Its sad to see CITV closing down. I was born in 2002 and loved watching it in the 00's. I feel like my age group was the last group to grow up before streaming was the norm. Some of my favourite shows to watch were My Parents are Aliens, Horrid Henry, Jungle Run, Art Attack. I will always remember channels like CITV and CBBC. They were my favourite channels as a kid and could watch them for hours.

Damn, that actually sucks for people who grew up with it. It's never fun when part of your childhood dies, but at least it lives on in spirit through ITVX.

As somebody who was an avid CBBC and CITV viewer during the Late 90s through most of the 00s, this saddens me. I feel bad for the kids now, who, because there isn't a dedicated CITV Channel, they won't be able to go to school the next day and have shared experiences, talking about what happened in this or that show, because people can access anything they want whenever. I think this is a huge shame, and CBBC will eventually go the same way. British Children's Programming is effectively being slowly killed off, and it hurts that we're all powerless to do anything about it.

I used to tune into CITV with my Grandpa after school. We'd watch Emu, Bernard's watch and Horrid Henry (amongst other things) - He died in 2013 and now the channel we had so much fun watching is dying too!
It really feels like any remaining childhood memories we had/have are being ripped away in order for the digital age to take over.

However, over the last few years, it’s stopped repeating the shows I remember watching. It’s sad it’s going online only, but that’s how it is these days. I would like to see the older content made available on ITV X. Such as, ZZZap, Art Attack, Bernard’s Watch, Jungle Run and Eliminator.

I think it's a real shame CITV has ended. CITV entertained children in the UK for 40 years. My aunt presented the 6-part documentary series The Ultimate Machine which aired on CITV in May 1987. CITV had a lot of great shows over the years such as Knightmare. Woof. Thomas the Tank Engine. Fun House. Virtually Impossible. Avenger Penguins. How 2 among many others. This is possible a sign that ITV is losing out in a huge way, even if it can still keep channels that BBC now has to axe.
We need to be real and figure out the real issue, TV is being degraded in favor of a service no one really wanted to become the norm.
With TV going obsolete it could ruin the media industry and could put jobs at risk.
All those CITV shows that were around in the years past, unless archived, those show will be lost media and no one will understand what made CITV popular to begin with. its a sad era for sure.

I always thought that it was actually 43 years. CITV originally launched as Watch It! on December 29, 1980, but after the first three years, ITV thought that kids brand title was too lame and was worried that that title would be some ripoff of a Mark Mothersbaugh DEVO song. So on January 3rd, 1983, they changed the name of the network to CITV where it still Stands today.

A compromise might be to rename the channel ITVX Kids, but keep the linear channel going for all the latest stuff and have live elements, interspersed with all the latest cartoons that ITV is allowed to show, but also have a catch-up/on demand area, in case circumstances prevent you from watching it as it goes out - as a boy growing up in the late 60s/early 70s - almost throughout the 70s and into the early 80s - the only option was to tune in as it went out or not see it at all - often missed the repeat as well later in the year or early next year - no catch-up, no on-demand - it took us until around 1983 to get a video recorder - dad thought it would knacker (his word) the telly - finally got one about two years following his death!
Today, it’s almost impossible to miss TV shows that you want to see - some shows are on DVD these days!

I think once children today grow out of CBeebies then they immediately give up on time slot TV and find their own entertainment via TH-cam, TikTok, Netflix, Amazon, iPlayer and Disney+. They also develop a video game addiction, which is universal these days. They won’t transition to ‘traditional’ TV.

I got my first taste of the ITVX service at my mum's house last Christmas. Hopefully they keep much of the kids content on the free side of the paywall. I loved both CBBC & CITV in the mid 90s - mid 00s certainly still gives me the nostalgic feeling surrounding that. Children’s TV back then was so much better than what the kids have the last decade in time. If ever I have kids they would be watching what I’ve grown up with. This has definitely deepened me in sadness, but at least the stuff of old is still out there on YT and other places. Understand the changing habits of streaming all we can do is adapt.

I've been planning my own rant video on this situation but I have a cold right now so I'm not up for a livestream right now and scripting the rant is proving to be difficult but for now I want to say: the streaming market is proving to be a wild west, what with Disney and Paramount putting much of their libraries behind a monthly pay wall and Netflix shooting themselves in the foot repeatedly, not to mention it's not certain that your favorite show will still be available on streaming this time next year! If both Citv AND CBBC close, this'll leave Pop as the ONLY school age kid's channel on Freeview, only other on Freesat alongside Pop MAX! I've been suspicious of ITV not caring about their kid's offering due to Citv being their ONLY channel STILL not available in HD! It saddens me that many parents raise their little ones on mass-produced shit like Peppa Pig and Cocomelon, no disrespect intended but even my own niece relies heavily on those two! Kids deserve better quality entertainment! I've been wanting Channel 4 to re-enter the kid's TV space for YEARS and I feel that if they launch a new kid's channel, it'd fill the void left by CBBC and Citv! Not to mention, such a channel could not only air new shows for today's kids, it could be a place where us adults can re-enjoy favorites from when we were kids, such as Fourways Farm, Tintin, Madeline, Biker Mice From Mars, Earthworm Jim and Johnny Bravo! I'd ESPECIALLY like Channel 4 to BUY OUT Thomas & Friends from Mattel, especially as I've heard NOTHING about whether or not today's kids actually give a shit about All Engines Go, I feel this'd be a BIG opportunity to put the original pre-Gullane Thomas seasons back on TV and pave the way for a reboot that's actually good! The Paddington reboot proves you CAN reboot an existing kid's show and do a good job of it! On the whole, I feel that the streaming wars are getting out of hand, not everyone can subscribe to Netflix, Disney+, Paramount+ and Prime Video all at once, not everyone has good internet access and the recent launch of Sky Kids proves there IS still a place for linear kid's channels on TV!

    • @YujiUedaFan
      @YujiUedaFan ปีที่แล้ว +2

Additionally, streaming services seem to be in some trouble, such as licencing programs to other services because they're not making enough money keeping them in one place or even out-right removing shows that some think aren't worth it. Streaming services when Disney+ first started were seen as a library of content from specific companies, but now it's all falling apart. I know CITV viewership has dropped by two thirds, but the lack of HD options likely helped. Who knows if streaming services will just be a temporary thing and in 20 years time people may even laugh at the concept of them.
When it comes to streaming, there are several huge issues:
      1. Lack of international rights, leaving some services in some countries with a lot more content than others as well as many shows and movies being unavailable.
      2. Very little globalization of streaming services. HBOMax, Hulu and Peacock for example are unavailable in the UK.
      3. Greedy CEOs and corporate managers drastically shifting content so it reflects what they like over variety (David Zaslav and HBOMax).
      4. Brining back ads, despite the lack of ads originally being a huge factor to use streaming services in the first place.
      5. Whatever Netflix is doing with their anti-account sharing nonsense.

I was there for the golden age in the 80s and 90s. Back then most of the content on CITV was made in-house, we had stuff like Knightmare, T-Bag and Count Duckula. I've got a 7 year old now so we do watch the channel occasionally and in recent years it seems to mainly show US imports along with endless repeats of Horrid Henry and Mr. Bean and felt like it was on life support. That said it did seem as if they'd started doing more with it recently, with things like the HOW revival. Also...the kid channel section for Freeview will diminish, I'm pretty sure the only ones that will exist are Pop, Tiny Pop & Pop Max...and if they disappear (which I'm expecting), none will exist. Although, I'm not sure if CBBC will not be staying as their own channels.

I thought I'd be sadder about this to be honest, but thinking back on it, I much preferred CBBC to CITV anyway. It had much more personality. Actual links with presenters (Katie, Cel, Ian, Chris and Karim were my era) and a wider variety of shows as opposed to imported animation. I enoyed shows such as Horrid Henry, My Parents are Aliens and Jungle Run, but that era is long gone. Still weirdly sad to see it go though, I always thought it would last forever as a kid.

The Gas Street Studios and oval log were the end of the strand's golden era and the channel has just kept decreasing in quality for no reason since Art Attack with Neil Buchanan got axed in 2007

Hey, do I remember Neil Buchanan? I would've really wanted to go and see him who did Art Attack and Zzzap! in the 1990s. However, he also did Celebrity Juice, did he ever did a star guest announcer on Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway? Did he or what?

However, I hated the 2-10 series of Zzzap! on CITV which was compared to the original 1997-2001 era of Teletubbies on CBBC and the 4-7 seasons of SpongeBob!😡However, I hated SpongeBob's post-movie voice which was stuck in my head forever and I remember watching Seasons 4-7 which was extremely constipating which I find it so painfully obnoxious for me in which of the new character being replaced by Tricky Dicky was Daisy Dares who does lose the game or either both lose in each episode when she yowls, howls or groans instead of crying which was compared to SpongeBob's screaming, crying, shouting, etc on the post-movie era of SpongeBob!🤬Some movies and TV shows try to be like an episode from the classic era or The Ren & Stimpy Show, but some either get it wrong or failed to try to be like these episodes from those 2 good cartoons by ripping the ideas off from either Ren & Stimpy or the first 3 seasons.😕However, other characters on the show like Cuthbert Lilly, Smart Arty, The Handymen, Tricky Dicky, Minnie the Mini Magician amongst others that become either annoying or cringeworthy to listen to.😠Well to be honest, that I hate watching Horrid Henry and the 1996 era of The Beano's Dennis the Menace on CBBC which were compared to seasons 3-4 of The Ren & Stimpy Show and seasons 4-7 of SpongeBob SquarePants.😠And with that according to Nickelodeon were eventually my 2 cartoony nemesis'!🤬Also, I hated Victor & Hugo and the Avenger Penguins to be honest that they did not really had to show Scoot Penguin, Dr. Von Goosewing, Dimitri, Sviatoslav, Stiletto Mafioso and Ernest Penfold.😟And with that according to ITV Studios they were also my 2 cartoony nemesis also compared to Nickelodeon's season 4 of Rocko's Modern Life, Jay Ward's The Rocky & Bullwinkle Show, DePatie-Freleng's Bailey's Comets and Super President and Hanna-Barbera's The Flintstones, The Jetsons and The Dukes cartoon series.🤬That's why I'm getting EXTREMELY ANNOYED ON MY NERVES OF THEM!!!😤😤😡😡🤬🤬😭😭😱😱

As a 2000s kid, this breaks my heart, I have fond memories watching shows on Citv, TMNT 2003 (the year I was born) My goldfish is evil Vampires pirates and aliens, Gormiti: The Lords of Nature Return Wolves witches and giants and Grizzly tales for Gruesome kids, Jungle run Supernormal and Art Attack, Planet sketch and Atomic Betty Fleabag Monkeyface and Captain mack and my parents are aliens, Canimals The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot about that and sooty, Bernard's watch Bookaboo and Bakugan (OG).
The whole list speaks for itself, but It not just me who will miss Citv but also everyone who is born in 2000s and 1930s. RIP CITV, you were the best tv programme the UK has ever had since 1930s.

It’s sad that it’s closing, I used to love citv when I was a kid especially in the mid 2000s but I think it’s a good decision to shut down the channel because I had a feeling that it was going to shut down. Rip citv.

I haven't watched CITV in years, but it does hurt when part of your childhood dies (the closure of CITV, CBBC and the Disney Channels.)
Also, the pre-school programming have been on ITVBe for a while now.
The only free children's channels left are Cbeebies and Pop.

As you say, A vast majority of kids consume their content on a tablet via youtube, tiktok etc. Linear TV, Just like legacy media (newspapers etc) Is a dying format. We have television via an antenna here but it is only used in emergencies. Most of our content is consumed via a nas drive filled up with classic 70s and 80s tv shows! It costs us nothing per month!

I think if kids can find a streaming service, they can find itv2, and TH-cam.

Having first watched this video in around March 2023, I think we can be absolutely sure that we'll never see or hear CITV again. R.I.P, CITV Channel - 2006 - 2023.

I think it is the right decision to permanently close CITV down in September 2023, because as we continue to move towards a more streaming service format, we just have no choice but to adapt to this kind of mode of life.
R.I.P, CITV. 1983 to 2023 (as a British TV channel)

My biggest concern about these channels closing down is for the children with parents who don't supervise the content their children watch enough. For those who do not pay for screaming services and use freeview TV, often times the main content their children will watch will be TH-cam, and without childrens channels, they'll watch TH-cam even more. As the stuff on there isn't monitored like TV is, I can see kids seeing all sorts of content they shouldn't if their parents aren't watchful enough.

I grew up watching this channel. I will miss it so much. Even though I am now almost an adult and I no longer watch this channel, I will watch the channel’s final closedown in Autumn to give my childhood a final send off.

As somebody who was born in 2008 I am VERY annoyed by this, I remember watching Horrid Henry on CITV with my older sister when we were both little and (I still watch Horrid Henry lmao).
My older sister is now 18 and she will be 19 on the 12th of April and I'm now 14 and I will be 15 on the 5th of July, I feel sorry for the kids of today.

@@FiremanSamBoy2008 So do I. I feel sorry for TV viewers in general. CITV, CBBC and BBC Four are all going.
CBBC timeshares with BBC Three while BBC Four timeshares with CBeebies. I wonder what will happen to those channels on-air hours-wise once CBBC and BBC Four shut down. Will BBC Three go 24 hours? We will have to wait and see.
