@@andrewmtgx its not worth making small individual games. Way to much supply and not enough demand. Also, even if you make $500, it would probably take you about 100 hrs to make, so $5 and hour really isnt worth it. I would say to either make them just for fun, or collaborate with others and make a real, bigger game that has a possibility to make tens of thousands.

This isn't meant to be hate but rather critique:
Calling a game: "Theyest thou" will repel most users quickly as it is way too cryptic and sounds like a game about shakespeerean history.
I'm sure with: "Theyest thou" you had a witty idea or that it fits with the games world and story BUT as a user I'm watching from the absolute outside and at most I know that you can shoot guns in your game which makes me and most other users react in a certain way: "It looks like average McShooty and it's called, Theyes thou? So it's the same but with a fancy name, next.".
A name like: "Psychic Gunmen/women" (Which is friggin' basic I know, it's an example) would apeal to more users as it is a straight forward title which states what this game is about without spoiling too much, which in turn will get you that extra few seconds on your steam store page.
I VERY often browse my steam discovery queue and when I see a game with a weird title or an awful title screen, I instantly click on: "not interessted".
HOWEVER if the title screen looks interessting and/or the title tells me a bit about the game or sparks interest, (e.g.: Boneworks, Rimworld, Deep Rock Galactic). I spend a bit of extra time on that store page and become more invested in the game and it's community.
Again this is meant as critique and as a hint on what the average idiot (like me) gets interessted in. Also: English is not my first language so I'm sorry for any mistakes.
I really want to see you succeed as I do with any other indie developer, since my dream is to make gamestoo but I can't really follow that dream right now, (cuz' life).

@@Miziziziz Phew okay, so my comment was taken serious. Glad to hear it. :)
      Edit:
      I forgot to mention positives:
The idea to be able to levitate and shoot guns is very original and if I was you i'd absolutely go all out on that feature. Maybe even make it into a 3D game. I haven't seen many games (if any) with this ability and it is very innovative. Which is also a thing that gets peoples attention: Innovation. Best examples are Minecraft and the Half-Life series. These games set new standarts and were milestones in gaming history. While a single feature won't be a milestone IT IS able to set a new standart and it will surely grab attention if done correctly. Thank you :)

When it comes to TH-cam, all they care about is watch time. As in how many minutes people watch your videos for. That said, I enjoy your content especially because you don't pad out your videos with meaningless Intros and constant calls-to-action like "Subscribe, like, ring the bell" and all that.
You're doing great stuff man, you deserve more than you get!

    • @racsovbibli765

I agree. It's a relief watching a video without the youtuber begging for subscribers.

    • @JonesCrimson
      @JonesCrimson 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Not true, actually, TH-cam invests most of its attention on "User Interaction."
The more a viewer is willing to watch the entire video, like or dislike, comment, subscribe, notifications, shares, and probably the most important: watch several videos in a row from a user in a single sitting; the more TH-cam shares that creator.
To oversimplify it: watch time is a +3, hitting the buttons is +1 each, watching consequtive videos is a +2 each. The composite score is User Engagement that they're looking for, and how your number compares to somebody else would be how likely the algorithm is to recommend you instead of them.

    • @moocowp4970
      @moocowp4970 4 ปีที่แล้ว

I thought it all had to do with how long the users watched the ads on the videos? That's what a TH-camr told me previously at least.
So if there is only two ads one at start and one at the end of the vid, and every person leaves before the end and only watches 5 seconds of the first one before skipping, then you will only get a tiny fraction of money. But if you put 10 ads in your vid and everyone watches the whole of each ad (which will never happen obviously) then you will get lots of money from that vid.
That's what I was told at least and it made sense to me since TH-cam makes their money from the ads too.

    • @chef2654
      @chef2654 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@moocowp4970 The thing is, very few people get to "put ads" on their videos themselves. the vast majority are put there automatically. That's why you see so many clickbait videos that are ~10 minutes long, since that seems to be the threshold for getting a guaranteed midroll ad put on your video.

In your videos you're also very to the point, which is great for my attention span (a video being around 2-4 minutes long is a huge incentive for me to click and watch if I haven't searched out that video/if I haven't previously watched content from that channel).
I think you're going to get a lot more attention as days go on, and you should sieze the opportunity. Similarly, the .io fake multiplayer video has that kind of energy, where you're informative but in a cool flippant sort of way.

I just watched your entire process in making "theyest thou" and i just had a small critique concerning the story element.
The game itself looks fun and appealing and i often find its difficult to entice players in a story even with triple A games where people will often skip cinematic cutscenes. When the only story telling method is a block of text on a terminal using fake words as a way to artifically intice to a larger narative, it could confuse the player, which is why i think here simplicity prevails:
If you made the story more understandable through simplicity then it could intice the player to want to know about it. For example other than using extremely foreign words use more comprehensive words that help the player understand the plot of the story and not get cought up on trying to understand what all the names mean.
The other way of making the story more understandable if you kept all the foreign words would be if you supplied context to those words, but since the game is minimalistic and simple in nature, then it wouldn't make much sense to make an entire book out of it.
The game itself is superbly impressive and I can't wait to see what you make in the future!

Watching this 3 months later is pretty interesting. Lots of videos To 100k+ views, 60k+ more subscribers. Insane growth in just a few months! Great stuff. I've been teaching game design for a while, always been a rapid prototype/non-finish developer, and your vids are helping motivate actually getting something shipped.

Because of you I learned how to use Blender. You got me on some basics. I was inspired. I searched out Blenderguru. I did the donuts. I did more than the donuts. I made some characters. I learned some shaders. I'm making more. I know how to rig. It's slowly coming together.
Now I'm turning to Unity, I'm juuuust beginning to learn how to code. I would have never though I would come this far. I feel like since December, basically when I started and saw your video, it's not been consistent. But I have been learning. I am pushing to learn.
I want to be a game developer, it was always my dream as a kid.
As times went on, and graphics got better and better, I thought that I had fell too far behind. I had to work through depressions, and generally being incredibly poor. I've finally gotten to a place where I'm okayish.
    I can do this.
    Thank you.

Can't give up, mate. First game took a year and a half, second took a month and a half. Next game you make in a month and a half will be bigger and better, and eventually you will kick off. Thank you for the stats and good luck.

I've been mentally exhausted for the last few months working out if I should carry on mobile development. It's been hard getting a following and my first game was a flop but hearing a loved and talented guy talk about his experiences so calmy has really helped me. I guess it will all fall in place overtime. Thank you xx

You deserve way more, your games are unique and well polished, as a software developer trying to make my first game with Godot (sidescrolling shooter, just because I've always dreamt of coding my own game), I've opened the source code of "Thine Cometh" in Godot, pressed F5, played a bit, died, played again and until I could get all rewards, loved it, really cool game. I might need to go back to it once I try to play around with Tilemaps.
I might buy InterSection later, I would have already bought it if it was cheaper, but I understand that you have to keep the price tag to ~9 € because you don't have a enough visibility so even if it was cheaper, you might not sell enough to compensate the reduction in revenue. With the help of TH-cam and others, I believe you can only go up! But it takes time, unlike rent...
I like how all your videos go straight to the point, something that's becoming very rare on TH-cam.

You've actually released titles, that is an amazing accomplishment as it is. You have the talent, and the tools are out there.. you need to go *much bigger in scope;* people expect a whole hell of a lot from games these days.

What I really liked about this video series is how you show the progress of the game from looking very basic to looking like something that you would pay for. Game development really is an experimental process of iteration and it is easy to get discouraged early on when you don't have something that looks AAA.

There was a GDC speech at some point. A small indie developer, who makes like card games and puzzle games. Talked about how his revenue and living really came from the catalog he had published over the years. He only really had one game that saw success on launch but everything else was just people buying his older games after they bought the newest one. It was titled something like "how to make it as a small time indie developer." It's definitely an interesting watch. The moral of it is, just keep making games. Which I find encouraging.

Ive seen many videos on yt like this
"how much do i make as small twitch streamer"
    "How much does yt pay"
"How much monney did i make of my game"
But rarely anyone is as detailed as you and also gives a shorz insight in their lifes. I really liked how well explained this was and that you kinda sorted it from lowest income to highest.
Therefore i left a like, really all i can do atm. Trying to learn coding myself and getting my life together :)

Really appreciate the insights into this (indi game development and revenue). I was thinking of trying to get into making games more seriously and I always had a preconception that it would be more rewarding (revenue wise). At least now I can speed it down and do it as a hobby and not expect this to be a consistent revenue stream (so I'll focus more on my main area of activity).

Thanks for the candid video. Although I can't help but see similarities with the Dropshipping industry (people make fancy websites as fronts to sell cheap Chinese products at a markup). It's sold as an easy way to make money, but in reality the only ones making any are the ones who offer courses to teach people how. This seems to reflect in how your primary income is through your courses rather than games.
This isn't a criticism of you; you're clearly passionate about game development and I enjoy your videos. It more reflects the the state of the industry, and how hard it is to make a living at what many would consider a dream job.

I've recently discovered your channel from looking up Godot stuff and then really enjoying your same art kit series. I've gone through most of your backlog since then and have really enjoyed your straight forward content. And your video about not wasting someone's time had such great comedic timing! Anyways, I'd be happy to help playtest / give feedback on any games you're working on if you're in need of some dedicated helpers.

Keep it up man, you must be noticing how building this audience will help you with game sales, course sales, youtube income and possibly other sources of income in the future. Also, I am not surprised if this video will work as really effective advertising. I wouldn't call it "pity" buys because its rude and you are obviously to be pitied, so let's keep it at "philanthropic" buys. :) keep up the work man
