I’ve been thinking about picking this game up for awhile. been a long time star ocean fan. But I was severely put off by the last entry today is my birthday though so maybe I’ll treat myself. Definitely sounds like they learned from a lot of the previous mistakes made.
I know it's a 10 month old video as I type this, but I wanted to add something. You mention boss fights being a struggle as you take hits and lose AP with no means to blindside. There are other ways to gain AP that the game only briefly mentions. With blindside being the most prolific and fun method, it's easy to forget the others. The easiest way is through blocking. Rather than just tapping the Duma button, you hold it, and your character will float in mid air. Any hit you take during this will be blocked, drain your VA gauge a bit, and give you an AP. With the amount of multi-hit attacks bosses have, you can quickly recover your AP, but also quickly drain your gauge. So you do have to be careful with it and manage your resources, but it's something that really helped when I played on higher difficulty.
Thanks for such a amazing review on this game! I don't see the amount of time for campletion a bad thing at all because most Starocean fans can just take their time and enjoy the game as a whole, and from my understanding from watching this it's two different types of stories you can choose from which is cool.
I actually was thinking about playing Star Ocean and Tales of Arise at the same time to find which one I do like the most I played Arise demo only and haven't purchased the DLC and I haven't advance that much in SODF so yeah that would make it.
glad you enjoyed it having played like all of em except first departure .. the game is not a dumpster fire like integrity but also on this one.. i cannot help but to feel like tri-ace needs to evolve a bit further.. there is tons of repetition to fill out the gametime without any actual content sadly.. still i did finish this one but it just didnt make me want to do postgame or give it a 2nd go yet sadly its kinda med and an okay play, but thats about it :(
WOW, 1st noticable, your presentational skills 🏆 through the roof. Thank you. What drew me here is Star Ocean. I wanted to learn more. Although it appears as an older PC game, it still caught my eye. I downloaded the to trial one to see if I'd like it. The first thing I noticed after landing on the Planet, was the Menu, I still haven't figured it out. ie: weapons upggrading, Armor upgrading etc etc . . Your info here assists a lot, seriously. But still there's the actual procedure.. the step by step. Thanks for your post on this game. IIM looking forward to more. 👋
I enjoyed the game but I haven't finished yet, the game obviously tell you that sometimes is too soon to be there, camera shakes a bit but I haven't seen if it haa been optimized I played the guy's plot first (I like the blonde and space plot more) enjoyed the combat but redirecting on the pod is weird, I did not disliked it, actually love how it stops and redirects, the art is beautiful character design is kind of cute, I have so many games to finish and some releases but this one is like my third on line.
It was a fantastic and solid rpg experience of which I have been a long term fan since the the 2000s, to call it the game in the last 20 years is absolutely ludicrous, it has it's faults, it's a badly balanced game and kinda drags in the last third of the game.
The only thing that I hate about this new battle system is the AP system, it limits your attack so much unlike the previous titles. Finishing this game felt like a chore to me, but I guess to each their own. Hopefully they make another title.
good review man! to answer the statement on the visuals, when thsi game released it looked awful. Now i am playing on ps5 and it looks like a different game 😂
Man ionno. I've yet to be able to get into this yet i was able to beat so2 remake in literally 5 days because its so amazing. I hate the full real time combat here and the insanely awful interface text make this just a pass. Like i'll go as far to say that the menu is so tiny that its unplayable on a tv and only works if you're playing on a montior sitting right in front of you.
This star ocean did alot of good things but combat is awful. The robot allowing to fly around looks cool but is wonky. I paid for the game to support keeping the franchise alive but Star Ocean hasnt been great since 4. Please return to flashy skill animations. Put all your focus in combat please. Thats what sold SO...the open world was nice...expand upon it but throw Duma and the male character design away.
Thanks for watching! What’s your favorite RPG franchise?
I've always been the biggest fan of the Tales of series! It's not as popular as some others but to me, they're JRPG perfection!

What game should I tackle next?
Holy cow! Each review gets better! I loved it and definitely want to pick up this game! (LOVED: "In the before times...") 😁
Wow, that was pretty unexpected! Thank you for sharing your insights my friend.

Particularly for the bosses, AP was definitely a pain!
