    • @roquefortfiles
      @roquefortfiles 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Morgan Farrelly They're not really waiting for the shark here. More like the speed boat to reposition the towed shark rig. For the towed shark rig to hit various marks at the times it was supposed to. They did it over and over and over. Each time the speed boat towing the sled shark would take 10 minutes to go back to start position. And if it didn't hit the mark on the next take. Start over. Another 15 minutes to reposition. One shot would take an entire day.

    • @roquefortfiles
      @roquefortfiles 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Morgan Farrelly Bill Butler said the shark (Platform) actually worked fabulously. It did everything it was designed to do and functioned very well. The problem is that it only worked about 10% of the time. And it took nearly the entire production for the FX crew to learn how to operate it. They were learning while they were in production.

    Funny pointless factoid: it’s implied through the movie that the fishing boat has some sort of old diesel engine( The sound, the exhaust smoke, the tachometer maxing out at 3000, etc. )but in reality it had an Oldsmobile 455. So in reality, it would have sounded more like a sports car roaring down the road. But I think the “old diesel engine“ is much more fitting

    • @LtHades
      @LtHades 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the information, I was wondering what powered the Orca.
      Edit: But a 455 V8 is 7.5L V8, so that is probably why the engine maxes out at 3000 rpm. It is a big block engine.

      Honestly, it worked out even better that the mechanical shark failed in saltwater. It made the movie more Hitchcock like. We know the shark is there but we can't see him. Best part of the movie was Quint giving his monologue about sharks eating people. That's all you needed and leave the rest for the audiences' imagination

    • @roquefortfiles
      @roquefortfiles 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@christophercory8742 They don't use the mechanical shark to pull the barrel. The platform shark is only used for specific framed shots. The barrels are all pulled through the water by speed boats out of frame. Each shot you see is set up for exactly what takes place. And multiple takes happen for all of them. Over and over. All day long. The scene you are watching here is on screen for 2 minutes. It would take WEEKS to film. Trust me, i work in the industry. I know how long it takes to shoot this stuff.

    For years now the Oscars have only shown us a brief 20 second portion of a scene or even just snippets of a film that totaled 20 seconds when introducing a film nominated for Best picture. But for the longest time when a presenter introduced a film nominated for Best picture the big screen behind them showed a full scene of a film that was pivotal in the film or encapsulated the film. and they did not care if that scene went on for 3 minutes. In early 1976, when it was time for a presenter to introduce Jaws as a film nominated for 1975 Best picture, guess which scene appeared on that giant screen and on our television sets as the pivotal or encapsulating scene? That's right, and they showed all 3 minutes. And every film nominated for Best picture likewise got to show the scene that they felt really made their case. They did not worry about 20 second attention spans.We need to go back to this and stop with some of the other stupid crap they waste time with. After all it's supposed to be about the films.
