    Fender FRONTMAN 10G

    Awesome - and that you did it with 4 different guitars is even better. Thanks a lot. By the way, great and tasteful playing! Regarding the guitars, I was surprised about how much more I liked the ES-175 compared to all the other three guitars (including the L-5). So my favorite setup was the Fender '68 CUSTOM PRINCETON in combination with the ES-175. What a great comparison !

    That DV MK Little Jazz had the most accurate classic jazz sound...very much like Wes Montgomery tones...it even tamed the Telecasters inherent shrillness :)
    Add in the super portability, the price and overall feature set and we have a clear winner IMO :)

      The JC amps are pretty flat and nothing special it's the chorus effect that makes them sought after if your into that sort of thing apart from that the 40 sound a lot like Peavey Bandit just a standard clean Ampthill 120 just has more bass.

    Great video, thank you! The Strymon sounds much clearer in my ears. If that is a good thing is up for debate, but in a full band mix I would imagine it would break through better. All in all, the difference is not huge and therefore I will get the Strymon since I'm lazy.

    This is a very well recorded, well played, all-encompassing amp comparison if I've ever heard one. Thank you for including the amp settings! Do you remember at which wattage did you set the Blues Cube's power control? Even if I've owned an Artist model for just about 4 years now, I'm still impressed at how well they do Tweed sounds (the Telecaster part reminded me of early 60s Grant Green).
    I'm also surprised by what the ZT Lunchbox can do by itself, for such a small and flat-sounding amp. I see why people like Nels Cline, Jeff Parker and Julian Lage love them.

    • @nikujagi
      @nikujagi  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks for a comment! The BC's POWER CONTROL wattage was 45W. I really like the Blues Cube, it has less noise and sounds great. Lunchbox is also my favorite. It's really great for Jazz.

    ‘68 Custom Princeton Reverb, and even the little Frontman 10G, were most articulate and balanced for the lead and rhythm track. The rest, except the Strymon, were boxy and flat. I almost bought a DV Little, glad I didn’t. Amps I use? Vintage (real)1968 Pro Reverb, my home-built 5f4 Tweed Super and a Fender Vibro Champ XD for convenient practice.

    Very nice video! I have the Little Jazz and a Deluxe Reverb and play them both with a 335 and a Tele and they both sound great for jazz. I'm though extremely positively surprised with the Little Jazz, which can actually sound very fat and warm for its size. It's also surprisingly loud and has good bass response. I got mine used for 250€ which is truly a bargain. The only amp I'm missing in your demo is a Quilter, maybe the Micro Pro 8". 👍💪

    Recordings on all amp are awesome! I think for recording purpose they all sounds great.
    But for me I only has Iridium and use it as my only amp (include practice with it with direct to interface and output from my monitor) I wonder how big the different you feel from the iridium and other tube amps/Solid-state amps? I was afraid of if I change to the real amp in the future, my feeling/response of playing will be a problem(because the used to fake amp).

    • @nikujagi
      @nikujagi  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thanks, J C.
      In my opinion, the difference is not obvious when listening to a recorded sound, but there is a big difference when playing in real time.
      Real amps have a sense of air and the direct feelings of performance. The iridium has a slightly weaker sense of the rawness of the sound and the direct response of the performance.
      Of course, if listening to the recorded sound, the iridium has nuances that are very close to those of a real amp, but it has a virtual impression rather than the raw sound you can experience with a real amp.

    Helpful video! I understand Fender Princeton and DV Mark Jazz 12 were you favorites. Between the Fender Blues Junior (tube), DV Mark Little Jazz (solid state) and ZT Amp Lunchbox (solid state), which do you prefer out of these three? I had heard that the Fender Blues Junior may "distort too early" for jazz. What do you think?

    • @nikujagi
      @nikujagi  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you, seanrockon.
      Of those three amps, if only in terms of the sound, I prefer Fender Blues Junior. Bass sounds weak in this video, but it's actually very well balanced. If adjust Volume and Master well, it won't be distorted. The disadvantages of BJ are that it is noisy and heavy.
      About DV Mark Little Jazz and ZT Amp Lunchbox, the advantage of these amps is that they are light in weight and very portable. The sound is very clean(never distort) and has a modern jazz feel to it. I don't dislike these amps either. Lunchbox sounds nice, but it has no reverb, which is a disadvantage.

    what would you recommend between the dv12 and blues jr for at home as well as gigging

    • @nikujagi
      @nikujagi  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Choose Blues Jr if you like a bluesy, dirty sound. If you like a sound that emphasizes the midrange, choose DV12. DV12 is also important in that it does not distort the sound when the volume is turned up. I bought a Henriksen amp after making this video and am very satisfied with it. If you can afford to buy a Henriksen amp, don't hesitate to choose Henriksen.

    Ain’t it funny. The Princeton sounds best, and the DV 2nd best, on the first three guitars… but with the final one (ES-125), neither sounds that good! They both distort. I suppose the lesson is that no one amp is best; you kinda have to match the amp to the guitar

    I'm intrigued how these amps differ in the feel.. (PRRI is so expensive and bouncy with the tube rectifier).
    What did you feel playing these?
    The amps sounded different with solid body vs hollowbody (great idea to include both)
    ------Thoughts when played through the Tele ---------
    Princeton - Nice chime, soft feel and extended bass; almost felt like a bass playing in the background
    Blues Jr - Ugh, middy / thin and too bright (most displeasing) [I skipped through everytime]
    Blues Cube Stage - Thought it was supposed to be a tweed amp (didn't have the low mids I expected).. balanced overall and sounded just fine
    DV Mark Jazz 12 - Boy, they know what jazz cats like (sounded fuller & rounder with low mids but still retained clarity) Nice fast response & no piercing highs; great overall
    DV Mark Little Jazz - Nice tone but can feel it's a small speaker especially because of the muffled lows (sounds boxy/small) / still warm though
    ZT Lunchbox - More mid forward than the Little Jazz but had nice bass response and clarity (still sounded small, being small)
    Strymon Iridium - Nice bass response / warm with clarity / lead sounded very mid forward (maybe because the 'room' knob was at zero)
    Frontman 10G - haha.. literally in my face / No bass / sounded the smallest (Thankfully there's a point in buying better amps)
    Depending on the guitar, sometimes the smaller amps helped with the overwhelming bass from the hollowbodies..
    Nice playing & walking bass lines, btw
    Also, you managed to bring out the shortcomings of the smaller amps/cabs, kudos!

      @nikujagi  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for a great comment!
      All of your thoughts are very much on point.
      Blues Jr sounds nice and balanced when I actually play it (I use it occasionally for live performances), but on this recording, it sounded lacking in the mid to low frequencies.
      It's just my personal opinion, my favorites are Princeton and DV Mark Jazz 12.
      I feel they both have great clean tones and are great for playing jazz.

    • @vaibhavjoshi9141
      @vaibhavjoshi9141 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nikujagi You're welcome!
      The Princeton and the Mark Jazz 12 are the best out of the group for sure.
      The Princeton has a tube rectifier as well and I've read it's spongy and bouncy, typical of tube amps I guess.
      Is the DV Mark stiffer?
      DV Mark being an SS amp, how does the FEEL differ from the Princeton?

    • @nikujagi
      @nikujagi  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@vaibhavjoshi9141 Princeton gradually begins to drive the sound as I turn up the volume, but the DV Mark is clean with no drive.
      Some people prefer a slightly drived sound.
      DV Mark has a strong midrange sound, which is great for jazz. DV Mark is also very light in weight.
      I feel Princeton to be the more natural sounding guitar amp, but both of these amps sound great.

      The Stage is negatively affected by the absence of the Artist model's presence knob, in my opinion. I use it on my Artist to balance a round and punchy Tweed sound in order to avoid getting into mushy or trebly territory. It was often dialed around BASS 3-4 / MID 7-8 / TREBLE 5-6 (cutting it under 5 starts badly affecting the mids in my experience) / PRESENCE 6-7 (sometimes 4 with treblier settings or 8 with bassier settings). A Roland rep once told me the Stage and Hot have their presence set on 9 by default. Personally, having it perpetually on 9 would make it a pain the dial out unneeded high-end for older forms of jazz. I wonder if 肉じゃぎ had a similar experience.
      That being said, I was gifted a Sparkle Clean tone capsule that turned the Blues Cube into my favorite amp. It now has the warmth and harmonics of my Ampeg VT-40, the solid state percussiveness of a JC-120 I used in the past, and is much flexible in its settings than the initial Tweed circuit. Most useful reverb I ever had in an amp too (I never was a spring reverb fan, to be fair).
      The Princeton comes off really well here, it's easy to understand why Fender amps are dominating the market to this day. I really like the DVs too, but after playing a few of these amps a few years ago, they have an overly compressed feel that can sometimes get in the way. I also wonder how much the ZT could benefit from being connected to a larger cab. It sounded flat but just extended enough frequency-wise to be very useful. ZT seem to engineer their products incredibly well.
