the most distortions that way. Because there’s no pausing that timer.
I got 5 in one area within an hour an a half, and I was running around alot. I noticed when I was sneaking around mass catching like a crazy person nothing was forming. But when I was just running around looking for shaking trees and crafting tools the distortions would form
Thanks! I started doing what you said before where I would leave my Switch on and just sitting there as I'm doing other things and I'd check it every few minutes. I feel like I got a lot more spawns than when I was running around playing the game.
I also noticed that time-space distortian always spawns the closest to your position. When I was farming the fossile pokemon, I went to the summit camp (the 3rd one in Highlands), walk to the narrow mountain (the one left to the graveyard), walk midway and just afk. I did this three times and it always spawned right next to me. So instead of just reliaing to the sound, you can easily see the distortion too.
I missed a shiny Walrein because I had no idea about that 10 second thing! Thanks so much for this video!

The percentages in that Serebii table add up to 100, which makes me think that the table works like a Pokemon spawn table. Which is to say that if you're in an area for 40 minutes, you're guaranteed a distortion. There's just a 25% chance that the distortion happens at the 40 minute mark.
Well crap. Shows how incredibly difficult getting shiny starters is going to be, since I was doing this and got 1 Cyndaquil encounter in I think half an hour when I was just sitting around
Fr, I was tryna shiny hunt Rowlet and got like 4 distortions but No shiny Rowlet. I caught a few Rowlet but no shiny

I also live close to an airport, when I'm at work it's always great hearing the planes take off nearby.
also, it took me a while to figure out why no one ever refers to these as their acronym
The way the graphs reads to me is before post game is starts at 10% at 5 minutes, then ADDS 20% at 10 minutes, then ADDS 20% at 15 minutes then adds 25% at 25 minutes and finally adds 25% at 40 minutes for a 100% chance at 40 minutes. Swap the first 2 chances for post game giving you a 20% starting chance for one to spawn.
The wiki now says "Chance INCREASE" and "Postgame Chance INCREASE".
I have been shiny hunting oshawott for almost 70 hours so far ( in game time) finally more info
Have you gotten to the post game yet? They won’t appear until you do so. I know I spent a hell of a lot of time trying to get hisuan starters to spawn but they never did, you have to beat the game first. ( disregard this if you are already aware )
Love it how you are demonstrating in this video and you straight up see two of the pokemon most people are dying to see straight away, shieldon and cranidos just str8 up spawning for you no worries
They spawn constantly. If you play in the Coronet highlands I would bet at least 1 of them spawns in EVERY time distortion, most of the time both of them spawn. And my sample sizes is a minimum of 30 time distortions.

hahaha, literally as you said about the airplane take-off sound, I thought something sounded weird and, what do you know, there was an airplane flying above our house
For everyone who's gonna shiny hunt the starters, you should 100% get the shiny charm first. Read a lot of comments from you guys where you actually didn't go for the shiny charm first. It took me around 55-60hours total playtime to get the shiny charm. I thought it'll be harder ngl. Quick note tho, I watched a guide for the unowns and the souls so if u wanna do that kinda stuff urself then add another 5-10 hours at max. Currently hunting for a shiny samurott and trust me, 500 more encounters mean a lot... Completing the dex is not that hard. And if you, like me, are gonna hunt for even more shiny Pokémon then honestly just go for the charm. It'll save you a lot of time in the long run. Thank me later :)
I like doing these Space-Time Distortions. Not only it's a way to get items to sell or to gain evolution items for certain pokemon, but it's a fun way to encounter pokemon. Even shiny ones. It also helped level up my pokemon quicker.
With the failures I’ve been getting in making them spawn lately, I am obliged to disagree.
Wish I knew this when filling my dex. I got lucky had had a few spawn about every 10 or so minutes
My first shiny from legends arceus came from my first space time distortion event, strangely after that shiny, every day I got at least one shiny. I have only been playing for 4 days but that’s still a little impressive
I think I had a moment in one space/time rift where I heard the shiny noise just before the rift ended. I quickly looked around to find it but the rift ended so I couldn't confirm what had spawned. Even my friend heard the shiny noise as we were face timing on the phone when it happened.
Same thing happened to me when I was playing with my wife. Nice to have someone watching n listening just in case I missed it. She literally got me 2 I would have never heard.
You could have recorded your gameplay and checked if the sound actually did play. Considering both of you heard it it probably did, but I've had times where I think I hear it and I record the gameplay and it turns out I'm just hearing things

This was very helpful, as the pokemon I'm hunting (as far as I know) cant come in breakouts, so this will help immensely:)
Nice video, especially because it's supported by data. I still have three questions regarding the space-time distortions though:
1. Is there a way to manipulate the distortion to appear in a certain area of a map? I know that Cyndaquil for instance only appears in the northern distortion in the Crimson Mirelands.
2. is there a method to manipulate the items in the distortion?
3. Are the shiny odds the same for the pokémon appearing in the distortion?
1: Nope, they appear at random just based on how much time have you spent on the map. They do seem to cycle zones so in my experience the distortions go around all possible zones before repeating a zone.
2: Nope, you cannot manipulate the items either but it seems that after finishing the first storyline you get more rare items compared to say a distortion after defeating the first lord.
Before postgame I only found evolution items, shards and the occasional star piece or stardust but after reaching postgame, most of the time I find a second or even a third evo item, big nuggets, comet shards and more valuable items
3: We don't know, people are still doing research as it seems it kinda is easier to get shinies but not as easy as mass outbreaks. When I capture everything in the zone from beginning to almost end, I have gotten so far 2 shiny Eevee and 1 shiny onix. When I go to the professor only from the distortion I end up with 40+ mons so maybe shinies do get easier the faster you spawn mons inside the distortion but until further research and data mining, seems like odds are slightly better that full shiny odds in the overworld.
@@gwagner1380in my experience, at least in the coastlands, they’re almost always in the same spot. It drives me crazy honestly.

I did some experimenting myself Austin and I feel Defeating the 3 sisters, if they are there, and then the Outbreak, A Distortion popped for me each time within about 5 minutes or less, If you want you can use this but I have a step by step process I use to farm Distortions. Distortion Farming Step 1: Check for Outbreak, Go to Camp. Step2: Check sisters location, Battle if there. Step 3: Complete Outbreak. Step 4: Wait 1-10 minutes for Distortion (Sleeping doesn't affect PRE-Distortion) Step 5: If it doesn't spawn, Go back to Village, Repeat Step 1. Let me know if this helps at all! So by the sound of it. Being in an area every 5 minutes it checks and rolls for a rift. So u don't have to stand around doing nothing. U just can't be in fights, inventory, or the pause menu. But running around catching pokemon, no battles, just checking balls, running. Grabbing materials. That would essentially be the same as standing around right? Just asking cause I wanna play not stand around 😅😅😅
Are there any alternatives to waiting? How long do you have to wait?
Oh man. The timing. I was watching this while playing and as soon as the video ended one appeared. Followed the advice of just running around and had another spawn in 20min.
Does resting to heal (Just a little while) also reset the timer?
Or is it just the "Until [time of day]" options that reset it?
It does. Think of that screen fade as a reset unfortunately
Awesome, they must have done something about the time space distortion issues, because after the ladt patch they starte appearing afterwards, and yes i did use your "do nothing while you wait" strategy earlier with no result

Posted a hot meme on reddit about how I was bored sitting and waiting for Space Time distortions the other day and it was crazy to see how much just random "information" people were posting as facts to get them to spawn. But no way to prove/disprove any of it beyond personal anecdotes. Glad to see there's some real info out now.
I'm in the very endgame (I've already caught arceus and got to 10 stars) and I need a Cranidos to complete the Dex and get my shiny charm, so I'm really gonna need this tutorial.

Super impressed you hit 10 before getting 10 on all Pokedex entries. I got the shiny charm and still was at 59k/60k
@@Alaspooryorick98 yeah, the trick is doing all outbreaks that come out. Catching a lot of pokemons makes up for a lot of quests, which results in an absurd amount of points. Also, I found Cranidos.
I’m dumbfounded. Thank you for the insight. I was able to catch three Johtonian Sneasels - and all before facing Hisuian Lilligant! I just needed patience. :)
