Yeah !!!!!!! I have one of those combos. Absolutely wonderful. I also run a closed back Thiele cab (EV loaded - 12 inch) with the combo. The EV speaker helps to fill out the low end with a kung fu punch. This amp is really great for hard rock sounds. I don't really play metal so I don't have any secrets about dialing in a doom tone. But, this video was really excellent by demonstrating the sound through different speakers. Keep up the great work!!!
I love using an open back cab even for my amp heads. Open back combo amps are often underappreciated. They're known for having looser low end, yes, but they also have less low end overall and are more mid forward in general. Lends to more biting, percussive sounds, and the back facing projection from the cone going backwards out the open back leads to a natural reverb that is often very upper midrange heavy without being overly metallic or harsh at live venues or for room mics
i have the same amp, try these 4 tips... tip 1: use the petrucci graphic eq settings --_-- tip 2: on the geq dont use the eq in(strange mids) use the eq auto(more smooth scoop) tip 3: knobs are more tone balanced in the 12:00 position (presence use as much as you want) tip 4: use the sm57 in the clear cone position not seeing dust cup at all
These amps definitely have a different sounding gain channel. They can sound kind of harsh in isolation, but they actually work great in a mix. I keep one around because they're great to record with.
I used to own the Mark IV and an early 2000s Mesa slant, I didn’t mind the two together but definitely didn’t love the open back combo speaker. I also own the Mesa single rectifier combo and I don’t have any issues with the rectifier having enough low end in the open back combo. Lastly I went combo with the 5150 Iconic and I am loving the closed back combo
I have an open back 212 cabinet that I built myself using Celestine v30s. Works fine for high gain because it blasts out the front, but you can mic the back too. Not a combo though…
I put a mesa black shadow in my red stripe bandit, and it doesn’t lack low end punch at alllll. High powered speaker with a good low end, and you won’t miss that cab WUMP that so many of us seek to avoid 😁
I kinda have that issue with my Marshall JCM800 4010 combo, so I made a fullback plywood panel with some ventilation and it sounds better, also swapped in a Eminence DV-77 speaker that helped alot on it's own.
Is it possible to close an open-back combo amp to improve its sound? I have a Crate G60-XL (my first amp) and have wondered if a speaker swap or closing that open-back would help enough.
I had 2 Cali 50+ combo. I was so surprised how this beast sounds when I paired it to my Engl 4x12 pro. I sold one, and I kept one. But I converted it to a head. In combo, the Dc5 sounds better & nicer👌 but pairing the Cali 50+ to a cab. 2x12 or 4x12, it sounds more aggressive than the dc5. Dc-5 & Cali 50+ I'm keeping both in my collection! 🤘 Btw, I have the Roadster as well, but I still love the Dc-5 & Cali 50+ more
Love it! I think the only real downside of the calibers is that they’re old and the build quality was pretty poor by mesa’s standards. Lots of plastic standoffs and weird choices under the hood. But if you get a clean/good one… thrash city!
I saw the thumbnail and thought it was the studio 22 and got so stoked since ive been looking at one at a pawn shop here but they wont let me actually turn it up loud enough to hear it properly.
Hey man, I've got a Peavey Triple XXX head, with a vintage Crate 412sl cab. And I was wondering if you maybe had a Mesa Rectoverb 50 combo that you might be interested in trading.
I had that amp. I appreciate the clean tone rather than the overdrive. It has this honky mids that can never be dialed down. Check out Nola by Down its Pantera but not, they used that amp
1/4" plywood panel, painted black, cut just wide enough to fit and to allow for the tubes to breathe, wood screws to secure to the back. Problem solved! If the tubes get too hot, add a small PC fan exhausting out through the top hole in the back you've made to keep them cool. (electrical work required obviously). I dig the .50 Cal, CoC always had a great sound with them, reminds me alot of the Mark III.
@@ungarlinski7965 Yep good ole Corrosion of Conformity, Pepper used them quite a bit from what I remember. As for insulation, you don't do that to your 4x12s do you? I certainly don't... Granted this does not totally seal the combo from the back, as you still need to access the tubes, but I have done this to an old Peavey Bandit and it was a dramatic difference in bass response, especially when it was sitting on the floor.(bass frequency traveling)
Once you lost the OD pedal I liked your tone lots better , I think your low end sounded really good and would have worked great with a band IMHO Heavy and defined at the same time, as you went on and tried the next cab it just sounded woffy, muddy to my ear
That amp is VERY much out of spec. I have heard several of these over the years and not one of them had the nasty brittle top end that this one has. I think you might be right about the preamp tube. Something is most definitely wrong.
I'm no expert, but something definitely sounded off to me. It seemed to get worse as the video moved along, but it started to get really bad about halfway through.
My take on it is , try a speaker more fitted like a celestion c90 Black Shadow I think it is amazing . I have a 2/12 boxed or closed back it is sick . And you know that Electra dyne was closed back and that one oh my please do a review on a Electra dyne most underrated amp I've ever tried It has girth and punch it's simply amazing
Am I the only metal head that enjoys the sound of an open back cab ? I prefer like a convertible 4x12 but I’ve always liked the more open less directional sound of open backs maybe it’s because I played a 2x12 50 watt jcm800 a lot back in the day ? Not necessarily in this demo but in the room in person I like open backs .
Not gonna lie. Yes, there are better amps. But my first tube amps were the Mesa studio 22+ and the DC3. Great amps and I got a fuck ton of mileage out of them. They are special amps. Would recommend.
Open back combo amps get very noisy and yes they tend to sound sloppy and some can sound too honky for Metal I know because I have a Fender Champion 40 watt amp and it sucks for metal unless I have my Boss DS-2 Turbo Distortion or my Boss FZ-5 Fuzz pedals in front of it
You should reach out to TPS Kyle (That Pedal Show). Mick mentions you quite a bit in their shows because they can’t thrash riff lol. Maybe help with more exposure.
You go through the trouble to abbreviate it in capital letters and then spell it out in parentheses, with capital letters instead of calling it by name in the first place, hilarious
Dude, I need this amp! Is it true bypass? Does it have a sweet spot? Is it transgender friendly? Would it go good with a bud light? Covid compatible? Can it get Eddy's "Smells like teen spirit" tone? Asking for a friend
Kyle, I gotta say that I didn't like this one at all. It didn't matter the speaker or cab, it had a really fatiguing thing going on in the upper mids. It could have been the single mic or mic choice. Which can be worked out in the studio. But here it was no bueno.
Wasn't digging this one through any of the speakers. Treble was very harsh and messy. Thanks for the video, either way. Now, I know not to go looking for one of these.
Playing with open back cabs just means your bass player feels more appreciated.
The 50 cal plus is probably my favorite Mesa because of Corrosion of Conformity.
That was the first thing I thought as well!
“Blind” vibes…..
“Vote With A Bullet” & “These Shrouded Temples”….. brilliant 🤘🏽
and down nolaaaaa
Actually, it's a good idea doing a series on this: how combos sound with original speaker/ plugged into a cabinet.
For a combo, that's just monster! Pretty dang good preamp, love to run that through my V30 4x12! Thanks for posting!!
Add a 1x12 closed back cabinet. It brings a balance to the tone that cannot be achieved by a lone open, or closed back cabinet.
This is my solution.

That is probably the best sounding .50 cal demo on the internet. Nice and BRIGHT!!!!
The CAB makes 70% of the tone. Thank you for confirming this again.

I kinda really like how this amp sounds think it has a different voicing that I like a lot

Cab/speaker/mic placement are everything. What you’re getting out of the amp is gain and volume. Btw that intro riff took me back 😂!
These amps definitely have a different sounding gain channel. They can sound kind of harsh in isolation, but they actually work great in a mix. I keep one around because they're great to record with.

I love it. Raw and unique
I pair my Mesa Triple Crown combo with a closed back widebody 1x12 cab. Best of both worlds!
Love Weber Speakers! I have 2 Mesa 2x12's with silver wolf and I couldn’t be happier!
Love the guitar. Was thinking about getting one. Would you recommend it? Looks great and sounds great from the reviews I have seen.
I have a Mesa mark IV combo, I turn it into head and pair it with a Hesu 2x12 modern with Demon speakers. Instant sick tone.
I have an open back 212 cabinet that I built myself using Celestine v30s. Works fine for high gain because it blasts out the front, but you can mic the back too. Not a combo though…
That moment before you called for an aneurysm break is basically a common part of daily life after surviving one. Real talk. Speaking from experience.

It'll be on his channel other called "Kyle Bull 2"
@@KevinTheMetalhead Thanks!

Bro that grey wolf sounds friggin sick, I've been messing with WGS stuff lately but I might have to get one of those grey wolfs

I have one of these, waiting on new tubes right now for it. I’ll let you know how I get it set up with the high gain tube upgrade from Eurotube soon
Quick question, does anyone find open back end amps more "ice picky" on high gain than closed back amps?
I saw the thumbnail and thought it was the studio 22 and got so stoked since ive been looking at one at a pawn shop here but they wont let me actually turn it up loud enough to hear it properly.
I run my Studio .22 Caliber + through an EVH 412 , sounds really good attenuated !

How do you like the EVM speakers in a 4x12? I’ve never given them a chance.
Would love to hear you demo a Mesa dc-5/dc-10. Sorry if you already did and I missed it.
Have you ever tried New Standard Tuning?

Do you have to add insulation or foam or anything?

@@vashstampede5933 Thx. It's my first amp, a Crate G60 XL combo with an open back.
Nice Engl shirt. Plz demo some more Engl amps. =)
If you can mic the back of combos like this and get in phase they actually sound really full
Funny how we were just talking about mesas and the Rec and 50cal/mark tones
Maybe the mic position? More distance - more bass!
Looking at getting the ltd James hetfield iron cross do you have any thoughts on that guitar
If you could only keep 3 amps, which ones and your fav?
Dang you gots that set up wiked !!!!

Has an almost hi fi sound going on.
I don't like combo for some not good reason. But I'm surprised that you don't like mark series. I prefer them /recto
Could tell it was an open back on the intro, almost no low frequencies coming through. Certainly lacks punch.

How can you hate combo amps? So weird.
