Please read the book Ritu vidya- the ancient science behind menstrual pactices. It explains the scientific reasons behind menstrual practices and rituals in India which commonly people think as taboo.
The writer explained that even tempons and menstrual cups are not safe for ladies due to its material..

      Menarche: The Need for Celebration
Still many women in India prefer cotton cloth to any other commercially available menstrual product. It is necessary to understand why they have such a preference, especially when products such as sanitary napkins and tampons offer extra-long protection and lesser chances of staining.
While the pH of blood is around 7.5 (slightly alkaline), the vaginal pH is typically 3.5 to 4.5 (moderately acidic). The normal vaginal pH is ideal for beneficial bacteria and creates a hostile environment for pathogenic bacteria that cause odor and infection. When the pH of the vagina increases, it favors the growth of pathogenic bacteria and yeast. ³4 During menstruation, vaginal pH becomes elevated by menstrual blood, and chances of contracting infections such as bacterial vaginosis become high.35 Therefore, breathable menstrual products that require to be changed frequently, such as cotton cloth, help to keep the pH levels in check and prevent vaginal infection. On the other hand, menstrual products that contain an impermeable plastic layer, such as sanitary napkins, and/or are highly absorbent, such as tampons, increase the chances of vaginal infections by increasing the vaginal pH by retaining blood for long periods of time.,,.

It not just affects women's helath but also the environment. It takes 500 to 800 years for one sanitary pad to degrade. That is how long it stays in the environment causing pollution. A recent study published by an environment group Toxics Link states that more than 1 billion non compostable sanitary products are dumped in India's landfills and rivers.

It's not the women's job alone to take care of the environment. Men's products like shaving creams and foams, used blades are also detrimental to the environment and pollute the ground water table, and those products also require a fair bit plastic in packaging and design that also take forever to decompose. You don't necessarily need that, you can easily use glycerine to shave but women can't use any product in their intimate area as that could affect their fertility.

I am using pads as long as i remember, and i am aware about its side-effects or more of deadly effects. I tried to switch on menstruation cups once. I faced a lot of problems inserting it into vagina. Pain was not bare-able. But it was my first time because though i am 24, not sexually active so if was kind of strange experience for me to inserting it. First day went anyhow but on second day my vagina literally swollen up. I went to visit the doctor she warn me not to repeat this in future because my vaginal skin was somehow allergic to the cup's material or whatever it is. She gave me ointments and medicine. The horror is not ending here. After that month my periods suddenly stopped for next month i waited because i faced this in past but then months passed by 4 months no periods again i pay visit to doctor. After some tests it appears that due to use of the cup my internal skin damaged a little bit and swollen from inside. I was on harsh medication for a month then after my periods commenced regularly. So now i am stuck with pads forever. I am hella scared to use cups ever again.

Thank you so much for making this informative video. This topic is still such a taboo, but I am happy people are finally starting to talk about it. 30 years back, when I had got my periods, my mom gave me disposable pads.I totally understand the reason why she made that choice. And despite coming from a poor background, she made sure I had a good life. I am sure she had zero knowledge of what these disposable pads contain. Today, when my daughter started her periods, I was able to give her a choice - reusable cloth pads vs. disposable pads & I am happy she chose reusable pads..yes there's that extra work of washing and drying, but its safer for her health & Mother Earth too..

also try to wrap it twice or tape it after wrapping it.. and then get a dustbin bag and keep all those disposed pads collected in it.. and throw it the bin. I think that way, there will be less chances of it being torn off by the dogs even they come in their contact and on top of it, it won't spread foul smell and infections in the air. Just don't throw it right away.. it can cause alot of bacteria which is not good for anyone, especially those ppl whose job is to collect and seperate those wet n dry garbages. @@prachipragya7928 ,you can use soft cotton cloth like saree, lungi, dhoti etc. Wash them nicely. Remove starch from cloth. Thin saree is best. Take 1 to 11/2 meter cloth. Fold them nicely like sanitary pad, slightly bigger than sanitary pad. Use them underneath the panty. Change cloth pad 3 to 3 times a day. Wash them in hot water and dry them nicely preferably under sunlight. They are readily used repeatedly. Good for health also saves environment from used pads which contaminate the earth

This is a great and much needed video which needs to be shared to the utmost possible. Whisper and Sofy add extreme amounts of fragrance to their pads. The fragrances are not only a source of VOCs as you mentioned, but also a source of pthalates that cause negative hormonal changes in the body. I used to get burning sensation with Sofy's perfume and sadly Sofy used to advertise it's pad on the USP of perfume. Bamboo pads are coming from China. I recently researched and the seller told me nobody manufactures them in India. It has been a long cry but this govt. rather increased the price of sanitary napkins with a hugh GST instead of making it subsidized, at least to the women who can't afford such a necessity. I even think the govt. should install incinerators to burn used pads so that sweepers and rag pickers don't get in touch with them. Sadly, I don't think the govt would ever do anything about it.

The Modi government has subsidized pads. Don't follow bollywood. In the Anganwadi offices & government PHCs you can get pads for 2 rupees per pad which is cheaper that 10 rupees per pad of whisper etc. But some nurses & doctors steal the pad & sell it privately. So get updated knowledge not the Bollywood knowledge. Many indian brands manufacture cloth pads. Cloth pads or menstrual cups are really good alternatives.

But let me tell you, once u get used to it, the action needed to insert and fit it will get saved in your subconscious mind.. 1 disadvantages is inserting the cup sometimes irritate you because it doesn't open properly but you will masterd it when you use it regularly..
It doesn't have wings but it really feels you like you're flying, cause you know the feelings with pad is horrible, everytime you have to check it either it's licking or not,but with menstrual cup you will be free.

I am 50 now and I agree that the word periods were more like a taboo & stigma but a good news too. I grew up with mixed feelings. Lots of superstitious believes are related to it which I struggled & suffered as well.
So certainly, it’s time to break free from such irrational thoughts.
Although, I beg to differ on couple of issues in this video.
    Q) Why should the famous sanitary company name it’s product “Whisper”.
    A) Because there are few things in humans which is better to keep quiet or whisper.
    For example:
    a) No one would like to burp or fart in public or amongst relatives.
We like to go hush hush from each other in my family. We taught the same to our kids as well.
    b) We don’t announce in public or amongst relatives that one needs to poop or take a leak. It is part of a daily routine.
Above points are almost everyday and lifelong affair so does it mean that we should announce in public?
Similarly menstruation too is a part of almost every woman’s life, with God’s grace! It doesn’t mean that we should celebrate or go announcing through certain rituals the way South Indians do. I never liked that tradition because the privacy of the girl child is gone and after all the rituals they are made to sit in one room in seclusion every month thereafter. How funny it is. I won’t call it a celebration. That child is very conscious and finds it difficult to come out of it. Anyways, you may appreciate it but I don’t.
    Q) Why are these companies showing blue liquid on the pad than showing the original blood colour liquid?
    A) The answer is simple.
For majority of people blood is never a comfortable sight. Be it because of stabbing, shooting, injury, bruises or a simple cut with knife or blade.
By showing the blue colour they soften the impact specially for very young girls who might find it difficult to accept.
Now if you have problem with blue colour liquid & want the companies to show the original colour then I guess the babies diaper companies too should start showing poop & urine in the diaper in their advertisements. Also the diapers for elderly should also show the same.
Now, how will it look? Good or repulsive?
Also why should we name them Huggies or Pamper. We can’t hug the child with potty or pamper them while passing motion. These diaper companies should name it as potty diapers for babies and elders as well. Why give it a pleasant name.
Let’s make it harsh and crude.
India is known for its diverse culture in Hindu religion itself.
But I fail to understand that the way people of few states celebrates girls menstruation and also pray to Kamakhya Devi; is there any God for celebrating boys hitting puberty as well? Because there is no life without boys cooperation either. So, why boys puberty is not celebrated?
In my opinion this whole process of celebration should stop. It gives quite a tribal effect. Looks like we haven’t evolved yet. These are just simple biological changes in a girl and a boy when they hit puberty.
    🙏🏼

Although I too have asked the same doubt to one of the commentator named “Naga Lalitha”. Her comment is placed somewhere around 23rd down in the row. She has scientifically explained how unsafe these menstrual cups , pads with gel and tampons are. Since I am not a science student so couldn’t understand much.
I can only apply logic. According to me I have not been able to get convinced about menstrual cups. Simply because it holds the blood inside your body until you throw it. I feel that once the blood is discharged it will start to contaminate because it is no longer inside us. It is almost out. Although there is no contact with air but still my gut feeling is that it doesn’t look safe to me.

my 1st period experience is very different from the stuff I hear . My mom taught me about these stuff before it happened and she uses cloth but recommended me to use pads (although she uses pads nowadays) I was actually not scared at all and tbh I was actually kinda excited. Well, I'm from Nepal and there is this custom where we can't see our male family member for 1 month when we get our first period and and and 1 week during our second period. Also during that time my younger brother was around 3 or 4 years old so he always ran around the house and two of my cousins were also there during that time, meaning that I would have stay in my room the entire month. I know if it were someone else they would go crazy after 2 days but I, the introverted freak with social anxiety, was having the time of my life. Seriously who WOULDN'T hate that like, 30 days away from society? heck ya!

I'm sure when they were first introduced everyone suggested using them instead of cotton cloth, just like everyone is suggesting to switch to menstrual cups nowadays. I'm pretty sure with time we'll find negative side effects of them too, so ppl shouldn't be so quick to jump to the next new thing in the market I believe, who knows how harmful menstrual cups can be since they're directly inserted into the body. Just wanted to share a bit more on the southern culture so that I can clarify it. It may sound a lot like people in the south (regions mentioned by Nikita) are not stereotypical about periods, but in fact it is the south that is most stereotypical I believe. Due to modernisation such thoughts have lessened a lot, but in my family and all the relatives I know, when you get your first period, you are supposed to sit in the corner of the house and no one is supposed to touch you until you complete 11 days. You are not even allowed to move out of the corner for the first five days. You might think that it is probably only for the first period, but no. When you get your period every month, like find out that you are on your period, you are not supposed to touch any cloth item in the house. You head straight to the washroom and take a full on shower regardless of the time. If you are not at home but out, you can act normally but once you reach home you follow the same drill. You are also strictly not allowed to touch any god related holy items if you are a Hindu until your period is done with. Yah, it gets a bit tough for us some times, but still, we consider it to be culture and respect it because, well, thats the only way to protect out culture I suppose.

I use relatively tight ( not too much) granny pants with thick white pure cotton fabric, cut in large rectangular pieces which can be folded at least 4 times. After using it for 3-5 hours( at sleeping time i use much thicker wad of cloth ), i replace it with a fresh one and keep the soiled one in zip locked plastic bag (not one time use plastic) in my purse. When i return home, i soak the soiled ones in hydrogen peroxide and wash in soapy hot water. They turn up perfectly clean and odorless. This literally saves thousands of rupees and not to mention it saves me from exposure to chemicals, and is super environment frendly. 1.5 meters of cloth lasts me at least 18 to 20 months! I don't lead a very active lifestyle so this works for me. Hope other girls find it useful as well!❤❤

I switched to menstrual cups 5 years ago and never looked back and have been actively persuading every young women in my life to atleast give it a try once. However my bestie's body literally rejected it, evenif she wanted to use it so badly. She even missed her periods as a reaction. Our vaginas have a mind of its own and sometimes they'll just have sensitivity issues to things. When we are promoting alternate menstrual products, its very important to acknowledge the people who have had bad experiences to certain products and let it be very clear that some products might not be suitable for everyone. Eventhough the possibility of your body rejecting it shouldn't make you too scared to atleast giving it a try, you have to be mindful, listen to and respect your body's reaction.
Don't be discouraged if one product doesn't work out, there are multiple different safe and environmentally responsible option for menstrual products out there.

This is actually really traumatizing after getting to know about this.....we can't let ourselves and our own women suffer as cancer is not just a disease but a BIG term that can destroy lives completely. As a girl I haven't hesitated but shared this with everyone whether girl or boy as it is important knowledge to all.....I hope humanity finds another way to help our us womens with periods without causing harm to us.....

Thannk God I have recently switched to mensural cup... And wonderfully it also lessen my cramps as compare to sanitary pads and make me feel super dry snd normal like others days... But it taken me couple of months to use it properly and that's normal..

@@cutegirlhythm I also find it super difficult at first but over time I'm able to understand it.... Find the right size for you and always relax (neither scare nor get over excited) take time to insert(mine over a min) don't force it like little push and let it merge inside you, its often painful at first but when you master it you won't find any problem, it's messy sometimes but I'm ok with it.. Talk with someone you find comfortable about it detail description help gain courage to use it.. 😁

We appreciate you di bcz literally nobody is talking about it. The basic fundamental need of women and if we(specially boy) talk about this then this society told how devil you are.
I read about this news in November and literally I have tears in my eyes as what will now our women(mother, wife, daughter) use? 🥺. Thanks for some natural and safe pads' brands that you suggest in last.
Hopefully government will take certain steps.

Nobody will call you devil, some stupid boys might make fun of you or some stupid girls might suggest you not to get involved in women's privacy bla bla bla but believe me you are an angel if you are really concerned. I even got called by a boy in chats that period pain is fake & if I am having pain then I have some health issue & should consult a doctor, so it's true some boys are actually ignorant but won't take a second to call women gold digger 😒.
