I would like to correct you. Chak chak has nothing to do with cashew. It's basically crispy cookies made from deep-fried pieces of dough mixed with honey syrup. Very tasty.

@@Whatarewetalkingabouthere looks awful, but it's a tatar desert, and i live in Tatarstan(which is a republic in russia). It's a very sweet and tasty dessert, wihch you won't like, if you don't like honey. By texture, it's giving more of fried cookies in syrup. It's very much quality related, and you need to find your own brand even here.

Let me correct your wonderful speech about Russian unknown food. Russian soda is not a soda water at all, it’s sweet drink, based on some grass or fruit that was carbon detoxified. It’s natural drink. As to Kissel, it’s no jelly, it is made if fruit juce, boiled with cornstarch . It’s also natural health food and it’s good for poor stomach.
They put bear in a bag not to show your drink outside. Because there’s a law that you can’ drink alcohol outside in public place .
Beer in the bag 100% market move. Just looks better.

To tell the truth, you can easily close thеse glass jars and you don't need to consume the whole their contents once you open it. There are special nylon caps used for that purpose. They are sold in any supermarket and almost every family has it.

I am not going to lie. This whole superstore experience makes me want to travel to Russia. I am from Canada, so I don't know how I would get there, but I would absolutely love to go.
YOu just get visa online and buy ticket and the you sleep on the place and 10-12 hours later land in MOscow. Pretty simple.

@@antoniok2015 Well I've been in Russia about 12 years, I lived in a few small towns including Belgorod, Neberzny Chelny and Gelendzik, I never had any problems as all, especially compared to the US. Also my GF is from a small town in the south and she's one of the nicest people I ever met, her best friend is nice and her parents raised her with really good values that most people forgot about a few dacades ago in the US!!!

Zefir (зефир) is very soft. It is a Russian version of marshmallow, but usually made with apple sauce, so it has a little different taste from a regular marshmallow. You are confusing zefir with meringue, which is called bezé (безе) in Russian. It looks similar to zefir but unlike zefir bezé is dry.
Zefir was stale apparently. Zephyr is a gentle breeze in English

Насчет же версии маршмеллоу - здесь слово "version" переводится как вариант, опция - указывая просто на то, что эти два десерта похожи. Так что автор комментария написала всё корректно.

Fermented milk products are so healthy. Kefir is like buttermilk and that type of cottage cheese is called curd cheese.
Ketchup maybe too. For example, in Canada they eat Heinz everywhere. The same taste all the time. In Russia there are many and every brand has variety.
As a Russian who recently moved to Canada I miss quite a few food items (kefir and pelmeni mostly). But mayonnaise and ketchup?! :-)
"Mayo" is really popular in Russia and usually has a very long shelf life, it is also not a "controlled" product, producers don't have to report substitutes as the do for milk products. I think only Vkusvill made very expensive mayo from liquid eggs. Egg content in my favorite "Sloboda" was 1.7% as per the latest roskontrol tests (and this is totally expected).
Non of them can remotely compete Hellmanns and even with Walmart's Great Value here in Canada. And even them pale in comparison with simple home made mayo.
They aren't bad, mind you, I just don't miss the emulsified oil water mixture with some spices a single bit!! :-)
In eastern part of Russia we eat Korean mayonnaise. It's much more tasty.

It has a special sweet-sour taste and is full of bacteria which are good for the stomach. 13:21 I do pickle cucumbers, tomatoes and paprika myself because I don’t like the taste of those which they sell in shops. 13:53 pickled ramson 14:11 it is orange because we add some tomato-paste into it when cooking. 15:35 it is not strange at all! It is so good for hiking! Imagine: you are in the middle of nowhere cooking canned beef with pasta in a pot on the open fire. It is so tasty! 17:59 it is mackerel
есть классные соленые огурчики от скатерти самобранки, не маринованные, реально вкусные. Только именно "соленые по-домашенему", не "хрустящие" или какие то там еще
@@amerkulow , спасибо за совет. В состав сходит лимонная кислота и куркума. Странные ингредиенты для русского блюда: ведь они в России не растут. Посчитала цену. Получается 264 руб/кг. а летом 2022 года я покупала огурцы для засолки по 60 руб/кг.

Все больше ничего нет. Должно называться "соленые по-домашнему".

I stopped packing alcohol for my friends in Russia a long time ago. I was surprised that one time I was carrying a big bottle of Jack Daniels from Detroit to Moscow in my self-care, limited myself from bringing stuff that I needed, made my bag very heavy, and was afraid to break it all the time only until I came to a Russia store and found out the same bottle of whisky for the same price as I bought it.
Not true, you can close those jars of juice - every russian home has nylon(plastic) caps that snaps perfectly to that jar. Also Tarfun and Dushes - are the best soda I ever tried, I also like kvas. Kisel is not "jelled juice" Its juice with starch - very good for little kids and for adults with health problem, very soft on your stomach. Pryanik is not cracker - its a Ginger bread. Tvorog is not Cottage cheese - its a farmers cheese that you can buy in US. What you called a "baby food" its just what we call in US an Apple sauce. And the preserved meat - its actually my favorite - its like a stewed meat that you can add to Kasha, or soup, or veggies and have a fast ready dish (I love it because I don't like to wait to hours until stewed meat get ready). You comment about bacon is been just smoked and not cooked is funny - what kind of bacon do you think you are getting in US - surprise - its also just smoked!! The cooked one you will get only in fast food restaurant. Regardless avocado and mango - you act like in US they sell them supersoft, they are also sell them hard as a rock in supermarket and you have to wait a week until they are ready to eat. Regarding Lays сheeps - I can tell you that every country has its own flavors, for example in Turkey there was Lays with yogurt, and some other flavors that I've never seen before.
sorry, did you try Tarhun and Dyushes in old Soviet times or modern ones? if just modern ones then it have nothing to do with the original taste of those authetic Soviet drinks, except for the name and color of the drink.
About lays, it is very cool that every country has it's own flavours. In Kazakhstan now we have beshbarmak flavoured lays. It is our national dish

In fact, not everything is so simple, when Coca-Cola left the Russian market, the factories that they left did not represent the same value, since the most important ingredient, cola syrup, was no longer supplied. For six months, the Dobry Cola company has been developing a recipe that is as similar in taste to the original as possible, of course, the taste is still different, but in my opinion, even for the better now. I have the opportunity to buy imported Coca Cola or Russian Dobry Cola, I prefer Dobry, the price is almost the same, but I like the taste more. Other brands like chernogolovka, classic cola, etc... are terribly by my opinions concerning cola taste.

Маринованные виноградные листья используют для приготовления долмы, они могут быть и не иностранными, в южной части России выращивают много винограда.
Все так, но виноград уже давно выращивают и на Урале в честных домовладениях.

Idk buddy but mangos and avocados are supposed to be sold rock hard so that they don't go soft and rot in 2 to 3 days of being ripe. They are meant to survive travel to the destination where it is going to be sold and still sit for days until it gets sold and the buyer should know to buy avocado and or mangos 2-3 days before the planned consumption of them.
Not only that, but now they sell mangos and avocados "ready to eat" which are fully ripe and about 1,5 times more expensive. You can see them in the video to the left of Tom when he's talking bs grabbing those perfectly fine unripe mangos
From my experience those hard ones in Russia are not at all like ripe at home in other countries. These were picked so early they would never ripe at home (I tried), you can only probably make pickled mangoes out of them but those are not known in Russia.
@@lorainisrael well that depends on the quality of produce at a specific shop. As for me, if I'm in dire need of avocado for my recipe and I need it fast - it's a lot easier to buy already ripe ones, it's not like they're 5 times the cost
Right! There is now such thing as a ripe avocado on a tree, you have to pick them then let them ripe over time. Almost all citrus in the US is picked green and ripened over time. I don’t know what part of Texas this white boy is from probably somewhere with no agriculture, because he should know better.

Когда я приехала в Германию и немцы думали удивить меня немецкими магазинами и продуктами мне было немного смешно))) ведь наши магазины больше и продуктов больше и почти все немецкие продукты у нас тоже есть))) И купить все можно даже ночью. Они не могли понять почему я не удивляюсь))
и это еще до того, как попробовать немецкую еду на вкус. С удивлением обнаружилось, что в "цивилизованных странах" "еду" видимо делают из переработанных покрышек и бумаги. Взять хотя бы их столь разрекламированные сосиски. При чем, с началом повышения цен они еще ухудшились - "санкции работают!". У поляков и чехов раньше еда была вкуснее, но за последние годы видимо и их настигл "Фелики Гегмански Культуг" и они тоже научились делать еду не из еды.
Да, у нас выбор хороший. Но вот с иностранными продуктами туговато. Хамон сложно найти, да и никакого выбора нет. Бекон наши делать нормально не умеют. Зарубежные сыры тоже сейчас под санкциями.
@@Delson868 ну, если вы так по хамону исстрадались, делайте сами. Там ничего сложного. Может, хамон иберико у вас и не получится, но средне-европейский шинкен/прошутто после нескольких попыток получается вполне нормально. Можете себя и копаколой, и панчеттой, и бастурмой побаловать. Все делается в холодильнике, из мяса из супермаркета.

Молоко только нужно настоящее, чтоб свернулось, а не из порошка как значительная часть "молока" в немецких супермаркетах. Ну и соль и энзим. Kissel has no jello - it contains starch... So you drink and eat at the same time...:-) And chak-chak is not cashews - those are zigzagging pastries with honey... There are no cashews growing in Russia, and this is a national dessert of Tatarstan.
Imagine a world where politicians and big business do not artificially create tension between countries and peoples. They tried to do what China eventually succeeded in doing, and the USSR collapsed. At that time, the stores had empty shelves, and people stood in lines, knowing when small batches of various products would be delivered. Almost all families had their own plots of land with houses outside the city, with vegetable gardens; this compensated for the lack of food in stores for personal consumption. Therefore, those who immigrated to the USA or Europe in those years were shocked by the abundance of goods abroad. Now this won’t surprise anyone in Russia; there’s everything in abundance.

The guy is from Texas, so don't expect any sophistication neither in taste nor understanding. But it is interesting to see the enormous selection of products they have in that hypermarket.
Actually, it’s not that weird that they cover the beer in paper sunlight destroys beer. that’s why the majority of beer bottles are dark colored. kind of like when you tint your car windows to not letting so much light.
That's basically an urban myth, light doesn't do anything to beer, time and fluctuations in temperature are what cause beer to go bad.

@@zakkmylde1712 BS, any hoppy beer, such as an IPA will alter very quickly when exposed to light. 3-Methyl-3-butene-1-thiol is the actual chemical produced when the hoppy beer is exposed to light. Green and white bottles expose beer to more light than a brown bottle, and even a brown bottle exposes it more than a can.

To tell the truth, we share 95% of similar recipes in our cuisines. Just due to the climate zones and stuff.
Even the borschtsch which is just a beetroot soup, that every nation in Europe has on its menu.
@@yuriyanov3217 not only climate, North America has the same climate but different dishes. It's common Slavic cuisines, loke Kvas is ancient Slavic drink which can be found all over Eastern Europe(and Northern Asia)
Shoot… I moved to the USA from Russia 20 years ago and I miss all these Russian foods so much. There’s so much variety of different foods and flavors in Russia. American supermarkets are super boring. But lots of what was shown is not originally Russian but from all different neighboring countries and cuisines. It’s just for the last 1000 years Russians adopted so much from all over the world. Missing it…

In all honesty and from my personal point of view, the German and Russian cuisine seems to have some similarities. Except for really few differences, I would have settled in culinary after 14 days......Disgusting looking pork in a glass? Hell yeah....^^

Kompot usually produced from fruits without alchohol and many many people doing in at home from natural fruits(many people have summer houses which we call "Dacha"-its garden with summer house , Russian Sauna-Banya and the place for grilling meat). So you can be sure that its 100% natural. Its fruits+sugar,boiled. For many people its tasty and every family have own recipe(different mixes of fruits,different quanity of sugar etc). Its quite healthy if you not put too much sugar in it.

The thing is. The milk that we have in the west - doesn’t get sour when it goes off!!!! Ta-da 😅it’s mixed with some crap, it separates into weird “powdery” crap on the bottom and dirty water-like liquid on the top. That’s it. Smells bad but it’s not sour. Can’t use it for anything else. Milk is not the same. I also react to milk (get stuffed nose and phlegm right away), when I tried local Russian milk I never had any reactions, I could drink tons of it and never had any issues.

I am a Russian living in the US. Here, when milk becomes sour and spoiled, it goes BAD. It smells bad, and is probably toxic. Forget about making pancakes with it. Not sure why.
Oh, I live in US last 9 years and miss all those delicious things we used to buy in Russia, here you cannot find any nice tasty drinks, only bunch of chemical drink or soda, which I never buy as I don't want to kill myself)) but I have opportunity to go to Russian store and buy some delishesness there! Tell me about it. I drink Kombucha instead of soda, but few of our supermarkets have it. Didn't always used to be that way. Rootbeer and Birch Beer were naturally brewed originally. And I think you can still find old style Rootbeer in areas with large Amish populations.

My daughter spent 8 years in Russia and still hasn’t learned Russian grammar and how to speak properly. She speaks well but with a strong American accent and uses English words in her sentences, mixes two languages. The Russian kids were very cruel to her in school because of her language barrier and her super friendly personality. They found it weird. One Armenian kid threw stones at her when he found out she was an American. They fought a lot: a 10 year old boy with a 7 year old girl!!!! I told her to fight back, but we got tired of all this, we had to pack and leave. We are in Los Angeles now and she is a straight A student here. The only good part she remembers about Russia is food. She hated schools, kids, grumpy old people on streets and buses. She doesn’t want to go back. Bad memories.

Тушенка - это еда для ленивых и/или холостяков. На фоне жричёдали это может быть и съедобно, но за эти деньги можно купить нормальное мясо и приготовить что-то действительно вкусное. Для походов это тоже полное фигня, тяжело и бестолково. Не путайте здоровую и натуральную пищу, натуральное не всегда здоровое. У нас первое место в мире по потреблению майонеза на душу, а это вообще ни разу не здоровая еда. У нас очень жирная еда, просто потому, что мы северная страна, поэтому и продолжительность жизни невысокая.

At 5:40 there are plastic or rubber lids or caps sold in most places to close jars. Most jars have same diameter of the lid in Russia. That helps prolonging expiration of the product once airtight lid is open

Zefir is not a meringue. I guess it looks like one, that's why he confused it with meringue. In fact Zefir is very soft, more similar to large marshmallows shaped like meringues. It's like marshmallow, but is made with apple sauce, so it has a little different taste from regular marshmallow.
To appreciate pork in a jar/tin, one has to serve in a Soviet army. My dad always kept a couple of tins and ate it like once in 6 months when feeling nostalgic.

Soviets had a separate sign for goods named "Знак качества/Quality Mark": pentagon with a star inside. It's widely used by marketers even now addressing those who misses USSR :)

canned meat is not for poor people and it's really tasty. It's really used as a food for hitch hikers, because it's preserved in the way, that it will not get spoiled until you open it and it's really tasty, but, of course, you can eat it at home. I really like it. "Tushonka" is translated as stew to english.
Sea buckthorn berry flavoured things are also quite common in Finland. We also have those un-flavoured circle-shaped cracker things here. Halva originates from Iran, but it's common in many middle eastern countries, Greece, India, and Dijibouti. You can find vegan "caviar" in the US. Mangos and avocados and such are often stored in the cold, or else they get too ripe too fast. Green grapefruit is a thing. We also have sauna aisles in our big stores in Finland, because saunas are a big part of our culture (in fact, I just came out of the sauna like 2 hours ago).

But I am old enough to remember when everything was glass before all this plastic shit came and ruined it all. We had beer in plastic bottles for a while but they never sold because the plastic ruined the beer flavor.

Kefir is quite popular in US, usually sold under the Lifeway brand; and the 'cottage cheese' you mentioned is what you can find here in most grocery stores as 'farmers cheese', look in the refrigerator section
However the lifeway kefir is different than most of the kefir here in Russia. When I go to America I prefer drinking Turkish ayran over the lifeway kefir
@@zagorodom9650 yeah, russian kefir is more liquidy and not as processed/smooth, the taste/texture is more interesting
The problem is that there is basically only one brand of kefir in USA and many Americans still don’t know or use it. Yogurt is much more common and popular. Also, literally only one brand of farmers cheese ( I think it’s called friendship). Very small package yet expensive. Cottage cheese isn’t the same as farmers.
The lifeway Kefir is absolutely low quality compared to the regular Russian ones, even their full fat organic versions don't compare to the real thing, imo
Bottles of beer are often put in bags so people could drink them in public places, I guess. Or maybe it’s easier to preserve beer in non transparent packaging.

Самое смешное, что многие из этих продуктов (в том числе тушёнка) продаются в любом американском супермаркете. Просто он либо не может провести аналогию из-за того, что они по-другому называются или упакованы, либо просто не обращал там на них внимания. Тушёнка это абсолютно то же самое, что в США называется corned beef. У них ещё есть roast beef в консервных банках, это мясо более крупными кусками. Яблочное пюре в США продаётся в каждом магазине и очень популярно, называется apple sauce. Просто упаковано в маленькие пластиковые индивидуальные стаканчики, а не в большую стеклянную банку. И это вовсе не относится к baby food в Америке. Кефир тоже продаётся в каждом американском супермаркете и так и называется Kefir. Даже если он его не покупает, как можно этого не видеть, если он в США в магазины ходит?

Никакой он не иностранец, да живет в США, английский с русским акцентом, названия русские переводит на английский, где нет ни слова на английском
