I finally understood the line about --people danced to the sound of your heart the world sang along to it falling apart- .. whenever he sang “for him” people went crazy while they didn’t know what was going on 😭 and in the end, the same song which was a gift for Connor turned into a reminder of what they no longer had. I think this is one of the saddest break ups ever (and to this day we don’t know why)

I hated it when it came out because I thought it was cruel of him to lay it all out there like that. Like we know who he became and we saw the sad change in Connor but to explicitly say you got the good side and not even let him pretend to be fine, I thought that was too much. But it has been a while and we can see they are both moving on from it and I come to appreciate the way he wrote this song. It’s simple and sincere, none of the flairs other songs in this album have. It’s a genuine apology and I respect that.

I would've been quite offended if my ex assumed these things, thinking that I'm not doing fine just because he's doing fine. I don't know, guess it's my ego but I truly feel like this is insulting. I know that Troye's intentions might've been good but the other person may not feel like it. It could potentially feel humiliating. Idk, seems a bit naive and self centered. But them again I know nothing about their situation and so on, this is just me projecting. ^^
He probably wrote the song knowing how Connor was doing. When I had my major break up, my ex knew I was a total wreck, our friends in common told him the mess I had become. In my case, my ex got the good side and when I listen to this song I feel like it's him apologizing for that. He didn't have to assume I was in shambles, he actually knew it.

I don't think that it's mean-spirited at all and if you would've found it helpful then Connor might've as well. Ugh I'm relating to this song so hard today. I just got out of my first serious relationship a couple months ago. This person was my first experience with love and I was with them for almost 5 years. The part that kills me the most is "so many thoughts I wanted to share, but I didn't call cause it wouldn't be fair". It's so hard when this person has been my go to to share every thought I have for the past 5 years of my life. It's a disheartening and heartbreaking feeling when you no longer have that. I don't know if I got the good side of MY breakup, but I am blessed with a wonderful support network and I'm so thankful for that, and thankful that I have music like this to get me through it.
