Should you allow someone to lay hands or pray over you as a Catholic?

  • Do you realize that a demon can transfer from one person to another through the laying on of hands?
    In this video, I share why you should be cautious of allowing a lay person who has ZERO authority over to to lay hands their hands on you or pray over you.
    Stepping outside of our authority as lay Catholics is DANGEROUS and should be avoided.
    👉🏼Share your thoughts with me in the comments.
    This video we talk about the idea of laying hands on or over someone who IS NOT under your authority
    We must be careful as the laity not to engage in behaviors or thinking that blurs the lines of authority between us and the ordained. Authority keeps us safe. When we step outside of authority (🫣I am looking at you Eve) we are vulnerable and the enemy is always at the ready waiting for us to be unprotected. Resist him.

    “The breaking of rights and casting out/away of evil spirits is generally referred to as “spiritual warfare” or deliverance work. Deliverance prayers should only be used by someone trained and approved to do so. Catholic laity are not to pray “over” (or lay hands on) another person, they can pray for that person only. There are exceptions to this when someone has been deemed to have a charism for deliverance work and has permission. A special ritual within the Catholic Church, called exorcism, is done by priests with the permission of their Bishop for cases of full possession only.”

    About ten years ago I was a parishioners at a Charismatic Catholic Church which brought in Theophostic Prayer Ministry (a Protestant based) into the parish and there was a great deal of this placing of the hands on fellow parishioners for "Spiritual healing especially traumatic ones". The pastoral director and fellow group of priest advocated for this. When I discovered it was protestant based I made a decision to leave this particular church. To be fair much of these prayer was with asking the intercessory from Jesus if it matter. Left the Church for couple years and joined a different parish later while still searching for authenticity and answers about what was happening to our church. What a blessing it is to have Fr, Ripperger he explained much of this in one of his conferences. It truly opened my eyes to the legality of the spiritual world. Great post, Deena!!! It triggered memories for me and my journey.

    A lay person should never place their hands on another person to pray over them. As far as confronting the demonic , that should only be done by a priest preferably an exorcist. What I have found in healing ministry is that very often there are deep woulds that can be healed through intercessory prayer and anointing with blessed oil. The demonic cling to wounds, when these wounds are healed or at least partially healed the demonic has less to cling to. It can be the beginning of a deliverance. Following that up with deliverance with a priest / exorcist can be extremely fruitful. The healing portion should be discerned and confirmed by a priest that the healing Charism is authentic and should work in the confines if the ministry of the exorcist whom the faithful are supporting and working with.
    Deliverance is always a group effort. The laity have a role , but it is never to confront the demonic head on by themselves. The authority is Christs authority that has been given and works through a priest/ exorcist. Any exorcist who is wise will tell you that the worst mistake they could possibly make is to begin to think that they are the one casting out demons. It is Christ through the exorcist.
    I would also note the ministry of Baptism in the Holy Spirit in the Charismatic sense. In this case they are no confronting demons , rather it is intercessory prayer in which people will pray over others to receive the Holy Spirit in a new way. But to lay hands in a person as a priest would , or to confront demons head on is never a good idea for any lay person to do . There are different gifts, and different ministries, but the lay person can never take the place of the authority given to the priest over the demonic realm.
    This women os right, it can be extremely dangerous and open not only you up bit your whole family up to unwanted activity.
    But again , there are other ministries were a lay person does pray over others, but even in those the person should never impose hands the way a priest would.

      It is amazing the number of people who go with the me-myself-and-I belief when it comes to church teachings. "Well, I don't think it is wrong." Talk about the slippery slope which brings to where we are with many catholics becoming nothing more than protestant-catholic at best

    Deena, this video has really concerned me. At our church on the women's retreat, we like to pray for each other in small groups where the woman desiring prayer sits in the center and asks for prayer over what she needs help with or her life situations. We always felt that it was a comforting and supportive gesture for the women who were praying with and for her to put a hand on her shoulder. Is this the same thing you are talking about? We are not commanding demons or anything, just sharing prayer. Again, is this situation out of our authority?

    • @ACatholicWife
      @ACatholicWife  2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @Joanie Rauch I think it’s concerning what you’ve shared.
      Spiritual Authority matters and when we as the laity step outside of authority (praying over or laying hands on someone we have zero authority over) we can invite diabolical consequences to our actions.
      Be careful.
      The laity have no business acting in a way that mimics the priesthood - especially over someone who isn’t under your authority.
      I highly recommend reading Fr. Ripperger’s book Dominion.
      amzn.to/3rdTKbg
      In the description box of this video are several resources.
      From Jesse Romero who has done work in this area:
      For someone that you come in contact with (in public) that needs prayer:
      1) don't put your hands on their hand (because they are not under your spiritual authority) and don't put your hands on their body (there could be a diabolical transference).
      2) You can place a crucifix (or other sacramental) on their shoulder or neck (thats why I always carry a blessed St Benedict Crucifix with me). Or have them hold your crucifix and just gaze upon it.
      3) Pray a *deprecatory prayer* for them asking "God the Father, Our Lord Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, Our Lady, the Saints, the Angels to heal them and liberate them from any evil.
      The reason we use a sacramental like a crucifix instead of our hands because the sacramental is blessed and gives actual grace, my hands are not blessed (unlike a Priest).
      The only exception is that you can lay hands on your wife and children because they are under your authority, your house is your domestic Church and you are the priest of the home. Over your wife and children you can pray imprecatory prayers: "I bless you in the name of the Father..." or "I command you evil spirit as head of this house to be gone in Jesus name...."
      Over those that are not under your spiritual authority you would have to do a *deprecatory prayer*
      example: "May God bless you in the name of the Father..." or "May Our Lord Jesus Christ drive out any evil spirit that is tormenting you..."

      @@ACatholicWife Ok. Thank you. I guess the confusion is that we never viewed it as "praying over" and never knew there was any authority we were stepping outside of. I saw your reply to Mary Williams regarding praying for those she is giving a massage to. So, in an instance where someone is in your arms needing a hug and a prayer, that would be ok? This is what happens a lot. Thank you for your suggestions.

    • @ACatholicWife
      @ACatholicWife  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @Joanie Rauch praying for other people is what we are supposed to do as faithful Catholics who love the Lord.
      Prayer is powerful and we shouldn’t stop praying.
      What we have to be mindful of is thinking we have authority *over* the person we are praying for.
      All prayers for people who you aren’t directly responsible for should be deprecatory not imprecatory.
      "An imprecatory prayer is one in which *I command* the demons to leave.
      A deprecatory prayer is one in which *I petition* Jesus, Our Lady to drive the demons out.
      If I have authority, I can pray an imprecatory prayer. If I don't then I should pray a deprecatory prayer"
      (Fr Ripperger; "Freedom through Christ - a Catholic approach to Liberation" p.130).

      @Curindu and you had no authority to “pray over” people. I think it’s absolutely reckless when people engage in spiritual warfare without understanding what they’re doing and the ramifications for stepping outside of authority.

    • @161joanie

    • @ACatholicWife
      @ACatholicWife  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @Joanie Rauch I am a firm believer in when we know better we do better and we teach others.
      From Fr. Ripperger:
      “When I was in Omaha as their exorcist, I would regularly have to clean up people who were usually involved in the charismatic renewal. I’m pretty benign to the people in the Charismatic renewal even though I think their formation is flawed, and I think that their theology is Protestant and not Catholic in many ways, which you can see in my forthcoming book at some point about that. I’m about five chapters out left to finish that book. But on charismatic graces and what they are because it’s really misunderstood. But I used to have to clean them up regularly because people would come to me having imposed hands or tried to cast demons out. They were only lay people and they would end up getting taken to the woodshed, and so you’d have to clean them up, and in other places that I’ve talked to, there were places that were doing kind of charismatic things in relationship to how they were trying to heal people and they said, “we’re getting all sorts of retaliation”. So, I’d go there, and I would ask, “okay what are you doing, how are you doing this”. And once I told them stop doing these things, but continue doing these things, or do these other things, once they started doing that, they actually had greater success in their work in helping people to become healed, even though they weren’t overstepping their bounds on the authority issue.”

    In our small parish after communion and before the closing prayers, our priest will ask that anyone who is celebrating a birthday or wedding anniversary to come up for a blessing. He does use Holy Water. However, he does ask the congregation to extend their hands during the blessing. From this video, I am assuming this is still wrong since the congregation extends their hands. Am I correct?

    So question, my mom loves to put the sign of the cross on my family before we leave her house. How do I politely ask her not to without offending her? She attends NO and is already not in agreement with us attending the TLM, even though I’ve asked her and my dad to attend and experience the Mass for themselves before she forms an opinion. I know if I don’t handle this the right way it will make her not like the Tradition even more or even cause a rift between us.

    • @ACatholicWife
      @ACatholicWife  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Ana this is a hard scenario but one that you can easily flip this around from the lens of you offending her to your mother continuing to push her beliefs about your shared faith without concern for how you practice the faith.
      I had an EXTREMELY head strong mother and she could be easily offended.
      Sadly, I am not unfamiliar with this dynamic in a mother/daughter relationship.
      This is a topic that I’ll discuss in a video as words & meaning can get misconstrued in a TH-cam thread.
      I’ll leave you with this to ponder - is it worse to share the truth and possibly offend people or is worse to hold the truth because of the push back/attack/ridicule/judgement we may endure and offend God?
      Be respectful of your mother and father - no doubt.
      But you aren’t a child anymore.
      Their *opinions* should be inconsequential to you and your faith.
      You have your own family to protect and help your husband lead to heaven above all and anyone else.
      What exactly is it that she doesn’t like about the traditions of the Church?

      I highly recommend Fr. Ripperger’s book Dominion. It’ll give you a more comprehensive understanding of spiritual warfare and authority.

      @Judy Graham I’m sorry but I don’t. I found this online and hope it’ll be helpful:
      Rules for the Scrupulous Person to Follow
      1. Do not repeat a sin in confession when it has been told in a previous confession even if you doubt it was told, or doubt it was told in a sufficiently adequate and complete way.
      2. Do not tell doubtful sins in confession, only clear and certain ones.
      3. Do not repeat your penance after confession, or any of the words of your penance, on the score that you were distracted or may not have said the words properly.
      4. Do not worry about breaking your fast before receiving our Lord in Holy Communion unless you actually put food and drink in your mouth and swallow it in the same way you do when you eat a meal.
      5. Do not hesitate to look at any crucifix or statue in church, at home, or anywhere else, for fear that you receive bad thoughts in your mind or imagination. If such thoughts come they are not sinful at all.
      6. Do not consider yourself guilty of bad thoughts, desires or feelings unless you can honestly swear under oath before the all-truthful God that you remember clearly and certainly consenting to them.
      7. Do not disobey your confessor when he tells you never to make another general confession of past sins already confessed.
      8. Act on the belief that whenever you are in doubt as to whether or not you are obliged to do or not to do something; you can take it as certain that you are not obliged.
      9. If, before you perform or omit an act, you are doubtful whether or not it is sinful for you, you shall assume as certain that it is not sinful and shall proceed to act without any dread of sin whatever.
      10. You shall put your total trust in Jesus Christ knowing that He loves you as only God can love, and that He has no intention of letting you lose your soul.
      11. Remember: feelings, impulses and ideas are neither acts of the will nor accomplished facts.
      12. Remember: temptations are not sins. Even Jesus was tempted by the Devil and never sinned.

      Can you recommend a prayer from Father's book that I can pray?

  • @TamGreat

    Deena, I attend a NO church and will be a catechumen this Fall. A young catechumen and his sponsor recently go up to the front and the priest will ask us to pray for him for his journey into the Church. The sponsor will put her hand on his shoulder. Is this okay? And interesting video, I wasn't really aware that was an issue.

      Yes, it should be fine if it was recently, as it is most likely a rite towards baptism for the catechumen called the Scrutinies. (Done in the 3rd, 4th and 5th Sunday of Lent.) The priest had authority and stated prayers of exorcism over the catechumen, it is not the sponsor stating them. (It is a Penitential rite) The sponsor is a representative, right hand, right shoulder, supporting the catechumen. I only suggest it as a possibility as it is the time to have recently completed these rites. As a congregation we are called to pray for those entering the Church. (But hands off if they are not under OUR authority. 😉)

    Can I pray over my sister?

    • @ACatholicWife
      @ACatholicWife  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Sarah Nicholas I would absolutely pray for your sister. Fr. Ripperger says siblings have authority in certain situations.
      I would always advise you to be Cautious.
      I highly recommend this book to get a better understanding of this topic as of pertains to authority:
      Dominion: The Nature of Diabolic Warfare
      amzn.to/3LVSx0O
      If you don’t have authority, you can always modify the prayer to petition Jesus or Our Lady by saying the prayer and invoking Jesus’ Name or Our Lady’s Name.
      Fr. Ripperger advises that you focus on *your own spiritual life* and make sure you’re in a state of Grace before you start to intercede to pray for/over others outside your scope of authority.
      “Whoever acts contrary to the principle of an order is deprived of the effects of that order.”

    Deena, thank so much for sharing! I have a couple of questions:
    Years ago I attended a Catholic church where the priest would performed a healing mass on a monthly basis. After mass there would be ladies that had the chrism (spelling?) if tongues and would lay their hands on and pray over anyone that wanted help. I allowed this many times because of the suffering I was experiencing at the time. I now remember I did participate at least once placing my hands on someone while someone else lead a prayer.
    What do you recommend?
    I will definitely take this to reconciliation but how do I find a priest that will pray a prayer of exorcism over me? Calling my diocese isn’t much help.
    Second question :
    My husband has stopped going to mass. He will be going on a business trip to Las Vegas next week and I had planned on blessing him on his forehead with exorcised holy water (sign of the cross). Do I have the authority?
    Thank you.

    Your parents are allowed to do this however.

    • @ACatholicWife
      @ACatholicWife  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @turn2God not entirely accurate. The laying on of hands would depend on *if* they still had authority. Adult “children” are no longer under their parents authority.

    • @ACatholicWife

      @Mary Williams you can pray for anyone but the problem is when lay people think they have the authority to lay hands on someone and pray over them. That would be completely inappropriate behavior.
