    I have stage five kidney failure, when I was first diagnosed one of the first things I did was buy a water distiller to remove the chemicals from my tap water. Most of the chemicals that are added to the tap water and those that are considered contaminants are very detrimental to kidney function over a lifetime.

    Some of the dissolved solids could be coming from the pipes, not only the ones in your house but also in the cities' water system as well. You should get your water tested by a professional and get a breakdown of what the dissolved particles are in your water, a lot of them could just be harmless minerals but there could also be dangerous compounds as well.

    A cool experiment would be to buy one of those cheap Brita drinking water pitchers and test your tap water before and then again after running it through the built in Brita filter to see how effective they actually are. I might have to buy one of these just to try that.

    • @LakeForkGuy
      @LakeForkGuy  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      We tested the Brita pitcher in Austin Texas and found it dropped the sink water contaminants from 250 to 140ppm

    • @xseaofgreen420x
      @xseaofgreen420x 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      LakeForkGuy Ha! i should have know you guys would have already thought of this. So it didn't even cut the contaminates in half. Still a lot of yuck. I wonder with your tap water being over 500, would it only reduce it by the same amount, down to 3 hundred and 90 something. That's not very impressive that those only cut the contaminates byy 110ppm, Especially if you're already starting over 500. I actually though this same thing about the water when Winston also got a brain tumor, That it could be the water or something else environmental. Scary stuff. Glad you’re doing well and you look great LFG! Great vid. I just ordered one of these testers

      Xbridgeman1975x My county water is unbelievably fowl, to the point that I don't like to shower here and I give my pets bottled water.... the Brita filters are basically just a charcoal and paper two stage filter, the worse the water is the less effective the filter it is. mine went from a 405 to 315 with the Brita, better, but not something I want to drink or breathe in as steam. They are more for removing things to make it more palatable I think.

      Brita SUCKS........I can tell you that right now friend. Made in CHINA.......and Brita does NOTHING to filter out deadly long-term consumption chemicals like FLUORIDE, CHLORINE, OR EVEN BACTERIA. We buy direct from a company called "CLEARLY FILTERED". This company and only a few others have their HIGH-TECH filters made from the same industry-leading facility, and 100% MADE IN THE USA. "Clearly Filtered" also provides continuously up-dated govt certified INDEPENDENT LAB TESTING RESULTS for the performance of their filters. Buy direct online from "Clearly Filtered". Their pitcher/system that includes the 1st filter only costs between 65 to 69 dollars with FREE SHIPPING. NO "AUTO-SHIP" NECESSARY. After that, the filters only cost about $42 each, and a family of 4 need only replace them about 4 times a year........a couple need only replace 3 times per year. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THEM. I am in no way affiliated with the company..........only an extremely satisfied customer. NO MORE EXPENSIVE BOTTLED SPRING WATER. You can't PAY ME to drink un-filtered city tap water from ANYWHERE in America. FLUORIDE ALONE, DAMAGES YOUR NERVOUS SYSTEM & BRAIN. FACT. Hope this helps. God Bless-

      Brita filters basically treat the water for taste only. They esentially remove the majority of the chlorine in the water and some other suspended or dissolved solids by using activated carbon. They do not suck they actually work quite well in doing what they are designed to do.

    Interesting home experiment! Many people do not realize that using fertilizer and pesticides on their lawns and gardens can affect the surrounding water quality. Also TDS doesn't necessarily measure chemicals such as arsenic which is why it may have been so low for the last pond.

    It really is a ton of variables that go into it. Some of the stuff added in the processing is what keeps it readily available for everyone because it's unreal how much is used in an hour even on smaller systems. Lol years of experience with water treatment for county.

    • @25Patman
      @25Patman 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am sure the EPA has some mandates that actually introduce bad things to the water to begin with. Chemicals that they force into the system. You must be able to filter out things such as flouride and any chemicals that are from pills dumped in the toilet system.

    • @lancehoward1802
      @lancehoward1802 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Anything added is to help with more serious problems. Even then there are maximum allowable amounts and most systems stay well below that number. There are plenty that don't but water, and it's problems, are different across the country. The EPA are very quick to shut the ones that don't comply down. Ps the water systems are constantly checking the water and the computers automatically send in all the numbers.

    • @lancehoward1802
      @lancehoward1802 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Which the pills thing is a problem because people really shouldn't just flush them. Some are ok but many are not. Can always check but it's enough pill drop offs now it's really the best way to dispose of them.

      Very, very true. However, measurably-high TDS can be indicative of other contaminants such as cyanobacteria though. If those silicate or other particles can get through well filtration, so can smaller contaminants.

    Total dissolved solids does not measure suspended particulate matter or "contaminants". It primarily measures dissolved inorganic stuff like salts and minerals such as sodium, chloride, sulfate, calcium, magnesium, etc. Not really a measure of contamination since these are generally safe and normal at various levels. The ocean TDS is over 35000 mg/L due to SALT not contaminants. Normal perfectly safe drinking water sources vary from 200-700 mg/L depending on the region and source. Measure your tap water again then add a spoon full of salt and remeasure it. The TDS will go way up due to salt dissolving into it but the water will not be any more contaminated than before.

    For about a year I worked for a company that has the water filtration devices that are in a lot of Wal-Mart stores. If you have ever seen one of the bottled water displays and machines where you can buy water by the gallonin Wal-Mart, that is the company I worked for. My job was to service these systems monthly, checking the TDS and changing the reverse Osmosis filters when they needed it. I still have a few of the testers and I checked our tap water and was amazed at how dirty our tap water was. Even more astonishing was how dirty many of the bottled waters were. Our tap water is in the low 300's and many of the cheeper bottled water registered in the upper 300's to lower 400's. So buyer beware, and it is a great idea for home owners to have a TDS tester just to be safe.

    another possible source for the high TDS in your tests could actually be soaps from the containers that you are testing in. If you're worried about it you can send your water into a lab for a mass spec testing to see if it's just a high mineral content or possible chemical content. I work with water filtration for a living and have to do a ton of testing and those TDS pens are great for getting a rough idea of quality but further testing is definitely needed.

    So I use to get my water tested on a semi annual basis. The test I had done samples went to a lab then a couple weeks later I would get the test results. It would break down everything from calcium to agriculture contaminants etc. I would highly recommend getting tests done like that.

    Those container filters are usually worse over time because the tap can get mold in it, if you're serious about drinking good water continually pay for bottled water or get at least a 5 stage reverse osmosis under faucet filter (I recommend ispring brand on Amazon because I have it and know it works but I believe apec and a couple other brands are very good as well).

    I'm a Environmental Engineer and do extensive water testing both potable water sources and groundwater monitoring wells. Like said, TDS can be any of a multitude of things most are harmless. If you want to know whats in your water, your water supplier is required by law to publish the water tests performed on your water supply in an annual report. Most are posted online by your water supplier (municipality). If they aren't online you can contact the vendor and they will have them available. If you are on well water, you should take a sample to your local water lab and run a full drinking water parameters test (the full list will run you a few hundred bucks). You can then compare them to the EPA drinking water standards for each item.

    I used to work at a pool store and we did water tests all the time. The TDS in the water is, like you said, what can make your body have a tough time handling it if the levels are too high. A lot of that, though, especially in Texas, is most likely just minerals that make the water hard. TDS doesn't really show "contaminants" as much as other tests do. I wouldn't necessarily be as concerned about TDS as I would other chemicals and bacteria, but you could probably find good ways to test those too. Dang Texas water.

    I bought a house built in 85 in July and it included a free water test survey. It was pretty much so I could buy a whole filtration system for the house. Although after seeing it was going to cost about 10K I said no, but it still freaked me out what the results showed and what the tester/sales person had to say. Keep in mind he was trying to sell me the system so that in turn makes it somewhat hard to believe, but not saying it isn’t true. Our tap water level was so high. I don’t remember the exact number but it was through the roof. He then showed us how our body absorbs the chemicals by taking the tap water and having us gurgle it in our mouth for about 30 seconds then spit back out. Wow the levels dropped from the Original high reading. He says our bodies will absorbs whatever chemicals are in the water. He said think about when you shower, when you brush your teeth, when you use water to cook. All those chemical are being absorbs from all those things and the only way to prevent that was with a whole water house filtration system. He explained a lot more stuff, and if your interested I can let you know what exactly happened. It still freaks me out honestly. Thanks for the vid 👍🏼

    Hey I use a TDS meter to test my Dionazation tanks while cleaning windows here in Austin Baby!!! And the water coming out of that tests at 0 PPM! God bless Justin and Stephanie glad to see how well you are recovering! Gonna be ripping lips in no time!

      LakeForkGuy Yeah that sounds about right! My tap doesn't taste too great. But those tanks filter the water through some strong chemicals causing the water to be non-potable. So although 0 PPM sounds delicious it's actually NASTY!

    TDS at my house reads 113 at the kitchen sink and 111 at a bath room sink. I had a 210 gallon reef tank a few years ago and had to buy a reverse osmosis system because coral needs the purist water to thrive.
    I belonged to a reef tank club and we all shared our TDS found in our drinking water. The results some came up with were unreal. The highest was 1200! They were actually told to not drink their water by the city.
    Although TDS readings don’t tell the whole story, go with your gut on this one. I believe you’re initial repulsed reaction is right on the money.
    I live in Elk Grove, Calif. A suburb of Sacramento. The highest readings came from those living in the city.

    Electrofishing...........love your channel. Conductivity readings as an indicator for TDS probably wont help answer anything about the real contaminants, but if you get into electrofishing , the device will be valuable in setting up you machine to match the conductivity of the water. Did you test Post Oak Pond?.......Keep up the healing and the good work!

    My family purchased a zero water pitcher and we were impressed with the flavor. We eventually noticed that the water smelled like canned tuna. We did a little research and found that zero water filters are susceptible to mold growing inside the filter.

    I have an RO unit for my saltwater aquarium. It has a TDS inline tester and it will register 480 to 640 in and 6 to 15 out. It is super flat tasting but is great for the coffee maker and cooking. It is not necessarily the best for drinking but tastes better than the city water. I know my dog prefers tap water and will not drink the RO.

    I feel that there is a correlation between water and tumors. I used to live in the city and constantly drunk tap water then i moved to a farm house and the water here is from a well. Well about a few months here and both my and my older sister formed benign tumors.

    You should have a chemical analysis break down of what is in your H2O. Most of the dissolved solids in tap water are salts and minerals. Do you have a water softener? Salt.

    I'm hardly a chemist or anything of the sort, but shouldn't you re-establish your control model after every test? If you test each sample right after the previous without a reset, don't we risk false positive? Recently new subscriber here. Great videos. A certain model I'm attempting to follow! Keep up the great work! Btw... glad you are healing up well.

    LFG first I want to say that I have been following your channel for some time and really enjoy watching your vids. In a previous position I was involved in water distribution for a number of years. I highly recommend you contact your local water system and request they come and take a sample of your water to be lab tested just to see what kind of results they provide you. Most municipalities will perform this for free if you contact them and complain about bad tastes, smell etc. A question you may also ask is what disinfection method is used for your drinking water e.g. Chlorine, chloramines, UV etc.

    Also make sure you are checking the cold water. Water from a water heater tank will most likely be higher. Maybe try letting the cold water run for a few minutes to flush out the pipes then check again. Just an idea.

    I would have someone professionally test your water. In Washington it use to be about $70 to have it done. Also you should look into a sand charcoal filter system. I have worked in a few water treatment plants and have been told that a sand and charcoal filter can purify Hanford nuclear water to cleaner than what Costco bottled water is sold at.

    A note when testing water. Over time in any house new or old; the faucets screens will collect contaminates. Certain typed algae will grow in them, minerals, and or types debris will accumulate over time. This also includes the kitchen sprayer. These should at least be cleaned, or better yet removed when testing water. How ever to get definitive results you should have a a professional lab test the water ( this is recommended by the EPA).

    I work with a residential and commercial water treatment/filtration company. TDS wont give you a true hardness reading. If you know your area has a high concentration of calcium, magnesium,or iron, thats mainly what the TDS meter is counting for every ppm. But Regardless, get yourself a water softener, air injection oxidizing system, and of course, a reverse osmosis system to remove most of the impurities from the water. The R.O. will handle dissolved solids and chemicals that have been introduced to the water. Also changing out valves and fixtures would help with keeping the number down due to build up. Not much you can do with the piping though.

    There is a lot of more testing than a tds. A tds is mostly for hardness. It does not test for pesticides or toxins. And you should let your water run for a min. To get a good reading. Depending what pipes you have. We test for ph, orp, and conductivity. As well as total chlorine and free chlorine.
    But glad to see you are doing good. 👍👍

  • @Grogers70426

    That's very scary that your tap water is higher than the EPA standards. I have well water in my house and I'm sure that it has contaminates in it due to runoff from when it rains and other stuff. I'm definitely gonna have to pick up one of those testers bc now I'm wondering bc our house was built around the 60s and I don't think that the pipes have been changed, I typically drink bottled water and/or Gatorade instead of from the tap.

    The sediments in the pond is settled in the bottom that is why the reading is less than the tap water while the kitchen tap water is higher because the sediments in the faucet is being mixed with the water because the pressure of the water is pushing out all the sediments out try to clean the filter of your kitchen faucet and I'm sure the reading will be a lot less
