Come to think of it, that's true. Line tactics with masses of people slowly walking toward each other and discharging their firearms at point blanks... Remember "Patriot" or "Barry Lindon"? Sometimes I shouted at screen while watching them: "Fucking go prone, you make it 10 times less likely to be blown off! Or use some kind of portable wooden cover against slugs!" No, it would be considered dishonourable. Getting your face torn off by a slug is, of course, very honourable and noble.
Yeah improve the fuck out of the ai Give it the Empire map and factions keep the Napoleon Graphics, Naval battles etc and you have yourself an awesome game.
line battleship tottaly makes sense in this time period, it allow the most damaged ship to hide behind his allies to retrat or take care of whatever problem it encounter, it's also easier to keep track of what's going on for the admiral.
1:08:30 The French cavalry start running sideways. They're just sliding along the ground, facing a completely different direction to where they're actually going. How embarrassing. They do realise they're in Napoleon total war right, not Shogun 1?
Caesar Salad Yeah, I've noticed that even with graphically more impressive titles like Attila even on ultra. You can't adjust view distance so it basically just has a stagnant unit skin slide across the screen at a certain distance. But in Napoleon and Empire, it's a hell of a lot more prominent.
A line always works better since it gives time for the ships to reload before it gets into engagement again + it takes less damage on the same front. 1 ship fires and lets the one behind him to get in position to fire on the same ship. = faster focus fire rate = less enemy cannons firing on you = less losses = victory. It increases efficiency and damage output by using focused tactics. The only way to match such an efficient offensive tactic is to match it with another line tactic. Better tech and long range weapons like rockets and missiles made such tactics obsolete but before those technologies those line tactics were the best and they proved it.
Although I love this time period, I wholeheartedly agree that the AI and overall mechanics are shit in this game. I use Napoleonic Total War 3 which fixes it up a little, but I still think if I wasn't so obsessed with this time period I wouldn't pay two cents for this game.
Mechanic wise the two are nearly identical. If NTW is shit, then so is ETW. If anything, ETW mechanisms are more barebones. No attrition and 2 turns per year. CA should've patch ETW to the state NTW is in. Instead they just leave the game to rot.
Fall of the Samurai is the better fire arms based Total War. Just a shame there's so much that is wonky in both Empire and Napoleon as Empire had some good ideas for Total War but was never finished
Oh yes the rifle fire from the elite infantry is so satisfying. Though the Gatling guns and artillery had the issue of always shooting to the sides of the units instead of center
At least the arty doesn't have unlimited ammo. Your also speaking about a time when artillery was beginning to advance so yeah the arty is going to be bloody good.
Because of arty game is crap, also guns are too accurate and fire to fast for any tactics. At least in NTW you can take a volley and still come on top.
FOTS is about 50 years later I think. Artillery advanced a lot in the 19th century. The artillery is balanced enough considering there is no horse artillery, limited ammo and that they are really expensive unlike in NTW. The shells in FOTS are explosive as well so that's another reason why they do even more damage.
personally i think the not choosing the weather is better and more realistic. also adds some needed challenge considering you wiped out the british in about 20 turns. also on the naval battles i feel its better to start with regular shot as the first few volleys are never going to sink anything but they will take out some cannons meaning you can then chain shot more effectively and then grape shot in relative safety
infantry had to shoot in lines because firearms were so inacurate in this time that the only chance to actually inflict serious damage to the enemy was, to to hit them with a concentrated volley. it may seem stupid at first but if it wasn´t effective nt every army of the time would have done it
Also the majority of men would unconsciously try to miss when firing at human targets, such as aim slightly away from the target or blink when firing. Also firing in a large group provided the men with some plausible deniability when the enemy dies.
plus being closely packed together prevents massed cavalry breaking through the line whilst being just shallow enough that a cannon ball takes out a whole column of people
Maybe liberating that province (Cleves) would've been a better idea? To create like a buffer state for the time being? I know you don't exactly want more allies but maybe the Prussians would've take them out for you anyways.
You can expect to hear from my lawyer. At 50:40 you stated "Oh Well I am not complaining". I laughed so hard, I fell out of my chair and sprained my wrist. The charge will be sexual repression. I really can't do shit with my left hand.
If it helps, knowing centi, milli, deci, deca, kilo and hecto is a core part of american high school education. Though most only remember maybe 4 or 5 of those for any length of time, depending on the teacher. What bugs me about metric users is the ones who thing kilos measures weight. It's not like it's an obscure fact that kilos dont measure weight like it is in imperial that slugs measure mass.
Lol I understand why you don’t get the 1700’s style of war. But I think the the guns were way more inaccurate and the armies way bigger, like the brits had 100s of warships and the French mustered half a million troops for its doomed Russia campaign. The battle lines stretched for perhaps a mile or so. Tens of thousands of men. The game doesn’t really do it justice.
On that battler of Hannover prussians moved to intercept remember? And they did quite well 01:05 45 - Look at their troops. Ai did what they were suppose to do xD
Sure it's better to capture ships but there's something about a ship of the line going pop after you hit its powder magazine that's just so satisfying.
They fought in lines because their weaponry was so inaccurate they only way they could hit anything was to concentrate their fire. Once rifling was invented, they stopped.
Hey Legend. Coming at you from New York, USA. Yeah...sorry bud. No metric system yet, Lol! We drive on the right, we have a totally different meaning regarding football, we are world champs in many sports and activities that only play in the US. Lol
At the beginning you had no money, but after a while, create militia in London and Wales (to tranfer to London) and get back your army on France, it's cheap and will allow you to use your amy instead of having them in England doing nothing
I'll keep one or two in an army as dedicated melee units for sieges and town battles but yeah other than that everything they can do standard line infantry can do just as well, cheaper.
i think that with all these games the ai should get visibility handicaps: for both sides it should show a ghostly "last known position" that you could use to trick each other
I felt this game was more faction locked as far as troop choices went. France had great artillery so theirs is pretty easy to level up to get accuracy. I felt like Prussia had the only land troops worth anything. Stuff like that helped me enjoy this game. I liked empire because there were so many regions and so much trade. Also, the independence campaign was great for me personally, as an American. And really, they're all broken a little. That's part of the game, at this point
I've been thinking of buying a laptop mainly for gaming & almost exclusively total war games as I just love them!! Do you guys have any recommendations? Ideally something under £1000 (or equivalent). Thanks.
The Only Reason Everything In The 18th Century Is A Line Is Because The Musket Where Shit When It Came To Accurate And The More Guns In A Line The Better Of Chances To Hit Something
muskets were actually pretty accurate. it was just better for maneuvering and giving orders, what with no radios or phones. thats why there were also distinctly colored uniforms and flag bearers, which may seem strange to us today, but it was so a commander could see his men through the smoke and flags were for rallying.
William Cortelyou it doesn't matter there is still slavery modern slavery the tax in the Netherlands its the most of Europe the government doesn't care about the people over here it was good before when there was dutch guilder it went to shit when the euro came in. afcourse most countries did slavery but the dutch haven't done anything good they were always ungrateful like in the 70s foreigners from all over the world came to the Netherlands because the dutch needed people to do their dirty work and now 47 years later they don't want to foreigners to stay here. its kind of stupid when you ask for workers and than 47 years later be ungrateful.
Legend if you were a general I'd follow you like Caesars legions followed Caesar cause you know what you're fucking talking about. You are the campaign and manual resolve master.
As much as I play wargames, and as much as players complain about AI...wait until there is real AI and starts kicking players' asses...then it will be the other side of the coin....the AI is cheating.... EDIT: Will just show how shitty players actually are. Waiting for that day.
Legend, I feel you might have more respect for the naval strategies of the day if you understood more of them. The straight line thing is sort of stupid - but it can leave things open to split up units and destroy both, or even exploiting another line by Crossing the T. Granted, I am not sure how these might work with the Napoleon mechanics, even though the great admirals of the day used them to great success.
I bought this as you didn't get access to Thrones of Brittania and I got my arse handed to me in Naval combat. I thought I'd take down their sails with a fifth rate and then the India men you just said it as I write. It's a boarding mans war. I just got a great hit from a Total war game. I'll never buy there new titles until they give you some credit. See you later fucker

Nut sack
Oh yes. That oen Napoleon documentary was infuriating. Fucking charge. You kill 3 people with your damn bayonet during the same time you reload once.
Honor is not the reason for that. Recherche a bit and you will be surprised.
Don't tread on me he's Australian you idiot , more people in this world use the metric system!
A remake of this game would be amazing
Yeah improve the fuck out of the ai Give it the Empire map and factions keep the Napoleon Graphics, Naval battles etc and you have yourself an awesome game.
@@adamredmayne1326 maybe a graphics upgrade or two as well
Drinking game:
Drink every time he complains about the weather or the formation
RIP your liver.
nothing is a better soundtrack than legend's birds
I don't know why but when I listen to your videos while doing homework I focus so much better. It's like white noise, but so much more soothing.
line battleship tottaly makes sense in this time period, it allow the most damaged ship to hide behind his allies to retrat or take care of whatever problem it encounter, it's also easier to keep track of what's going on for the admiral.
Not to mention nearly all guns are on the side of the ship, its best for offense and defense, legends just has/had no clue about naval warfare
1:08:30
The French cavalry start running sideways. They're just sliding along the ground, facing a completely different direction to where they're actually going. How embarrassing. They do realise they're in Napoleon total war right, not Shogun 1?

Free Poland, if not for yourself do it for madame Walewska!
Hello , Thx for making time for this videos on NTW.
I just loveeee this game !
TIL: Legend hates lines. Particularly straight ones.
Immersive bird noises mod

If NTW is shit, then I can hardly imagine what ETW would amount to.
I love the time period as well and the warfare i gave NTW a shot man it was shite thats the end of that lol
again, I love the time period but mechanics r kind of shitty. I did like the big scale of ETW tho and it was ok with darthmod
But the vanilla ETW is downright broken.
You can't bring up the mods when comparing the two.
Mechanic wise the two are nearly identical.
If NTW is shit, then so is ETW.
If anything, ETW mechanisms are more barebones.
No attrition and 2 turns per year.
CA should've patch ETW to the state NTW is in.

Yes! These episodes are my favourites of yours.
Steep slope of the massive hill was causing the cannons to aim far to low, but hey sometimes it just works anyway.
Fall of the Samurai is the better fire arms based Total War. Just a shame there's so much that is wonky in both Empire and Napoleon as Empire had some good ideas for Total War but was never finished
Oh yes the rifle fire from the elite infantry is so satisfying.

FoTs is lame af because who gets first volley wins 99%. No tactics. Also, arty is godlike.
At least the arty doesn't have unlimited ammo. Your also speaking about a time when artillery was beginning to advance so yeah the arty is going to be bloody good.

I agree with you regarding the US's use of the imperial system over the metric system.
Prussia's armies are like hydra's
"Cut off one head and two shall take its place"
When everything is going Legend's way...the birds come in and play

1:05:20 if only you had some howitzers with explosive shot. My absolute favourite thing in Empire battles ;D
Maybe liberating that province (Cleves) would've been a better idea? To create like a buffer state for the time being? I know you don't exactly want more allies but maybe the Prussians would've take them out for you anyways.
Maybe there was a cat prowling around and the birds were hassling it to drive it away?
Warscape is killing total war. They need to go back to the "Total War engine" and dump the warscape engine
this is so entertaining

2019 and we still refuse the metric system
Meh, not in hospitals at least.
6 years late but the key to cavalry in this game is line infantry's square formation. square = bad for cav but weak to normal line formation
Lol I understand why you don’t get the 1700’s style of war. What are you doing disbanding grenadiers? They're better!

That's what the Austrians said.

Tw engine 2 was by far the best one
well ACTUALLY, you are playing in the 19th cent. (1700 - 1800)
John Constantine No, it's the 19th century, but the 19th century is from 1800-1900
Yeah sorry, you are right.. LOL
Legendoftotalwar you dont make any sense line formations are there to fire blankets and sheets and volleys for spreading out the damage
Christ mate chill you sound like your gonna turn them into chicken 😂 53:11

You should try the Peninsular War DLC as Britain.
Bird problem = air rifle.
If you defeat an enemy why not just order the whole army to advance
"Runter ihr Narren!" Hahaha
OH no We can hear that lol.
1:08:32 haha magic horsies
As a brit, i like both systems of measurement. Metric and Imperial
@1:02:55, enemy AI at it's very finest..

Don't declare war on the Dutch they're the best kind of people you need them.
it's pre-recorded So "Advice" is pointless
pretty sure he knew that :/
Dude look at his name he's a dutchy
Shadow so, which nation do you hail from that didn't do those things you mentioned?

56:50 joke make me laugh)) still don't open this technology
Legend I know you don't like suggestions, but you should try and snag some tech off of other factions.
1:05:07 Wow... Just wow. :D
man stop complaing on the birds it's a nice background noice i am not gonna complain bro
You sound just like Chris Hemsworth 😂👍
Napoleon AI is dumb but get sooooo many bonuses, even worst than Attila's AI
I love Napolean, but I just can't get into this bleeping game.
Joshua Perry yeah that sounds glitch has been there since forever
WHAT? NAPOLEAN KILLED VENICE!
1:05:16
he should board
Legend if you were a general I'd follow you like Caesars legions followed Caesar cause you know what you're fucking talking about. You are the campaign and manual resolve master.
Just make sure you're in a good unit mate, because just like a good General Legend has no problem with sacrificing a unit or two haha.
Don't be line infantry or else he'll throw you at cavalry and say you suck if you fail.
As much as I play wargames, and as much as players complain about AI...wait until there is real AI and starts kicking players' asses...then it will be the other side of the coin....the AI is cheating....

Do a campaign with Jude
