While listening to the stereo record player (with right and left speakers), it's imitating what your ears pick up if you were sitting directly in front of a live performance -- who is closer to your right ear, who is closer to your left. In the 60's, stereo recordings were brand new - previously they'd all been mono, and while it was brand new, artists and engineers played around with the effect of putting different instruments/voices across the left-right spectrum. It sounds quite strange now to have different instruments on the left and right to our ears these days, but back in the day it was an opportunity for folks to full experience their new 2 speaker systems.
