      Remember when you switch to natural gas, it will lose a lot of the wattage. I’ve been looking at some different generators that produce around 10k watts with gas and may go as low as 7.5k watts for natural gas.

    Thank you for the video. There are two issues that should be covered. There needs to be a generator interlock kit in the service panel. to prevent the line power and the generator from being on at the same time. Secondly it is not recommended to leave the generator power cord coiled. The cord could overheat and be damaged.

    We have used the th-cam.com/users/postUgkxOTeIs0vv4_9B5hsmnLsk9r930uDQLu_Y for probably 30 hours with our camper and it’s been great! The noise level is really only noticeable when running the AC and other appliances like the microwave, hair dryer, or coffee pot. It’s not huge like other ones and it has wheels so even at 90lbs, I can move it!

    I would recommend installing a Generator Interlock Kit on your panel. It may be a legal requirement depending on your local codes. It will also prevent killing a lineman working on the grid if you should happen to forget to disconnect your main breaker while running the generator.

      Won’t “kill a lineman” they are always supposed to ground the line before working it. An ATS or interlock is important tho, and without it you are back feeding your neighbors, so your generator will fail trying to power THIER houses.

    I have the Honda 7000 (5500 sustained) and it works for me the same way. My A/C is only a 2 ton but I have the same soft starter (smaller model). Mine has the same starting amps, but draws about 6 amps continuous when running. With the inverter power everything is rock solid in the house unless we turn on the electric stove. you can see a faint flicker in the lights every time the element (3500W!!!) kicks on. but I can cook with the A/C running without fear of overloads!

    One important thing to do is never coil your electric extension.
    When the cord is in a coil it will heat up the higher the amp draw is.
    Make a dedicated cable to go from the generator to the house input.
    I learned this lesson first hand when my coiled cable melted.

      ⚠️Please don’t forget to follow the generator safety tips:
      All generator safety rules need to be followed carefully whenever you use your portable generator. This is a reminder.
      1) KEEPING OTHERS SAFE: Please do not allow an unqualified person or your children to operate and service the portable generator. Just because some manuals don’t say that doesn’t mean it’s safe. That is important against the generator safety rules. We also need to be keeping an eye on our children too. You need to make sure that your children are not playing near the portable generator especially when it’s running so they won’t get electrocuted. Generators pose electrical risks and they can be hot during an operation. Please keep your children away from the portable generator at all times. It is important to keep our children safe especially our little ones. Be aware of all the hazards.
      2) WHERE TO RUN YOUR GENERATOR: Some people use their portable generators indoors which increases the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. It’s important to have a carbon monoxide if you have a gas generator. Never ever use your generator indoors even if your doors and windows are open and even in the garage is not safe to use a portable generator. Not even at your porch and your deck. It is never safe to use your generator indoors and in enclosed areas of your home. Your generator needs to be 15-20 feet away from your house.
      3)🔥FIRE HAZARDS: Never refuel your generator while it’s running. You need to let your generator cool off before refueling it and before storing your generator. Never overload your generator too. Never ever back feed your generator. You should never plug your generator into a wall outlet. Also never store propane tanks indoors. Please keep flammable things away from the generator as well and please don’t smoke cigarettes near the generator. Having a fire extinguisher next to the generator is also important against the generator safety rules.
      4) GENERATOR OPERATION: make sure your hands are dry before touching the generator. Never use your generator in wet conditions. Don’t let your generator get wet. You need a generator tent if you need to use your generator during wet weather. Please don’t wear loose clothes when operating the generator. Turn on your generator before plugging in appliances. Use the right cord for your generator. Please do not use worn out cords.

That's not a recommended set up you've got, by the way. You have to have an interlock so you can't back feed to the grid. That could kill a lineman if you flipped one of the breakers the wrong way.

      I wouldn’t do that. Carbon monoxide isn’t called the silent killer for no reason. Unfortunately theft is something we can’t avoid. Maybe chaining the unit to a eye that has been set in concrete would give some added deterrence. I heard a story about a thief that came with a lawn mower and swapped it in place of the generator so that no one would hear the generator turn off and wake the people sleeping in the house…… Pretty clever, I think that when security comes to mind you gotta think how a thief would steal your unit with limited time and tools. Thanks for the comment.

    For a 7500 running watt inverter generator that is capable of 120/240 volts is pretty good bang for the buck in the $2k range. I was fortunate to qualify on their financing to break it down to 3 years same as cash helping to take the sting out of the cash flow, but it is worth it. I can start up my 2.5 ton hvac unit at full rpm mode and once it is up to speed, I can put in economy mode. The Micro-air soft start units are a great add-on if you're replacing the outside unit anyway or if it is less than 5 years old. In my case, I really can't justify the $400 price tag on a 16+ year old outside condensing unit; I might as well put that cost towards installing a single or multi-head mini-split heat pump.
    For the time being I just need to manually prioritize my energy usage which not too bad for a single person. I got by for the past 8 years on the 3500 inverter generator; got lights, a cold fridge/freezer, and a fan. This definitely a major upgrade; now I got lights, a cold fridge/freezer, hvac, and electric hot water!

      Don’t forget about the generator safety rules: anyone who uses portable gas generators really needs to see this safety reminder. All generator safety rules should be followed carefully. This advice is just to make sure that everyone is aware of all the warnings and it’s just to remind people to be careful using portable generators. Generators can be dangerous if not used carefully. Every year, hundreds of people die or get injured when using portable generators due to carbon monoxide poisoning and electrocution. Make sure you are using your generator carefully and keeping others safe as well. There is something very serious that everyone should always be aware of when using generators. Some people do run their generator indoors which is not safe and that increases the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning which can cause death of family and you. Some people run their generator in wet conditions which can electrocute them. Please remember that you should never run your generator indoors. Remember that carbon monoxide is an odorless and colorless gas that you cannot see or smell. Carbon monoxide is a silent killer. Keep that in mind. Make sure your generator is 15-20 feet away from your house and away from doors, windows, and vents. Never use your generator in your porch too. Having a carbon monoxide detector is very important against generator safety. Some people also allow children to go near the portable generator which could pose risks. We need to keep an eye on our children making sure that they are not near the portable generator so they won’t get electrocuted or burned by the generator which is dangerous. A locking enclosure also keeps kids safe. A generator shed might look like a tempting place to explore, or take cover during a game of hide and seek, but a generator is a dangerous piece of equipment that can cause injury. It says on the manual that we should also keep children away at all times from the portable generator to avoid injuries. Please do not allow a child or unqualified people to operate the portable generator. Just because some manuals missed what should be listed doesn’t mean it’s safe to do. Always follow the generator safety rules when using portable generators. Generators pose electrical risks. If you need to use your generator during wet weather, you need a generator tent to protect your generator from getting wet. Don’t let your generator get wet. Keep your generator dry and before using your generator, please make sure your hands and your generator is dry. Do not wear loose clothing when operating the generator. Everything that is said on the generator’s operating manual should not be ignored. Never smoke cigarettes near the generator. Please keep flammable things away from the generator. Never overload your generator too. Your generator can catch fire. Never ever try to plug a generator cord into a wall outlet to avoid back feeding. Back feeding your generator is dangerous. Always turn on your generator first before plugging in appliances and shut off the appliances before turning your generator off. Use a heavy duty cord for your generator and the cord should not be worn out. All the instructions should be followed carefully. Never refuel your generator while it’s running. It can cause fire if fuel spills while your generator is hot. You should turn off your generator and let it cool off before refueling it. Having a fire extinguisher next to the generator is also important. This is only a reminder for everyone’s safety of using generators. Make sure your generator is properly grounded. Having a fire extinguisher next to the generator is also important against the safety rules. th-cam.com/video/I1jT3ANENvI/w-d-xo.html and here is a video more about keeping others safe when using generators and also about our family’s safety. @@The_Happy_Aviation_Enthusiast grounding your generator on a home that has an generator input with an interlocked transfer switch actually will potentially cause a hazardous condition due to it being a non-seperately derived system where the neutral on a 120/240 split phase system is floating. The point where the grounding electrode conductor terminates at the neutral bus bar is at the first point of the utility disconnect. On a locking 30 amp 3-pole 4-wire generator cord carries the required isolated neutral and required equipment grounding conductor to bond the generator to neutral/grounding bus bars in the main service panel. If you ground your generator in that type of situation and there is a fault with the bonding with the grounding electrode; you will have stray current looping between them causing a pretty nasty shock if you complete the circuit unintentionally.
      If it is a standalone operation with a spaghetti model of extension cords running inside your house then grounding your generator is definitely needed. The other option is to install a separately derived system transfer switch where both neutral and grounds are bonded independently one for the utility and one for the generator. The only equipment bonding is common with both utility and generator and the neutrals are isolated from each other. This commonly done mostly in health care facilities and industrial applications. These types of transfer switches start around $2k USD, plus labor to install it.

      ⚠️That is why the generator safety tips should be followed carefully and not be ignored as well:

      I would have to look at model number. It’s a 6 year old unit. At 43 amps it would exceed what the 30amp rating of the single 220v outlet on the generator. In my opinion it most likely would trip the breaker that protects that outlet.

      The soft start kit takes five on/off cycles to learn in order to work best. Test again and maybe the start amps are down. I put one on a new 3 ton Carrier unit and my start amps went from 92 down to 17. Maybe because my unit is new and we let it cycle five times.

      I let it run for 24 hours and checked it again, same reading at 46 amp @ LRA, I picked up the inverter the other day anyway , and ran the 30amp /240 side converted to my 50amp plug on my electrical panel, it ran the whole house in the ECS mode. The math isn’t adding up somewhere, but it works, will be ordering my natural gas kit soon, I know I’ll lose some amp output using natural gas, crossing my fingers that it will work. Super happy with it so far.

    Did you need to ground the generator to connect it to your breaker box? I had an electrician install a 50amp connection into my breaker box. I am planning to buy a 7000 or more running watt generator. I have noticed some are grounded to the frame, but this one and the almost identical Duromax inverter have a ground connection on the panel.
    (Also, I am not sure about this, but have been told it is bad to coil your extension cords when in use because it can create issues??)

    • @SkypowerwithKarl
      @SkypowerwithKarl 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If your electrician was halfway competent, you should have a ground through the cord when you connect. If you run the Predator 9500 or Duramax version, you will have to change the plug on the cord at one end or the other since you have a 50 outlet and those generators use 30 amp 240. A 50 amp cord has very little power loss but it’ll be creative stuffing the #6 wire into a nice Eaton 30 amp plug. I’ve done it with smart dremel work because I’m stubborn and didn’t want to cut strands Lol. Forget the 30amp plug that comes in the tool kit for 6/3+8/1 50amp cable.

  • @area51flyby
    @area51flyby 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    A generator with that level of output should have a 50 amp plug! HF screwed up big time on that! Also, wish it was dual fuel capable -- gasoline or propane. If it had those two features, I would buy it, but it does not, so I'll have to buy a different brand unit.

      Well, the running watts for this generator is 7,600. So really it would only utilize a 32 Amp plug. (7,600 watts/240 volts). So the 9500 watts it puts out, is only for a few seconds. So the 50 amp outlet would be overkill anyway, since the generators breaker would pop at anything over 32 amps.

    I do understand how people that don't understand Electrical get suckered into misleading claims. At best your Generator Inverter will be equel to about 3 15 amp circuits or 2.5 20 amp ones. If you can run a house on 9.5 kw you must live in a camper. Sorry but that is misleading 40 amps and you inverter is toast before long under even that condition. Maybe you honestly think you can run a home on a 40 amp circuit. Nope. sorry but some people think you are serious. E/IR for DC will get you close. voltage x current gives wattage. hello.

      I live in a 2000 sqft home in central FL and my home almost never uses more than 10kW at any given time. So other than startup currents from the HVAC system (which he addressed with the MicroAir), I would have to be pretty careless with energy consumption to overload that generator even with my normal routine. During a power outage I wouldn't be firing up the spa heater, dishwasher, dryer, etc. without shutting other loads down first. I think in the context of running your home on a generator, it goes without saying that we are talking critical loads and energy conservation. In FL during the summertime it could be argued that HVAC is a critical load so this video can serve as a good reference point for a lot of people.

    • @TelecasterRon
      @TelecasterRon 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Under a 10kw load it wont last long. I spent much time in Cocoa Beach and the Cape. You can do it with Solar There for sure if they are ridged mounts and redundant systems. Most people are so disappointed when they find how feeble it really is.

    • @CL-gq3no
      @CL-gq3no 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TelecasterRon, this is for emergencies like power outages caused by hurricanes. People run their homes on smaller generators than this in those circumstances. He only needs lighting, refrigerator, and the HVAC to be in good shape during an emergency. Nowhere near 10kW.

      YES BUT IT IMPLIES RUNS HIS WHOLE HOUSE. I BROUGHT BACK RESORTS AFTER GENE, FRANCIS, IVIN so I am very much aware of a need for power. Just you cannot mislead people about power as the SOLAR and Generac people do. OK it is equel to a wall receptacle. Just say it don't mislead people.

    Great information about the Easy-Start and the Predator. BUT, your video shows exactly how to kill a lineman! You should NEVER have a generator wired into your panel this way. If you (or someone else) does not cut the mains first, your generator will push electricity back through the lines supplying your house and down the lines. A generator interlock isn't expensive and is easy to install. In most (if not all) locations, it is REQUIRED.

      Actually Ap Glass is referring to a separate ground from your case to a ground wire running to a driven ground nearest your generator. You’d be surprised if your generator was running a while how much static the case will build up. It might be enough to shock someone? Your relying on a house ground that will have several connections to it. The house ground may not work as well now with the additional load you have added since the house was built? Always get in the habit of checking your grounds every so often. Other utilities namely CATV/ phone tie their ground into yours instead of installing their own ground rod. They may have weakened your ground or overloaded the wire size or connection?

    • @apglass2154
      @apglass2154 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      John is correct grounding the case is very important most generators have a post to attach a ground to that has three lines running horizontal top one being the longest the bottom one being the shortest that is a schematic symbol for an earth ground.
