  • On May 18th, regional jet manufacturer ATR announced its plans for the next generation of its best-selling family of regional aircraft, the ATR "EVO," due to enter service by 2030. The next generation of aircraft will feature a new powerplant with hybrid capability and improvements in performance, economics, and sustainability. The new eco-design will include new propellers, upgraded systems, and an enhanced cabin. The aircraft will remain a two-engine turboprop that can run on 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).

I see where this is going, we're going to have an ATR vs Embraer rivalry, what with Embraer currently developing a new turboprop

I think ATR has done a good job with their orignal 42 and 72. I still prefer to fly regionally in India by these turboprops (But sometimes the Dash-8 Q400) in IndiGo and Alliance Air rather than the A320 and the 737 (Sometimes I fly in Embraer Erj-145 operated by Star Air) Love those turboprops!! Depends where you fly. But here in Europe, the routes they fly are often less than 1 hour / 500 km regional routes. Even with a normal jet plane, the time to enter a holding pattern, approach and land is where a part of the bottle neck / waiting time is, and where the turboprops are not that slower than the jets. Primarily during cruise are the jets noticeably faster.
My points is; You don't save more than 5-10 mins flying a jet compared to a turboprop on those routes.

But this is an EVO, Italian speak for evolution. This is targetted at existing ATR customers who want an updated design, but with familiar maintenance and operational procedures. The Embraer aircraft is probably an E175-E2 replacement for the US market, because the E175-E2 is no longer attractive due to its greater MTOW and airlines can no longer enjoy the benefits they had with the E1.

Maybe like a hybrid car. Like for example in non plug-in hybrid cars the electric motors are used to extend the efficiency of the engine and fuel burn. If that’s what they’re going to do with this ATR EVO, then I expect they do it for extended range or efficiency. Or it might mean that they’re just going to use the SAF not electric motors.
