42 سالہ مرتضیٰ بھٹّو 20 ستمبر 1996 کو بےنظیر کی ہسپتال آمد سے چند گھنٹے قبل ہی اپنے محافظین اور پولیس اہلکاروں کے درمیان فائرنگ کے تبادلے کے میں چار گولیاں لگنے کے بعد شدید زخمی حالت میں ہسپتال لائے گئے تھے اور طبّی امداد فراہم کیے جانے کے دوران دم توڑ گئے تھے۔ یہ انتہائی متنازع اور ہمیشہ پراسرار سمجھی جانے والی کارروائی کیا واقعی پولیس مقابلہ تھا، یا مرتضیٰ بھٹّو کا قتل ایک سوچی سمجھی سازش تھا؟

Few things have to be kept in mind. Firstly, only two policemen were injured during that intense shootout whereas scores of Murtaza Bhutto's guards were killed which points the indicator to the probable theory of a planned police encounter.
Who fired the first shot and why the lights of the area were shut-out instantly? What pieces of evidence were later collected from the incident scene and what happened to their forensic reports?
One of the injured policemen was later found dead in his room under mysterious circumstances who definitely knew much more about the assassination of Murtaza Bhutto and thus was eliminated.
Not even a single policeman was later implicated and sentenced by any court of law related with this incident. In fact many of the officers that participated in this encounter were later given prompt promotions and rewards.
More than 24 years have passed and this case is still unresolved that says a lot about the intent and resolve of the investigating and judicial authorities of Pakistan.
To me, it was a planned operation of police and ISI that wanted to eliminate the dead-wood of Murtaza for some varied reasons.

A person who had a fight with his brother in-law, tried to made his own PPP party .... killed by Sindh police under direct control of Government of Sindh Govt. ... provided that her sister was in power in Sindh and center. while all the promotions that police officers got was under the PPP government ... Furthermore Murtaza Bhutto's outspoken daughter Fatma Bhutto directly blame her Aunt (Phopi jan ) and her husband (Zargari), for her father's killing .... yes ISI is very powerful in Pakistan , but it is not the God. I don't get it how ISI is to be blamed for this .
